NPD July 2007

...
The fact of the matter is that 2K8 FORCES you to try and play real football, instead of just rolling McNabb out of the pocket launching a 70 yard bomb down the field. The mix of the legend players with regular players is superb, and you can virtually have a different game each time as you can randomly generate teams each game, which is ingenious! The kicking game is fantastic, and after having played both on 360, I can't even fathom that anyone would buy Madden. Pro license or not. It's about the game play and 2k8 matches that much closer to real NFL action!

totally agree!

also, up close the graphics (sans field textures and day lighting) are superior to Madden's in every way.

and only reinforcing to me, in that question, the strength of the PlayStation/Madden bond in many gamers' eyes. A lot of PS2 "Madden Gamers" (i.e. the ones who are really active and filter information to the community) held out for a couple years to see how the PS3 version would turn out.

I don't think this has anything to do with the PS3. As I said in an early message about Madden, this is the first year that the PS2 users are firmly disappointed in the offering. For the first time, they are realizing they cannot get their Madden fix without purchasing a new console.

These are people who play few other games than Madden. You can classify them almost as Nintendo fans who only play Mario and Zelda.

The reason they haven't jumped ship before now and stayed with their inferior PS2 graphics is because they heard from far and wide that the 360 version wasn't as good as the Xbox or PS2 versions.

EA gimped those games, particularly the franchise mode, which is what most of these Madden players care the most about. They're stats guys and simulate games as much or more than they actually play them.

This year, the PS3 version is having problems from everything that I've read while the 360 version finally polished and provides the best Madden experience ever. Combine that with the advertising.

If anything, it hurts MS that EA failed so miserably with the first two versions on the 360. Those versions were worse than their PS2 and Xbox counterparts.

But this year, the 360 version is supposedly bulletproof and the PS2 version is supposedly a huge disappointment. Those PS2 people are going to be playing the game this year at their buddy's house.. on the 360.

August, I expect the 360 to do well due to Madden and Bioshock. However, it'll be interesting to see how well the PS3 holds up with a bunch of new exclusives out (late august/early sept) in Warhawk, Lair and HS.

The software to hardware increase ratio should give us an idea if any of the exclusvies were big system sellers or just bought up by the exiting customer base.

i think those games will have more of an impact on September sales. don't forget Madden was also released on PS3. ;)
even though the PS3 version was mediocre, i think it will boost PS3 sales a bit too, but not as much as the 360.

Actually I doubt it. Given the fact that the cost of the PS3 is more than the 360 and its ratings of Madden were lower than the 360, I doubt it will be a system mover. Had the PS3 cost less and/or the PS3 version be a lot better then yea....

Over here, a lot of people are buying a PS3 when / for Pro Evo Soccer 6 or FIFA 08. I guess that's comparable with Madden. But they want a Playstation, and given that they want a Playstation, they also want to play FIFA on it. Not all of them are thinking 'I want the best version of FIFA, so what console should I buy for that.' There are all sorts of different considerations going on, like:

- I want to buy the latest version of FIFA/PES6/Madden/NFL etc, but I also want to be able to keep playing my PS2 games
- I want to buy the latest version of FIFA/PES6/Madden/NFL etc, but I also want to play BluRay

etc. I'm not trying to rerun the whole console war here, so don't discuss the validity of these arguments. Rather compare it to how in Europe a lot of people buy a new TV set around when the four-yearly Worldcup starts. They were going to buy a new tv anyway, but the WorldCup / Christmas / whatever is a good time for it. Similarly, a new release of your favorite game that is somehow better on the next gen consoles is a good time to get the next console.

For what it's worth, and this is not a value judgment of the 360 at all, just an observation of how this works, the only guy I know in Europe who has a 360 at this moment is selling it and buying a PS3 during September because he wants to play FIFA08 and PES6 on the PS3. Don't ask me why, that's just the way it is. Among my (25) colleagues there are (much to my surprise) 4 PS3 owners now, with number five coming soon.

Interesting.

Here in norway, amongst my friends (i have no geeky friends, some casual gamers) all of them have the following thoughts:

1. Playstation 3 is waaaaaaaaaay more powerful than the X360
2. The Playstation 3 is waaaaaaaaaaaaay to expensive

I know 4 people that has a PS3. Most my casual gaming friends are either owning a X360 or considering to buy one. The main argument is price, which i find funny, seing how Norway have way higher incomes (average income is $70 000 a year\per person) than any other Sony stronghold.

Yet, PS3 sales seems to be going pretty good. I wonder what demographic is buying them.

i know VGChartz is a joke, but they had Madden 08 for PS3 in the top 10 for software sales for a few weeks i believe. it still sold decently despite reviews. i didn't say it would be a huge system seller, but it will definitely help sales a bit. football is huge in the states...

Look at the numberst though. 1mil vs. 250k. NPD will tell the tale ultimately.

250k in a couple weeks for a system with a user base of ~2m (in the US) is not bad and it was the top selling PS3 game at the time, so i think it will help PS3 sales, at least a little. the 360's userbase in the US is also 3.6x the PS3's.

The install base arugment becomes silly after a while. Look at the PS2 install base in the US vs. the units sold on the 360. Going back to Madden 2007, it should be noted that Madden 07 sold 1.7 million copies on the 360. It'll be interseting to see how well 2008 sells on the PS3 during the year.

Seeing that this game will only sell in NA, these are not high numbers and it's not much of a system seller that I can see. And this is without any competition from other strong software titles on the PS3 where as Madden is actually competing with Bioshock.

For the record, I picked Bioshock over Madden and might have lost 2 friend due to it :(

i don't think its fair to compare PS2 install base to 360 install base, because although the PS2 has a large install base, many of those people have moved onto the PS3, Wii or 360.

and like i said all along, it's not like i think it will boost PS3 sales dramatically, but i think it will help, at least a bit. surely you don't think Madden 08's release on PS3 won't help sales AT ALL? if not, then i guess we disagree and well see.

Relative to the 360, madden will not help the ps3. While it may help increase overall system sales madden is going to put the ps3 further behind the 360.

It's silly for me to make the comments that even 1 PS3 won't be sold due to Madden 08. The PS3 is going to sell X amount of units. How many of those will be due to madden? I have no clue. But you can extrapolate somewhat by a bump in volume if any. We'll see though.

Oh and I dont' disagree or agree. Until I see the NPD figures, I have no clue! just speculating :)

yeah, but i heard playing soccer (or football) games on the 360 controller sucks.

No it doesn't.

Most people i know (we are Fifa\Pes fanatics) say its wierd in the beginning because your used to using the d-pad on the PS2 controller, (your also not used to 360 degree free range of motion that you get in Fifa 07).

Haven't really heard many complain, the control scheme in Fifa 07 does take a little while to get used to, but after one learns to handle it (give it 2-3 matches), its a lot better than the previous ones.

Doh! You should have know as Madden has always been a social game. I love to invite friends over to play som Madden. Given the ammount of trashing talking we do its amazing we even get through one game of it :) I guess what I am saying is you could have secertly played Bioshock with them not knowing about it... :)
