NPD August 2009

360 roughly twice PS3 which was roughly twice PC. The game was made for the consoles from day one but still, seeing these numbers for such a venerable PC franchise makes me cringe.

Id cant be happy with this..

Once again we see 360 relatively stronger in an FPS though. About 2-1 ratio, whereas Arkham Asylum was almost 1:1.

It seems non-FPS tend to skew toward PS3 while FPS tend to skew 360. I think this is down to controller as much as anything. 360 controller is really built for FPS.

I would bet money that it won't outsell Halo 3, especially since there was a H3 bundle. I also don't think it will push much hardware either. If people were waiting for a Halo game to purchase a 360, it would have been Halo 3, the first Halo released on the platform. If we see a bump in sales next month (which we most likely will) it will be because of the price drops if anything. Of course it will sell a shit load of copies, and I do think it will move some hardware, but I don't think it will move that many. My opinion of course.

I think the Halo3 bundle didn't include Halo3. ;)
(and also looked atrocious)

Nope.

And yeah that was such a horrible SKU..$50 extra for a nasty green color.

It was actually more than that. You got a HDMI port when the Core & Pro didn't have one at the time. You also got a Play & Charge Kit & some exclusive GamerPics & Themes. And it was $50 less than the Elite too. But yeah, very disappointing it didn't have the game.

August vs July:

PlayStation 3 + 73%
PSP +15%
Wii + 10%
Xbox 360 + 6%
Nintendo DS + 3%
PlayStation 2 - 2%

And some YTDs:
Code:
Jan~Aug NPD
---- 2008 2009 diff
360 1741k 2039k +17%
PS3 2019k 1452k -28%
Wii 4491k 3554k -21%
The other three:
Code:
Jan~Aug NPD
---- 2008 2009 diff
PS2 1577k 1000k -37%
PSP 1958k 1182k -40%
NDS 4313k 5194k +20%

That the PS2 is on its way out is no surprise, but the PSP's decline is pretty shocking. I don't see how the PSP Go could fix that.

I France there will be a bundle including Halo 3 and ODST selling @279euros.

PSP is being eclipsed by the new generation of multifunction mobile devices. I'm not shocked at all! ;)

You could say the same about the NDS however, but that is still showing quite a bit of growth.

But then NDS was always a little more gamecentric than the PSP which aspired to be a handheld media/game experience. Still love my launch PSP though. Still a nice way to watch games and play movies on long flights.

Yeah, it's the comparison with the DS that tells me technical eclipsification isn't the problem here ;)
It's such a great device all around. It's massively underappreciated IMO.

Launch day too here. And I'm not lying when I say that I'm using my PSP (well, I have two, both 1ks though, one black Japanese launch unit and one White from a EU Daxter pack) every single day. Lately it's been more podcasts and Bambi c.s. for my kid, who at 16 months is very capable of holding the PSP by himself, it's a perfect fit. But very soon there'll be a lot of gaming again, with GT PSP probably taking the prime spot there.

Yeah I'm actually waiting to see grandmasters analysis of GT PSP. If it's as good as he says it is, I'm probably going to pick it up. Even though I hardly have time to get in any gaming recently. /sigh.

That's a funny study.

Everyone always thinks they are immune to marketing. They may as well asked the question: "Do you believe that you don't have a mind of your own and are programmed by advertisers?" LOL.

Believe me, the marketing works. If anything it gets the hardcore buying games and then the casuals hear about the games from the hardcore players.

Yup. Sounds like cobblers to me. A well orchestrated advertising campaign does wonders for sales. I doubt whether Assassins Creed would have sold half as much (in the UK) if it weren't for the blanket TV campaign they had last December.

Actually I thank that this part was more relevant to the thread
Console Cross-Ownership

In a section of the report measuring gamer ownership of multiple consoles, NPD found Wii owners to be the least likely to own another gaming system, not surprising given the system's comparatively high market share. Just over a quarter of Wii owners in the U.S. own an Xbox 360, and only 14 percent of them own a PlayStation 3.

Contrasting that figure, owners of the PlayStation 3 -- the least-common of the three consoles in the United States -- are the most likely to own another console. Slightly more than a third of them own an Xbox 360, while only 18 percent of Xbox 360 owners have a PlayStation 3.

But Wii ownership proves more ubiquitous -- 42 percent of both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners have one.

And Wii player habits turn out to be much in line with how they are frequently anecdotally reported: more than half of Wii owners say their most-played online games fall under the "card/puzzle/arcade/word" umbrella, while their favored offline genre is "family-oriented games." On the other hand, shooters are the most popular online genre on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with racing and action/adventure tied for preferred PS3 offline genre.

But there's something of a surprise on the Xbox 360, demonstrating Microsoft's all-ages push might be working: along with action/adventure games, Xbox 360's most popular offline genre is family-oriented gaming.
A lot of people were wanting that kind of numbers.

Huh, so can someone with more affinity to math calculate the actual total number of next-gen console owners in the US? :)

Based on the above information, that's impossible. You need to add at least one external number that specifies an absolute value for one of the parameters (number of 360 owners, Wii owners or PS3 owners for instance)
