NPD June 2010

What's somewhat interesting is that RDR has the potential to do as well on PS3 as GoW 3 did. That's completely excluding X360 numbers which already beat it in the first 2 months.

A year or two ago, who'd have thought a Western would do better than a GoW title?

Can you give us the sales of both games?. Thanks.

Well, if we're talking strictly NPD, GoW3 did 1.1M + .18M in March & April, respectively. RDR has already shown ~2.5M sales across both platforms in the US. ~950K for just PS3 numbers so far.

Where are PS2 sales numbers? they are still making and selling consoles...

I think this top 10 is overrated, it should be at least top 40 to get a better idea of genre sales.

They last released the PS2 numbers in February of this year.

NPD does track them, they just don't release those numbers to the public.

Well the Sony PS3 numbers represent them solving their stocking problems so who knows?

The ps3 was widely avalible in June. Even news reports on the web said sony fixed the avalibilty in May.

The 360 however came out at the end of june and aside from one shipment in june for gamestop it was out of stock there the whole month. July has only had 2 360 s shipments so far I believe. So it may be another month limited by shortages but they may still ship many more this month than last month

Toy Story 3: The Video Game for Nintendo DS at No. 6 with more than 164,000 sold, Wii Fit™ Plus with the Wii Balance Board accessory at No. 7 with more than 148,000 sold and LEGO® Harry Potter™: Years 1-4 for Wii at No. 9 with more than 136,000 sold.
found this

eg heres march 2010
* God of War III
* Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver
* Final Fantasy XIII
* Metro 2033
* Just Cause 2
* Battlefield: Bad Company 2
* Yakuza 3
* MLB 10: The Show

surely a better idea would be to release a couple of those in june!

Ill join in :D

That was definitely a crowded month. Spring 2011 looks to be another crowded period also, except now one of the gaming juggernauts (Gears 3) is being positioned in Spring as well as KZ3. It'll be interesting to see the fallout from that. I'm anticipating a lot of cannibalization of sales on each respective platform.

Grin on the sign off.

I know it's not NPD, but does anyone know how well RDR did outside the US? Makes me wonder if 'Western' as a genre has more or less resonance with US audiences.

That's an interesting thought. Although on the flip side, when Westerns (movies not games) were still popular in the 60's and 70's many of them were made by Italians in Italy. :D I'm not sure if that meant westerns were also popular in Europe or just Italy.

Does Spain still have a lot of ranches?

The PS3 shortages in previous months hurt the hardware sales for sure. I don´t know to what extent, but in any case Sony wasn´t too smart releasing a title like God of War without enough hardware supplies.

XTS numbers are on top of the hill, but I expected a bit more, because of the stock clearance of older models (if I am not wrong, the price point was 150 for Arcade and 250 for Elite, a good offer I think).

In some places the fall in the software tie ratio for XBOX 360 during the month has been related with repurchasing and replacing of old units. Slim seems a good choice for sure, in terms of reliability and equipment (the WiFi is something of a commodity today).

Two question arise now:
- Would be the sales of XTS so high during the next months?
- If that´s the case, is Sony prone to make a discount, or lowering the price to the 250 point?

Greetings,
DD

Top 20

But it's the 4th best selling game of the month on the 360, which isn't really a strong leg but more like a column... They've really struck gold with this one. Seems like it's almost a system seller...
Although it also has to be mentioned that it was a relatively small month for software, with the #3 Transformers game selling 132k units.

Oh and Activision was an idiot to wreck Infinity Ward, but that's not new either.

You often see MW2 in various Europe country charts all the time too.

Funny how we usually end up getting about the whole top ten software sales, or at least 10 of the top 20, eventually anyway. Of course maybe we used to get the top ten +~5 assorted more, I dont remember.

The 360 SKU breakdown is pretty interesting. I'd have guessed more like 80% slims.

not surprising if you checked amazons rankings at the time, the arcade was only a few places lower than the slim (the 50$ pricecut pushed some fencesitters to buy it). OTOH july will be a lot different though, arcade is now way way lower than the slim.
