NPD September 2007

Ah I see. I never was one to gamble. ;)

Thanks for the Canadian data, scooby.

hm... so Halo 3 only sold 135K in Canada? We know for sure that even 10x that number is way too little for the US.

You didn't add up all of the Halo 3s

360 HALO 3 = 135K
360 NHL 08 = 54.5K
PS2 NHL 08 = 41.7K
360 HALO 3 LEGENDARY ED = 27.2K
WII PLAY W/ REMOTE = 25K
360 HALO 3 COLLECTORS ED = 24.9K
PS3 NHL 08 = 20.8K
NDS BRAIN AGE 2: MORE TR. = 20.8K
WII METROID PRIME 3: CORR. = 16.4K
PS2 GUITAR HERO 2 W/GUITAR = 15K

 Shocking NPD numbers!

Xbox 520,000
DS 485,000
Wii 463,000
PSP 310,000
PS2 295,000
PS3 76,000

They're my predicitions...

I've read the last few posts of this thread, and all I can say is this thread is damned annoying! Everyone's posting NPD numbers with all of them just being guesses but with no-one saying so! So I'm thinking 'My, XB360 hasn't done well' and then 'Gosh, XB360 has really picked up' or 'PS3's doing better than expected' or 'PS3's struggling', and all of those thoughts are a big fat waste of time because the numbers are all made up! I've a good mind to ban the lot of you!

Hint: If the post date reads Oct 17, and not Oct 18, they're just guesses!

Some insane stuff ... I think if they keep this up, this will be a very good year for the industry. Next month we'll probably see the PS3 adding fuel to the fire, and everything will be up for the next three months just from the holiday madness alone.

Platform 8-Sep 15-Sep 22-Sep 29-Sep 6-Oct Totals

DS 109,710 111,962 120,520 143,137 135,581 620,910

GBA 17,729 17,497 19,071 21,269 21,579 97,145

Thanks

I guess these numbers included Canada as they seem kind of high. Nevertheless, the price cut and Halo provided a big boost to the 360. I think even with the presence of a PS3 sku within the $50 won't stop the 360 from at least posting similar numbers to last years holiday season. However, the 360 is primed to be a major competitor to the Wii this season, if the momentum built by the price cut and Halo proves to more than just temporary.

JFTR: It thought it was perfectly clear from the first couple of posts when the real numbers would be out, and that anything before that constitutes 'analysis' on behalf of individual posters or just 'speculation'.

I always intended (unless a mod beats me to it) to update my original post with the final numbers as well as amending the thread title with the post #number from which they were available.

OK?

As for my own predictions: I expect the X360 to beat both the DS and the Wii this month, perhaps posting numbers in excess of 500K. The PS3 will be in the vicinity of 1/3 the X360 numbers.

Hmm, I think I was the first one to suspect>500k for 360 :D

I got it from that 3X week MS statement, and reasoning from that, as my earlier post.

Also I guess 360 almost topped PS3 this week in Japan..7k versus 8k, due to release of Elite..wow. These are some type of preliminary numbers

DSL 80000
PSP 69000
Wii 24000
PS2 12000
PS3 8400
360 7100

According to IGN UK PS3 sales increased by a staggering 173% because of the new price cut on the 60GB model and the cheaper 40GB model.

If this trend is similar in more countries PS3 is bound to do compete well its other competitors. I am interested to know about these numbers

Wouldn't that be included in next month's numbers?

You're right and more this is relative to EU while NPD only tells the story about north America ;)

I've seen some numbers about europe but it's not the place to discuss them.

Yup. We have a huge 'Japan sales thread', so an Europe sales thread wouldn't be out of line. Someone feel free to start one. I'd encourage it, as many of the topics regarding sales Data from over there/here doesn't seem well founded enough for a separate thread and they're often lacking in longevity.

Wii will continue to sell all they make for now... Though in Japan, the fad seems to be about over.

Yeah you've got a point there, Wii's only selling three times as many systems as PS3 or 360 at the moment without any big new games to back it up lately... The end is nigh!

There aren't any games to play. They rode Wii Play and Wii Sports as long as they could go

Folks, this is not the Wii Japan sales thread, you know. Let's keep the discussion focused on the NPD US numbers, ok? The "It's so over for console Y" discussion will have to be postponed until the numbers are actually released. :p

Yeah I'm sure if no new games of interest to each region were released sales would start to drop eventually (though Japan sales do seem to have bottomed out at a relatively high level considering the lack of games). Its inevitable for any system. Its not something I can see effecting the US or Europe. Not with MP3 just being released and quite a few good games coming all in the next 30 days, including:

Mario Galaxy
Manhunt 2
Zak & Wiki
Battallion Wars 2
Fire Emblen:RD
Goemetry wars
Godzilla Unleashed
Tomb Raider Aniversary
Medal Of Honour: Heroes 2
Need For Speed: Pro Street
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
Rayman RR 2
Soul Calibur Legends

Not all AAA but plenty to keep people interested in November.

Some of these games are old, some are multiplatform, some are ok and others uncertain how good they will be. Mario Galaxy and Zak & Wiki stand out though but probably thats it.

I am still waiting for big titles to come on it (with a couple exceptions). I dont feel that these titles are the ones that sell Wii's by the bucket loads.

Btw, AMD just announced they had a nice improvement in royalties (read Hollywood and Xenos) in 3Q, and their financial quarters match calendar quarters. So. . . if it was enuf of an up for them to specifically point at. . . talk amongst yourselves.

Edit: For a little more color, they claim a quarterly improvement in CE of $12M, attributible to handhelds and royalties. So lets make two assumptions. Ass-u-me #1 --$5 royalty/chip both Hollywood and Xenos. Ass-u-me #2 --you have to contribute at least 20% of the improvment to get called out specifically.

This gives us, for the quarter, a lower bounds of 480,000 marginal increase in Hollywood/Xenos chips for which royalties were received, and a upper bounds of 1,920,000 marginal increase of Hollywood/Xenos chips for which royalties were received.

But then you have to figure in when they get to "count", which I think might be when MS sells the unit to a retailer for XB. . .not sure about Wii.

EditII: Arrrgh! Bugger! Qualcomm! They did a licensing deal with Qualcomm this quarter and that might throw a monkey into yon wrench above. There may have been some unknown amount of upfront licensing fee that got counted in this bucket.
