No Man's Sky [PS4, PS5, XO, XBSX|S, PC, NX, XGP]

Yeah, this really appeals to the explorer in me.
That latest trailer is great because they're showing creatures that look a lot different to anything we'd consider "normal".

The technology just looks amazing too, I really hope there can be both an underlying purpose (more than just "get to the centre") and a completely open ended design. I hope I don't feel compelled to just get to the centre.

Yeah, I look forward to finding more alien creatures. Interesting that during the 30 min interview posted above they said they made a conscious decision to only previously show Earth-like lifeforms but that's a lot of weird stuff out there.

I genuinely hope there's some terrifying stuff in there :)

But I didn't understand when he talked about voxels: is this a voxel based engine?
Just going from what the guy said (which is all we've got at this point), it would seem the procedural generator draws the world as voxels, which are then polygonized for rendering to the screen. So the voxel stuff is just an underpinning really.

Incidentally, back in the early 80s, there were Rescue on Fractalus, The Eidolon and Koronis Rift; these games featured "voxel-ish" pseudo-random terrain for Atari XL and C64. Obviously orders of magnitude simpler than No Man's Sky, and I don't know if anyone from Hello Games have played these old clunkers, but the heritage is still there, I would say...

I'm probably reading too much into it, but the guy does say that "generally I'm very close to the screen when I'm playing" and he puts his hand right next to his eyes. It's at about 26.10 in the video.

I actually find the LOD pretty offputting when flying around the planet, although I suppose on foot it'll be a non-issue.

Me too but he did say he was using the dev camera so could outpace world generation whereas the player can't. They have certainly shown players flying ships in atmosphere though, so I guess they fly slower. Other previews also haven't shown anywhere near as much pop-in as when he used the dev camera. Plus the 'fog' on the rocky planet looks like it might be specific to certain planets, it doesn't exist on other planets they've shown.

Plus, of course, it's not finished ;)

He said at one point that you can see the curvature of the planet when standing on a mountaintop, so fog obviously can't be as high on all planets (or it'd have to be the most ridiculously small planet ever, heh. :))

They could also reduce LOD when flying just to reduce pop-in. That'd be the preferred option for me.

From what I could tell watching the video, that's what they seem to be doing. Extra ground detail and foliage would smoothly fade in when he slowed down, even when not using the uber fast developer turbomode type flight.

did they deleted the ability to name the planed however you want? or for simplicity sake, they did not enable it for trailers?

The best thign ever, sriously. Evne if it ends up being just an exploration game, I am ready to delete every other game and just explore the universe !

and the dev, he is such a gamer ! Love to see a "no PR" takl from a dev. It feels so "human" as if one is conversing , not watching a movie.

I remember them stating the server-based 'master' universe records which player discovers plants and species but don't recall them saying anything about players naming anything. That sounds like a recipe for ongoing monitoring to prevent abuse!

I'd say it sounds like a recipe for keeping track of who discovers what actually... :)

Anyway, if you could name things in this game you just know there would be a thousand (or ten thousand) guys who would name all their plants "dickbloom" and variations thereof, and all their animals "dickeater" and variations thereof. Besides, naming stuff would probably get tedious after a while in a game that is all about discovery in a galaxy spanning millions of worlds made by random/procedural generation.

Apparently the goal is to reach the center of the universe to solve the secret mystery. For this you explore, gather resources on planets, upgrade your ship, suit, fight enemies (which get stronger and stronger the more you gather resources from a single planet, send by a mysterious robot watcher)...and finally reach the center...or just keep on exploring without bothering about the center at all and discover planets [emoji4]

I want this!

You've mis-read my post. Letting people name things is an opportunity for abuse. That's likely why they are just recording who discovers what.

That sounds awesome ! When did they reveal that ? :D

Don't think this gameplay has been linked yet

The pop-in while flying is very apparent. This game will be much better on PC with a honking great CPU driving the procedural creation!
