Here's the teaser video.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but the colored and curved "lightnings" are screaming "Xperia" all over the place. It's just like the wallpapers and boot animations from Sony's Xperia smartphones and tablets.
Playstation Xperia? Playstation X? Playsperia? X-Station? XperiaStation?
It suggests lots of interactivity and service integration between PS4 and Xperia devices?

This would fit into the "One Sony" strategy, where the company seems to make the Xperia devices into the central piece of Sony's ecossystem:

But I'm probably just reading too much into it.

If they have nothing to deliver right away (as in pulling out 14+4 boxes from underneath your seat), then something at that strategic Sony level -- with partnership announcements -- might make sense since it's more nebulous/vague.

Well you have to be over 18 to sign up for updates so it's not about phones

What update ?

I am more inclined to think it's a nextgen vehicle like Gaikai, or 3D-next, or 4K-something, or Playstation-addon for all devices at Sony level. But not the console itself.

[Do you think Vita will be in it ?]

EDIT: They may need to announce the shift from a console-focused model to a service-focused, soft-platform future. It's Kaz's thing.

Good thing I didn't miss this. Will check back in early Feb.

One Sony I don't think is necessarily about rebranding all of Sony's products.

Xperia's name is for their phone line and tablet line. Like Nexus for Google and Galaxy for Samsung.

One Sony is about interconnectivity imo. Your diagram is showing lines of directions for cross-connectivity. If Remote Play is any indication (I hope it is), it means that Playstation is not something that can only be accessed at your home TV with the Dualshock anymore. That's what One Sony is about.

For years and years they have talked about a centralized multimedia experience. Accessing all that media wherever you are I'm guessing is also a part of that future. The hub can be online or from the Playstation, but the access point is meant to be from anywhere.

After so many consecutive failures of relaunching Sony brands, maybe they will finally get it right beginning with Xperia, Vita, and Orbis.

So far with the technology behind Vita and Xperia, they at least appear on the right track. As a PlayStation fan beginning with Final Fantasy VII and Syphon Filter, I'm hoping this track leads to better days for PlayStation.

Announce now for a fall release? Maybe they don't care about sales of PS3 (and to a lesser extent, Vita sales) between now and then?

It's already late for announcing it for a November release, there seems to be a poker move going on between MS ans Sony. If you were them and thought you had the upper hand, would you want to announce before or after? What about if you thought you had a less powerful console? I have no idea.

You announce close enough to release to maintain buzz and not devalue current product. As for competitors you up sell the advantages/differences whatever they may be.

I'm also of the opinion that this is too early for a November annoucement. If they even show games, it will be still in a rough state. They don't want to give away any unique features in the annoucement allowing competitors to copy. Tablet and smartphones have shown that you can have a short window for announcement and release and get plenty of hype. A May announcement and June game blowout in E3 makes more sense. I never really understood the benefit for 8-10 month early annoucements. I mean with the PS3, it made sense so you could have time to find your second job but the PS4 should be more affordable. Maybe they will release much earlier than November.

yeah, but I mean Kaz implied they were waiting for MS to make the move. And another exec said it would be around May. Why the deception? Are they being reactive about the competition? What's to gain here?

That's why I'm guessing whatever they announce will be applicable to current gen consoles too. It may not be PS4 per se.

You're operating under the presumption Pachter is correct and a Feb new console announcement is imminent? As for what Kaz said, I'd take that with a bucket of salt. These things are planned, plans may move, but no one is 'waiting' for the other guy. Regardless of what MS announces Orbis is pretty much a done deal if it's launching this year (same for durango).

I'd be surprised if Sony announces in February, but they've teased stuff early in the past. They could very well say they are launching the greatest console ever in November and no details.

Heck, it could be a depth sensing, HD PSEye with voice tech for Sony devices for all we know. :runaway: or VR goggles

Its called a head fake. Who cares what noncommittal, evasive answers they've given in the past?

No. I'm looking for a credible angle to say he's wrong.
The media really caught this up and are spinning it, they better say it in advance if it's not the PS4, otherwise whatever they announce will be ignored.
