NPD July 2007

Sells like hotcakes but I dont see the games reflecting the necessary quality that explains the sales to me.

E3 which was the place I was expecting to show dedication by developers finally on the console wasnt that big. The game announcements arent spectacular enough and the amount of awesome games released on it arent as many either.

I am as irrelevant as anyone else including you.

I've seen people buy one just for Wii Sports, only to say they will probably never buy another game. Something to have when their friends come over, like Spades or something. Wii is beyond the normal realm of things.

If that's true, then it doesn't really bode well for 3rd party software. The only one making money off the Wii will be Nintendo. They'll have the hardware sales crown, but no other dev will touch it. So, from that perspective, is the Wii even relevant? (I'm just asking. I don't want to start a console war).

Luckily for Nintendo, though, that customer is still a $50 win. The same customer for MS or Sony would be money thrown out the window. And with the Wii currently approaching 11 million sold with no signs of it slowing down anytime soon, even if most Wii purchasers were like that they'd still have a healthy installed base to maintain software profitability for both their own titles and third parties.

Well yep thats why my initial post. It is surprising how Wii has managed a totally different kind of "appeal" never seen before. It sells and gains market share differently than any other console in history

If that's true, then what's the point? The only one making money off the Wii will be Nintendo. They'll have the hardware sales crown, but no other dev will touch it. So, from that perspective, is the Wii even relevant? (I'm just asking. I don't want to start a console war).

Its going to murder everyone in hardware sales while next to no one puts games on it, outside of the Japanese. 360 game sales are mainly the other thing keeping people from jumping 100%. We'll see what the 360 price drop does next month for Microsoft.

But is it true for everyone? I know people who bought a PS2 simply for Madden. I know people who say they're only going to get a Xbox 360 for Halo 3 once its out. What people say and what happens is different.

Two games for the Wii are in the top 10 best sellers, while not great its not to bad. I think the major issue is that game publishers and developers still have not caught on to the audience the Wii has. It has many non tradiontial gamers and then it also has a lot of "jaded gamers" who want something different from it. I can show you hardcore gamers who have a Wii and consider it the best thing since sliced bread. Time will tell though, not "I know someone..." stories.

Whoa, amazing Wii numbers for a July.

And that Morgan Stanley analyst Pachter really lowballed the 360. He had predicted 115k. With all the negative press on the red ring issue, and a looming price-cut, the 360 did ok.

Even after a $100 price cut, the PS3 is still barely beating (about 4k more) the lowest ever month for the 360. Sony need to cut another $100 from the PS3. Even then, that pond for the $400 console has been fished by MS for over a year. It will be a little low on fish when Sony gets there.

Well if in august PS3 is still at 40 k a Week and 360 up to 80 k a week, Wii sales should fall no ?
Thats not a given. Looking at the reports and trends from these sales figures I think the overriding take out, so far, is "Holy crap! The game entertainment business is growing fast!". Possibly if/when competeting console SKU's start encoraching each other closer in price you may see one console impacting another, but then Wii's price could potentially be viewed as being slightly artificially high due to the massive demands on it; if demand drops they have room to move it down in price to keep it high.

PS3 did as expected, but 360 numbers being still good (enough) makes me wonder if 360 price-cut was premature even if sales double this month.

Wii, on the other hand, needs a $100 price cut.:devilish:

Interesting numbers. They're so far behind now I'm not sure exactly what this time window covered. Was this a full month of ps3 sales with the price cut? How many total weeks does this npd cover?

I'm convinced the people still buying so many ps2's are replacing their old ones. When will it die!?
Ps3 did well to get well above 100k. xb360 seems to be running out of steam. Wii is still doing it's market dominance thing.

Asking game retailers around here, consensus is the ps3 was flying off the shelf right after the price drop. The following few weeks saw a steady decrease to slightly higher than pre-pricedrop levels.
xb360 sales don't seem to be as brisk as ps3 was immediately after their price drop, but they are more consistant. Sales ratio was 2-4 to 1 currently depending on gameshop location. (xb360 to ps3)

Curiously when asked about the hd-dvd addon, the sales are horrible. The worst one saying they've only sold 1 this year

I'm predicting for August:
400k for Wii
225k for xb360
125k for ps3

Though the Bioshock/Madden hype may push sales a bit higher for both but I'd say I'm confident +/- 25k/console

Anyone have lifetime to date for US NPD on all three consoles?

I agree. I have a Wii since launch and especially given how fast the console sells the amount of quality 3rd party games announced is just pathetic. The last 3 or 4 months of the year will see some quality nintendo titels and some quality 3rd party titels so I hope they sell really well and devs see its worth it to invest in quality wii games.

August is the month for the 360 drop, not July. Even then, Microsoft increased 7% from last month.
