Looks like that decision is also up in the air for MMOs. At least for FFXIV.

Q: Do you need a PS+ membership to run the PS4 version?
A: A Sony representative actually came up to us during this conference and said they'd like to talk about out it when we return to Japan. TBA

If I recall correctly, MS made a Live Gold exception for FFXI when it launched on the 360. Might not be a bad idea as a standard policy for MMOs and maybe F2Ps.

Ah, GAF summarized Scott Rohde's video interview. I didn't finish it:

DRM
"Online passes, we did announce that it's going away. That's because with PS+ being required to play online games, it doesn't make sense to have an online pass in conjunction with that."
"On very general terms, one business can't really dictate to another business what they want to do. So, in general, we're setting the standard, setting the tone, for the way we believe business is fairly run."
"At the end of the day, if they want to find a way to do it they can, but it's... I don't believe that's going to happen because we're setting the standard and all those publishers were there, they heard the applause. They know that consumers wants what's best for them."
"Internally, our goal was always to do what's best for the consumer."
"It's bigger than digital rights, that's the thing. We're talking about what everyone perceives as physical games. It's something you go to a store, you pay money for it, put it in your bag, and you take it home with you, and then when someone tells you what you can do with that thing? It doesn't feel right."

The Price
"It was a nice target that we put in place long, long ago. Years."
"I'm not going to say it was set in stone because you're never sure if you can achieve it from a business point of view, but that was absolutely the goal from day one."

Paying for Multiplayer
"Quite frankly, it costs a lot of money to run a service like that, so it was important to us to try to explore all our options while still giving the customers a great value. So that's why the instant game collection was started about a year ago and we're absolutely planning to continue that in grand form moving forward."

Putting Services Behind Paywalls
"That just frankly doesn't make sense to us to say you need to pay for a subscription so that you can activate your paid subscription. It just doesn't make sense."

- Hard drive is user-replaceable.
- Third party USB controllers should still work.
- Free to play games might not need PS+. Game-by-game decision.
- Won't confirm $60 games, but "makes logical sense."
- One PS+ account will apply to all accounts on the system.
- Remote Play not mandated, part of the OS and just works. Working with publishers for custom control schemes.

The bits about one PS+ account needed per system and free to play games maybe not needing PS+ are new or I missed it

He also basically confirms what I've always suspected about the PS4 design. It was literally being created with the eye towards putting out the most powerful $400 machine they could. As far back as the earliest spec leaks from 2011 I could sense that they were targeting their machine squarely at $400.

Sounds good. And yeah, I agree about this one, I think that was the most important bit, that the collective press and consumers got a clear opportunity to say how strongly they felt about the DRM issue:

"At the end of the day, if they want to find a way to do it they can, but it's... I don't believe that's going to happen because we're setting the standard and all those publishers were there, they heard the applause. They know that consumers wants what's best for them."

But the Ubisoft president has indicated that for them it's not off the table. He said that the only resale that they feel is hurting them ('not sending back enough money to invest in new games' is a nice way of putting it) is the one that happens early on, someone playing the game for a few days, then selling it back to the store. So they will keep looking for ways to prevent that from happening, you can be certain.

@Brad: yep. Actually that 399 was likely even long before that, I think. When did the PS3 designer resign again? ;)

I think that makes sense. Come up with a price point and thermal budget and work from that.

That's huge. So one PS+ account means both my wife and I can play online.

I still do not like paying extra for multi-player but at least that keeps it within reason, having to pay for PS+ for every account would be a major turn off.

Cheers

Imo Sony over did it on the hardware front they did not need to push that much, though they could not know that MSFT would be so conservative or that they would start this gen with what so far has been a PR disaster.
I wonder how much they subsidize the system, I also wonder what will be the reaction of the people that choose the ps3 because PSN was free. It is a non issue now, on the web, as MSFT takes quit a beating for its online policies, though when it is all said and done, I wonder how the average people that bough the ps3 are going to react to the PSN subscription.

I've a tough time thinking about all of thsi, the web is acting crazy costumers are more down on earth, I wonder about how real costumers are going to perceive not only the ps4 but also the Xbox1.

USB ports match sizes so it looks like it's an accurate representation..... Damn impressive if you ask me.

How accurate is Xbox One dimensions ? Is the box MS showed even final ? I remember the PS3 shell changed a little along the way.

Are the boxes visible in E3 ? As in playable on table tops ? Why can't someone just measure one and confirm the numbers ?

The dimensions for both machines have been released and the picture is accurate...
