The whole interview is cringe-worthy.
"Gandalf of the consoles because it comes at the right time"? Yeah as if Nintendo wouldn't have given an arm and a leg to have this released during 2015's holiday season.
"We're an entertainment company, not a game or graphics company", funny how everything they do is either games or games consoles.

The UI looks boring. I think someone coded up a Java interface like you find on multi-function copiers and applied no styling or color to it. I expected something with more pizzazz, more fun from Nintendo.

I just figured it would have more of a colorful fun interaction considering the target audience for the device.

Unlike DS, 2DS and 3DS I don't think Switch is being aimed primarily for use by kids. Not with the design aesthetic and price. That design wouldn't be out of place on a PlayStation.

Hasn't the last 2 consoles from Nintendo had a similar white background...

Either way I think there is some speculation that there might be "themes"...

"Themes" are only available on your secondary device (phone, tablet) where you're running the Chat Application.

Looks like there's themes, at least it has a light and dark theme. Probably expand beyond that later.

The guy who claims he was "just lucky" in getting a Switch two weeks early was reportedly using a stolen console.

Last week, NeoGAF user HippoTheRobot posted videos of the UI and unboxing of a Nintendo Switch - which he claims he received two weeks ahead of official release by "just being lucky" and having his retailer ship his pre-order early. Now, Nintendo is stating that actually, this is a stolen console which has been illegally resold.

"Earlier this week, individuals claimed to prematurely purchase a small number of Nintendo Switch systems from an unspecified retailer. Nintendo has determined these units were stolen in an isolated incident by employees of a U.S. distributor, with one system being illegally resold. The individuals involved have been identified, terminated from their place of employment and are under investigation by local law enforcement authorities on criminal charges," said Nintendo in a statement to IGN.

I remember getting n64s that fell off the back of a truck when I was younger. Was an awesome Christmas that year lol. I remember getting the n64 and then having to run all over creation to get a copy of Mario 64 and I think it was like $80 bucks for that game and I played it for months cause there was nothing else really worth it. Thank god I had my saturn

So VC will be delayed as will any announcements regarding what happens to people's existing VC purchases on other Nintendo platforms. I think it's bloody hilarious and indicative of how cowed Nintendo fans are by that company that the best the article hopes for is "discounts to fans when re-purchasing Virtual Console games they own already". I would have more patience for Nintendo's upgrade VC program if the VC was any good in the first place (the NES Classic offers better emu than the Wii U ffs).

Edit: As this is more launch stuff I'll add it in here rather than the tech thread

..The biggest current issue with the Switch is one of basic reliability. Over the course of my time with Breath of the Wild, I’ve had repeated problems with the left Joy-Con controller partially or even completely losing sync from the Switch console while docked and connected to my television. This is a pain in the ass at best, but has also resulted in several deaths playing Breath of the Wild...

Further backed up by Jason Schreier of Kotaku on twitter, I'm not posting this as a "ZOMG Switch is broken" but rather as further evidence that Switch is coming in rather hot. With the near 2 year all-but-hiatus on Wii U software I was expecting a significantly broader launch s/w line up and a considerably more mature O/S.

Edit: As an update Jason Schreier has noted on Twitter that the issue was so bad he stopped playing Zelda with the joycons and moved to the Pro controller

Hi...I think people make the false assumption that just because the hardware is more capable that it directly increases the cost of development, and in truth, it actually lowers the cost. Look at what small Indie developers can accomplish these days on a barebones budget. Creating 3DS'ish games would only be that much easier for developers thanks to the extra processing power, and more modern gaming engines and tools supported. I see no reason why 3DS developers wouldn't 100 percent support Switch. We already know Dragon Quest will be released on Switch, and that is a huge game in Japan. Indie support has been very strong on both the 3DS and Wii U, so I see no reason why that wouldn't continue. The only 3D support that is really a huge question mark is the Western AAA game support.

True.

However, competition with other devs pushes up prices. The cost of creating a NES level game now would be trivial, but against other games with better animation and particles and whatnot, your game will look inferior, have less content, and be a harder sell. (Obviously there are some indie games that have managed to get by with the most basic of content, but they are the exceptions to the rule.) Thus more powerful hardware leads to more expensive costs and the consoles are full of multi million dollar AAA titles instead of $500 8 bit NES-like titles. It's a given that the average cost of a high-quality Switch game will be higher than the equivalent quality 3DS title (64 MB assets versus 3072 MB assets).
