Ninja Theory's new game: Enslaved

What a fucking bitch. If I wer him I might have probably hit her on the head when she didnt look, cut off her tongue while she was unconsious and beat the crap out of her when she woke up.
Then I d save her only if she took off that thing from my head .

Sheesh ! You guys are so violent. I would seduce her first and then think about removing the headband ;) !

BTW, I really dig the way she looks at monkey when he wakes up with headband. That is where NT excelled in HS too. Amazing expressions using the eyes, seeing that they can pull off such expressions in UE3 too shows that its all about tye sensibilities rather than the tech. If you know what needs to be done to get that expression right, you'll get it somehow even with basic movements of the face.

The only thing I loved a lot in that demo was those expressions in the last cut scenes.

Yeah but all your seduction plans will be foiled by his long monkey tail. May be you can ask her if she has supermodel friends. They may be more adventurous.

Same. The cutscenes were great. I'm guessing the game will have a lot of those moments.

You mean that piece of cloth he wears? To be honest, I always thought that was a tail too.

A piece of cloth stuck to his *ss ? I'm not sure. Caught a glimpse of it in one of the trailers. Either way, I think it's very hard for the girl to fall for him. XD

Played the 360 demo this morning.

Good.
I like the use of colors and art style.
Story could be interesting. Characters didn't seem generic
Cutscenes were nice also

Bad.
The game is all style, no substance
Very poor combat
Scripted platforming which can be visually pleasing but again, no real gameplay challenge

The game seems cool but it's missing a key element, gameplay. Nothing in the post demo, full game preview showed me any different. I really can't imagine sitting through this one. Considering Castlevania is out at the same time, I know which action game I'll be getting in October.

The problem is that Ninja Theory still, even after Heavenly Sword, somehow believes that gameplay is merely a vehicle to take the player from one elaborate cutscene to another, they have to get over the whole "digital performance" gimmick, at the end of the day it still has to be a good game.

Don't you think it looks as if NT took Hanuman (a Hindu deity from thr Indian mythology, for those who don't know) as an inspiration while designing Monkey in Enslaved ? Right from the crown to his looks with a pink-ish tint covering the area surrounding his eyes. Surely I can't be the only Indian (who is into games) thinking this. :p

Yes ! Andthe classic monkey costume which u get if you pre-order the game gives him Hanuman like clothes too. He looks just like Hanuman in that costume. I think the story of HS was very indian too as the very base of the story relied on female foeticide and a female child being a non welcome member of the family. They wanted a boy and instead a girl was born leading to dissappointment and efforts to kill the child. Exactly what happens in rural India everyday !
I have contemplated many times that the very Indian roots to the story musb be the reason for my liking the story and the protagonist so much. I could empathise with her in a very real way.

I played through the demo last night and then, I just couldn't help myself, loaded Heavenly Sword for comparison as they just look and feel so similar.

Even though it's 3+ years old now HS still had the upper hand when it came to the character models and the scenery. I'd forgotten just impressive it is, and also how amazingly infuriating the control scheme could be!

Either Ninja Theory were ahead of the curve with HS or they aren't really putting much effort into Enchanted... I mean Enslaved...

Played the demo, graphics are nice, kind of jaggy. Very colorful. The preview after the demo showed even more impressive graphics. The backgrounds and foliage detail are quite a lot better looking than Heavenly Sword. The platforming is basically automated I guess, yet I was still constantly scared of falling, I wonder if that changes? It's nice to see a very colorful game for a change.

All in all, I dont know, will it fall into the Mirrors Edge trap of looks interesting, but not enough to purchase?

I wondered myself when I played Enslaved demo: Consider it is a 2010 game and compare it to HS which is a 2007 game...not such an impressive graphics update(?) as one could have hoped for.

But as Kittonwy said: I did not like the gameplay in the Enslaved demo, especially the platforming. It does not feel good, for me a similar feeling when playing the Ubisof games (Prince of Persia and Assassins Creed). Fighting was ok-ish.

On the other hand, some of the screen shots I saw looked spectacular with super great settings and landscapes...I still keep an eye on this one.

Hmm, he's right it does have a lot of the markings of the typical flop.

-Colorful characters and bright setting (seems most games that sell are gritty)
-New IP
-Perhaps most of all, it's not an FPS, RPG, RTS, etc. Not one of the established genres.
-Has a female sidekick :p
-Has good/ok graphics, but not amazing enough to stand out.

I dunno, like I said it does look like a flop. Maybe it wont be. But It smells like one to me. Hope they didnt spend too much on development...
Well it seems they'll win half the battle on the review side of things. Edge gave it a solid 8 and I'm sure others will be even more generous with their scores. Heavenly Sword received a 5 or 6 from Edge. I guess HS had higher expectations, however this is still good for NT.

Now they just need to show a few of those nice set pieces in an ad and sell the game. :D

Looks like the game will need word of mouth to sell. Interesting that the press give it high scores. I'll most likely check it out.

I also think that Heavenly Sword is awesome. Loved the landscape and the villains. Enslaved should have more ingredients to make a richer story and game though. The Monkey God is supposed to have dazzling skills. The monsters should be a lot more varied than HS's grunt soldiers.

Not to mention that the soundtrack too has a fairly distinctive Indian feel to it, like Heavenly Sword's soundtracks. (well its done by an Indian composer)

Another rave review:
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/01/enslaved-review/

So, yes, there are some extremely well-conceived central mechanics and some thrilling interludes that I wouldn't dare spoil. But the real reason that Enslaved is so easy to recommend is the excellent writing by Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine) and performances by Andy Serkis and Lindsey Shaw.

The dialog (and there's not a ton of it, mind you) between the two leads and late arrival Pigsy is so fluid, funny and endearing that pretty much every other game on the market should be embarrassed. It is, simply, the best example of this oft-neglected facet of game design since Uncharted 2.

By the end of Trip and Monkey's odyssey, I actually wanted to keep spending time with them and was sad that I would miss out on whatever they would do next.

...

Sadly, Enslaved is kept from its full potential by distracting (though not deal-breaking) technical shortcomings. The frame rate will often slow to a chug, and there's a persistent, annoying graphical stuttering (for lack of a better term) that often kills the fluidity of the action.

4.5 stars out of 5.

Has anyone heard about how long Enslaved is supposed to last, or whether there 'll be at least some incentive to revisit the story?
