Nintendo Switch Event 2017-01-12 and Switch Launch discussion

Stuff like this is why I could cancel my pre-order the week before launch (that and because it arrives the same week as Horizon Zero Dawn). That said, plenty of games are rough pre-launch and the Wii U version has had more than enough time for polish whereas the Switch version likely has not. The GameSpot guy played the Wii U version at E3 (presumably 2016) and said the Switch version they played today is not the final version.

Zelda does look good though. Survival, crafting, Witcher-style battle preparations.

Those of us who lived through it can attest that PSN being run on zero income was shit compared to PSN being run on actual income. PSN is far from perfect but boy it was bad during PS3. Launching Switch without online pricing is awful. Not an issue for me as I never play online but how do Nintendo expect others to make an informed decision without knowing the running costs down the line?

Paid network is not a problem on my side...

I think Nintendo will cut the price after 6 months when the sales will not be so good...

People who says the price is high are way underestimating how much the stupid controller and attachments must cost at this stage. Before Nintendo can ramp production, they will be looking at a pretty steep price for that stuff. And Nintendo does not sell hardware at a loss so it is expected that they will charge a huge premium for it. It can be remember of the Wii U launch where nothing was especially high priced in the whole console but the price was much higher than the competition and was still speculated to barely break even for Nintendo.

This console is shaping up to be exactly what I had expected since the reveal. Overpriced and gimmicky and Nintendo still haven't learned anything. You think a delay would mean they would have software and games ready but this is just sad. Not only do they not even have a competitive online platform to xbox live of 2006, they think they can change for it?

I think they launch the console now because they want to launch before end of fiscal year...

Without being an arse about it, money isn't an issue for me either, but because I don't game online I can't see any circumstance where I'll be paying Nintendo for online access unless they run some PS+ like service. Even then, in my experience of PS+ on PS3/PS4/Vita, these schemes really only offer value a year or so down the line when there is a surplus of quality software to serve up.

Switch is going to become to become the new reference case for people studying business choices for new platforms and how they spell death for your company. Seriously?! Their paid online services provides a one month 'demo' of the decades-old titles while their rivals offer complete titles of new games you haven't already bought three times before?

None of this surprises me, Nintendo live in a bubble and frankly a lot of the US games media reinforces that because their childhood is intertwined with Nintendo products. I mean what other company would get away with $5 for 30 year old ROMs, making you buy them twice (or a pay an upgrade fee), offer worse versions than can be obtained through piracy, have the worst account management system in the business and still get regular articles that paint them as The One Good Thing In The World Of Games. From the moment I woke up it was obvious to me that their wording meant a 30 day demo, it's all there you just have to accept what you're reading and not apply the 'but Uncle Nintendo loves me' filter.

The good news is that the Wii U version of Zelda is good for those who want to play the game on this console.

It should be, given that GPU "theoretical" performance is right about the same when Switch is docked (and is using the higher clock speed). Not sure about CPU. And i just realized that third party support for most multiplat AAA games is probably not happening.

Nintendo Switch Parental Controls

Thoughts as I was watching the video:
  • Okay, they may have something here.
  • In fact, I would say they may have one upped the competitive offerings, particularly by making it app based.
  • Wait... are you joking?
A cookie to whoever can guess the time stamp for that last remark. =)

Nintendo has a core audience and they don't expect the Switch to expand that so they might as well make money off the hardware and accessories. It'll be kept alive by the faithful who are hell bent on rescuing a naive girl from a serial kidnapper.

60 seconds!

How can it be per system instead of per account? You'll get warnings when you're playing that the time for your kid has expired.
There's probably only 1 account per system allowed and no profiles, so an adult has to turn off the warnings when they're playing.

You're correct, the parental controls video calls this out specifically at 0:52 when they say policies apply to the "system not individual players". As long as the parental control app has a quick and easy on/off it should be OK, unless both devices need to be on the internet or wifi network for the app to communicate.

So many problems with that concept though, couple you've pointed out
  • Will annoy the shit out of you if you forget, which will happen a lot.
  • and if you forget and have suspend on.... bye bye game.
  • Multiple app installs per Switch device? Probably not. Oh my wife has control but she's at work and can't access her phone.
  • Internet will be required.... for both devices. There's no way it will have local LAN support.
  • Would need to be adjusted depending on the child using it in circumstances. You would want different settings between a 5 year old and a 15 year old.
The idea of doing parental controls without profiles on the device is just stupid.

Yeah it's weird the idea is in some ways very forward in that a lot of parents will appreciate an app on their phone with an interface that is familiar to them but if you are already comfortable operating a Nintendo device or are just comfortable with tech already you're out in the cold. There is a third option, both Android and IPhones support NFC so if the console supported it you could to 'tap to configure' (presumably with some registration process).

Edit: At 1:25 in the video the sleep prompt has a prominent 'Disable Parental Controls' button which will presumably be PIN locked or some such

Absolutely. And not just a negative for Switch as it is, I consider this pretty damning for the whole OS and services of Switch and Nintendo going forwards. There's so much wrong with Switch, it's just going to be a dog. Worse than PS3 at launch. Even if I were a Nintendo fan I'd be very hesitant about buying into Switch in case it never gets fixed and ends up incredibly frustrating to use.
