Ninja Theory's new game: Enslaved

How can you tell? I think this and castlevania will do pretty well. Can't remember when they release though so maybe I'll flip flop.

Hmm, he's right it does have a lot of the markings of the typical flop.

-Colorful characters and bright setting (seems most games that sell are gritty)
-New IP
-Perhaps most of all, it's not an FPS, RPG, RTS, etc. Not one of the established genres.
-Has a female sidekick :p
-Has good/ok graphics, but not amazing enough to stand out.

I dunno, like I said it does look like a flop. Maybe it wont be. But It smells like one to me. Hope they didnt spend too much on development...

Unfortunately I agree to an extent. I don't want this game to flop at all, it could turn out very good, but I also don't see this turning into a smashing success.

I like Ninja Theory and how they tend to go against the grain with games, hopefully Enslaved works out for them.

Time to leave work then. I'm skeptical, but really curious. I love Heavenly Sword, but for some reason I'm not exactly pumped about Enslaved.

Demo is nice. Graphics is good, framerate is ok but tearing is pretty bad. There is definitely some motion blur in the PS3 version, probably just camera mb.

I'm pretty disappointed to be honest. The game looks good, but I certainly do miss Heavenly Sword's image quality. It also has this super shiny and grainy-ass look that imo plagues just about every UE3 game. Still, it's more than serviceable despite the surprising amount of tearing and what seemed to me like a rather unstable framerate. The two lead characters look absolutely gorgeous as long as you don't compare Monkey to the brilliant Kratos character model. It's just that I expected a bit more from the developer who created the far and away best looking near-launch PS3 title. Time just didn't stand still.

What really bugged me however is how sluggish the game controls, especially during the traversal sections. Makes them feel even more automated than they already are. The blinking points of interested look totally out of place as well, but considering how the shiny-ness of just about every nook and cranny has been turned up to eleven, it might have been rather hard to spot them amongst all the bloom and glitter.

Other than that the demo is most certainly a rather poor representation of the game as there's none of the (hopefully) interesting dynamics between the two characters on display here. You just control Monkey through some heavily skripted, simplistic and rather repetitive sequences (the game starts off with you going through a couple of identical segments of the slave ship, and in each segment the floor collapses - very clever), do a couple of jumps and lay the smack down on a couple of combat robots. Otherwise it's very reminiscent of the Uncharted 2 introduction sequence where you have to escape from the falling train car, just without the sense of awe and wonder (the timing is just nowhere near as good)

I am disappointed as well....unstable framerate, screen tearing & rather average looking visuals (some parts like the explosions & smoke are very bad looking with clippings & hard edges everywhere ).....along with a massive input lag and almost entirely automated platforming.

Demo started off pretty slow, as it appears to be the very beginning of the game. However, IMO, it picks up quite nicely towards then end, with a nice sense of tension as you try to escape. The comparison made by someone to the UC2 train escape section is pretty apt, IMO. Particularly one section where you're climbing to avoid on oncoming disaster that can be seen approaching in the background (I thought that part was very nicely done). The ending cut-scene actually had me pretty upset (in a good way). I was rather surprised by the male lead characters reaction to the female leads actions
I was thinking to myself "this bitch!" I didn't expect him to calm down so quickly. I think I would, personally, have been pretty damn upset and incredibly suspicious in that situation. Although there was good reason not to show such anger given the slave helmet, I don't think I would have been quite so accepting so quickly.
Overall, I enjoyed it, but my view is likely largely skewed by my interest in the story. Combat, controls, and graphics all seemed workable.

Jumping animations look REALLY canned and automatic. When I actually played the demo jumping FELT canned and automatic, like how they did ladder climbing in Heavenly Sword sans the x button prompt, it's like I don't control the timing of the jump, or direction for that matter. Character movement is a touch too laggy and it felt like I had to fight the character's momentum, definitely NOT fun or responsive controls. Combat was shallow as hell. Once again they prioritized cinematics over gameplay designs and sensibilities.

I find the comparison to the U2 train section rather insulting to one of the best games this generation, U2 platforming was highly responsive, there were plenty of options in terms of how to approach the level whether you want to go stealth/pull downs or you want to fight on the roof or inside the train car, whereas the enslaved demo basically is completely and utterly linear in gameplay options, there were NO options in terms of how you navigate the level.

He is referring to the first level of U2, it doesn't offer any choice in navigation either. As for tye gameplay of Enslaved, it feels very weak !

The imagination is very very beautiful, but tye realisation of the environments in Unreal Engine 3 is very very flat ! The single value as a flat ambient light kills any percieved depth in shadow areas and pretty much half of the objecta are in the shadow during daylight. If only differnt intensity and colours of ambient lights were applied in the environment(like HL2), then the environments wouldn't have looked so damn flat and 2D. Areas in shadow look almost toon rendered, absolutely flat. Part of it can be addressed by adding grime in the corners but that hasn't been done either. Don't know if its all dueto engine limitations(the flat ambient value and lack of grime in texture details) or if the team had too much work at hand, but it has killed the presentation. It could have been the most beautiful environments in a game, but as it stands, it has fallen very short of it.

Well I played the demo and I'm kind of mixed. On the one hand, I love the colors - very colorful game - but as Renegade put it the flat ambient for most of the level didn't do much for the look. There was also some texuring streaming problems and it has one of the worst cases of the UE3 tinfoil effect yet. Other than that it seems like a highly cinematic game which I dig. Honestly there wasn't much there to get a good picture of the gameplay but I really didn't care for the staff fighting; after I destroyed the first guy I was wondering if I could just run past the rest of them. Seems like an interesting premise though so I'm definitely going to check it out sooner or later.

Also, nothing to do with the game but I hate when I download a huge demo only to find out most of it was cutscenes. Here I am thinking "wow this must be a long demo" then I play for ten minutes and it's over.

I played the demo 5 minutes ago. I thought it's ok (as in no big bad issues). Like the colorful world. Don't know what to make of the story and gameplay yet. The fighting seems ok. Platforming does reminds me of Uncharted except that the character doesn't reach his hands out for the next latch.

Good to see it scores a 9.

I saw a recent video where the game impressed me more graphically. In some ways I think it surpasses Heavenly Sword or at least is a worthy successor for the developer.

This and the Bioshock Infinite clip just show what a high level of graphics we take for granted now. It's like every game looks great, and this gen has pushed graphic boundries far farther than I would have thought possible in 2005 with X360 launch titles (I still remember everybody going gaga over GRAW's graphics in March 2006, let alone Gears of War in November of that year :p)

Of course both are on the new UE3, which does look pretty great despite some standard UE3 shortcomings.

I wish there was an X360 demo of this.

I dont know about you but I wanted to smash that bitch's face. :)

You shout at her at the beginning, she sees you and leaves
You ask her to open the door to get into an escape pod, she looks at you and ignores you while everything around you is about to explode.
You get outside her escape pod, you hit the glass to open it so you can leave from the falling ship with her, she doesnt give a damn.
You tell her NOT to launch the escape pod since you are on it, she just stares at you and launches it.
In general she didnt give a rats ass about your survival.
And when you land somewhere you wake up, she watches at you with a cowardly expression and you discover that she attached on your head a slave object which can kill you with a single command of hers.
Ironically she did that so she can use you for her survival.

What a fucking bitch. If I wer him I might have probably hit her on the head when she didnt look, cut off her tongue while she was unconsious and beat the crap out of her when she woke up.
Then I d save her only if she took off that thing from my head .
