Nintendo Switches up production

Does this opinion of yours include the lack of cameras and microphones (sold for pennies BTW), essentially killing all possibilities of multiplayer voice chat and augmented reality games like Pokemon Go?

I did say "just about everything right." I agree there are blemishes. The mobile app that was supposed to be Nintendo's answer to proper voice chat has flopped in a big way. The old saying "its better than nothing" actually doesn't ring true here. It is so bad that nobody I know uses the app, and have instead been using Discord. There are certainly things that I would personally change, but ultimately the statement regarding Nintendo doing "just about everything right" is directly linked to how it is received in the market. Switch is doing well, and if it continue to do well, then its hard to give our personal grievances too much weight.

I see some people speculating that Nintendo must big have games coming next year that we don't know about/aren't confirmed for 2018 release yet. I guess that's possible. But another thing is is that Nintendo's paid online service is coming next year. It's possible that Nintendo may starting viewing console business more like Sony and especially Microsoft where the subscription service is a significant part of the revenue/business model. Maybe part of the plan for Nintendo is a price cut on hardware next year in order shift a lot of units in hopes to drive the number of potential subscribers.

Edit: Also consider that the price in Japan is already the equivalent of ~$265. Which makes the idea of going to $250 in the US and subsequent markets less of crazy idea. Perhaps next summer/fall?

Almost certainly. This years games big Nintendo games were aimed at gamers - Zelda, Splatoon and Mario. Next year you'll almost certainly get Animal Cross, possibly another bloody Pikmin game. Metroid? Hmmm.. probably 2019.

Yeah, Nintendo has been extremely smart with their 1st party releases. Instead of clustering them mostly at launch as some would expect, they've spread them out over a long period of time. That has guaranteed that the Switch remains in the public eye the entire time.

Then we have an unexpectedly good performing 3rd party new IP which certainly has helped tremendously.

And then, they've done well with getting 3rd party indie titles on the platform (as I've mentioned before this is the main reason many of the people I know even own a Switch right now). This one I think doesn't get nearly as much notice as it deserves. For many years now people have been wishing they could play a lot of Indie PC titles on the go. Many people were very hopeful that the PS Vita would become that device, but Sony hugely disappointed a lot of people when that didn't materialize. The Switch has basically been the portable gaming device these people have been dreaming about for years now. I'm one of them. :p

There was always a chance that the slim launch lineup might have gone wrong, but having Zelda as the launch lynchpin pretty much guaranteed that it would sell out. And then just a steady procession of hit software release followed by hit software release meant it's never really left the public consciousness.

Good job Nintendo after the whole Wii-U fiasco.

Regards,
SB

Vita was the platform for indie games on the go. Now it's Switch because it's also a breeze to play those same games on your TV. No CrossBuy, no CrossPlay, just Switch. The lack standard TV out on Vita and ability to use a DualShock controller from day 1 was perplexing.

Vita was ahead of its time. Mobile tech wasn't quite up to the task of HD gaming at that point, but more importantly Sony didn't devote nearly enough resources to software development on the platform. Nintendo focusing its efforts onto Switch the key reason it has been successful. The device without all the first party games would not have sold nearly as well.

How awesome is it for Nvidia and the Tegra X1. It was a big deal when they revealed the processor back in 2015, but over time it seemed as though the processor was destined to obscurity. Then comes along Nintendo with a device that could accommodate active cooling and a battery with enough capacity to leverage the chips capabilities. The partnership has been highly beneficial for both companies.

Japan still has nothing.

I finally managed to order one through the online Nintendo store because they had a new batch for sale today. Had to refresh for an hour but finally got through after adding some more games...

Switch
Classic controller
Carry case
Mariokart
Mario

Damage? 54.000 Yen or a little over 400 euros.

When will it arrive? First week of December. Maybe that will give me some intensive to finish Batman Arkham Knight before I get my Switch.

Man I can only dream of prices like that... In Finland You'll be paying 400€ just for the console and Mario Odyssey code, toss in that other stuff and you are way past 500€ and still need to add an SD card and realistically Zelda :) Just yesterday I was holding the unit in my hand at a store, but that price is just crazy. You can get a PS4 or Xbox One with a new game and no need to expand storage for 200-220€, so that portability really comes with a premium...

Used market is pretty dry as well. I could save some money ordering it from Germany, but after VAT differences, it wouldn't help me too much.

Just like in Indonesia.

And it's also keeps going out of stock

I am proud of how I fought, even if at the end I ran like a b to a nearby supermarket at 4am to snag myself the unit + copy of Mario. :) Turned out to be an expensive night as I also ordered a Lenovo Yoga 910 (i5 7200u, 8GB, 256SSD, 1080p)... Pretty good deal though at 749€, even if it's those outgoing 2 core models. Getting my travel gear ready! Still need Zelda, Mariokart 8 and an extra controller. I see there is a Hori controller for 30€ which seems to be getting decent reviews... has a cord though.

Well this is my first Nintendo system since the Gamecube...

Is this the de facto Switch thread for people getting and playing the Switch?

Looking at picking up a Switch but seeing if the SMO bundle is worth it.

Is a carrying case or screen protector necessary?

Seems like the Super Mario Odyssey bundle ($380 plus sales tax) isn't that great a deal vs. buying the console and the physical game separately for $300 and $60. It's $20 more for the bundle and the only thing you'd get is some red carrying case.

I'd use it mostly in portable mode so a case could be useful but does the screen scratch easily?

The only BF sale for Switch-related products are a couple of games on sale. The ones I saw was FIFA 18 for $30 and Monopoly from Ubisoft for $20 from Best Buy. Neither of these games seem to be particularly well-received. But for these prices, I'll probably get them, hope that there are a lot of people playing these games online.

btw i like playing on nintendo console but i really dislike nintendo games, all of this are boring and a waste of money for me

* super mario series (except the 3D spherical space jumping thing on Wii)
* Zelda series (got hooked by Skyward Sword for a bit, but then quickly got bored by the super slow pace and annoying handholding)
* Pokemon series (i dont understand wheres the good of this game at all)
* etc

but i like so many 3rd party games that are nintendo exclusives

* Prof. Layton series (fun, engaging, good in quick play, nice music)
* Ace attorney (fun, engaging, good in quick play, nice music)
* Hotel 212
* Xenoblade
* etc

looking at Switch... it seems these kind of games are still not available... Yes the 3rd party support looks strong enough, even bethesda and rockstar are coming. But those are not nintendo exclusive.

Zelda Breath of the Wild isn't 100% my cup of tea but one thing you can't accuse it of is hand-holding. You are expected to learn the game's mechanics and discover everything yourself.

Also if you want the physical copy of Super Mario Odyssey then don't buy the bundle(unless you are in Australia).

Well, we also opened the box a bit early last night. I had very, very little idea of what the Switch was - apart being able to be a portable and also plug it to the TV. And. I'm absolutely gobsmacked at how good it is. I watched my partner play Mario last night and i just couldn't believe how pretty it was!
Such a good surprise. Everything about it just feels magical. And it's the first Nintendo thing I've owned since the NES and the original Gameboy!
Insane. Boyfriend is very pleased. And I can't wait to see Zelda on it - it's still in the box, and apparently it's very impressive.
Really not surprised it's having all this success.

And there are TONS to discover. I finished it (by accident) and there was just so much I never got around to! People are different, but - don’t spoil the joy of discovering by reading/watching stuff on the net. Just do it by yourself(ves). It’s a joy! :)

Glad you are enjoying it. I have had my Switch since launch day, and it is quickly becoming my favorite console ever. I take it with me nearly every day to work, and on my lunch break I chill in my truck while listening to the radio and playing Switch. This year has been an insane year for software. Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart and Splatoon all in the same year, and each one is glorious.

Yeah, when playing Mario, at no point did I think it needs to look better or different. The game has a very nice visual look. It does drop frames in some occasions, but it doesn't happen too often or lasts long and it didn't really bother either. I can highly recommend the Pro controller for docked gameplay even if the standard setup works pretty good as well. The controller is very good and it saves the hassle of removing and attaching the joy-cons if you alternate between docked and handheld a lot.

I was happy to find that my pre-existing powerbank is able to increase the battery level of the Switch while playing, should make a 10h flight a breeze :)
