NPD March 2008

Winners by what criteria? note to self: that doesn't even make sense

Success of some sort? Money?
They may all be successful by some criteria, but there is going to be only one winner.
And look at how you describe GC as weakest link, despite making more money than Xbox.
Add to the fact that if growth is a criteria, Xbox was "most winner" of all.
So everyone was winner last gen?
I'm clearly playing with words, since that's what is done in "everyone's a winner" posts.

Forgive my honesty but this tune doesn't sound much different from "my favorite console is not winning, but it wants to capture living room anyway" threads.

To a certain extent everyone WAS a winner last generation or they wouldn't still be in the business.

Yes impressive, and in regard to recent discussion about controller, it's clearer and clear than nun-chuck is here to stay, it's a plebiscite from costumers.

It's like the pad I fell like competitors will have to adopt it sooner or later.

I disagree. The Wii controller is good for Wii games, but not for all games. I prefer the X360 pad for traditional gaming.

[360 Lost Odyssey] = 65K

That makes about 270,000 for Lost Odyssey in the US, that's fairly respectable. Good to see some JRPG support for a non-FF RPG on 360.

Add another 60k in Japanese sales, and whatever it's sold in the rest of the world, it could look to break 500k. Hopefully we see a sequal!

I think we will have a hybrid system, where the nunchunk style is combined with the same number of buttons we have been accustomed to for the last few years.

I can see a traditional style controller that splits into two parts where the traditional layout on the right side is used in reverse. Where the X, square, triangle and O button on the PS controller are placed to the left of the second analog stick instead of the right of it.

Whoops.

For anyone else's information, it's 3.9M on 360 according to the tallied NPD results. Add in the Canadian sales, and it should be well over 4M.

Isn't the variety pack available worldwide? Shouldn't we be looking at the number of COD4 copies sold worldwide?

I am amazed at the 360's reslience against the PS3 in the US. With only a $50 advantage against a competitor thats also serves a BluRay player you think the PS3 would have a distinct advantage with such a small price gap.

This spring is a pivotal time for both consoles. If MS continues on with its conservative price cutting strategy, Sony will likely follow suit but Nintendo will end up the a big Ipod slice of the console market. If MS cuts prices, Sony will likely follow suit unless they lost all their flexibility for the first half of the year by releasing the $400 sku back in November.

blah, one silly joke and now everyone is nit picking. :p

Should it be a surprise ? I don't believe the price is anywhere near mass market acceptance as a Blu Ray player.

Not really. Maybe it's different here in Canada, but when I walk into EB, the game section for the 360 is larger, has more exclusive titles and a hell of a lot more used games. If you don't have an interest in a BluRay player, or you want a bigger selection of games, you'll probably want to save yourself the $50. Hell, that $50 almost pays for your first game.

Everyone assumes every person who owns a 360 has an HDTV, but I don't think that's the case. I know plenty of people who use them with SDTV and would have no need or interest in BluRay. I'd be interested in seeing a poll that details what percentage of 360 and PS3 users have an HDTV. I'd be willing to bet HDTV uptake is pretty high on both, but the PS3 higher than the 360.

Heh, I am surprised this is being posted - not just by you, Patsu, but in general - as if this is something surprisingly new. This has been happening every month since the Wii launched. As I've posted in the last few NPD threads, next gen has been won by Nintendo. Sony and MS are duking it out for second place, but it's moot (as a wise man once said!).

Where did I say I was surprised by Wii's position ? :) My attention is more on the 360 and PS3. They will likely (re)introduce something to make them more relevant to the masses this holiday season (Not just a price drop).

360 and PS3 bundles that include the Nintendo Wii? ;)

They don't need to do that. Price cuts, the continuing and increasing thirst for HD content (gaming and BR) and the fact that many established franchises are coming for these two systems means that MS and Sony are nowhere near shaking in their boots.

As I've stated before: Millions of gamers (10's of million actually) aren't going to pass up on GT, FF, MGS, GTA, SC, etc... just to restrict themselves to playing Smash Brothers and Mario Kart with terrible graphics. Especially when price drops happen, and they always do.

first point a standart controler comes with wi so ti's clear that not all game are a good match.

But could you define wii games?

This controler looks intersting for a lot of games in my opinion.
May be it could be iproved (accuracy, etc.) but still potentially better than pad for fpd tps action, games, some sport games.
And I don't speak of motion sensing (can be cool) I'm speaking of the wiimote as a pointing device.

Yeah, thats true for standalone but we are talking a feature on a gaming console that by itself will rival the console market in terms of revenue generated in the future.

Furthermore, neither the PS3 and 360 as gaming console have reached mass market prices so the fact the PS3 serves as a competent BluRay player would make the notion that such a small price gap would allow the PS3 to outsale the 360 to the highend crowd highly plausible. However, thats not the reality in the US.
