News & Rumours: Playstation 4/ Orbis *spin*

Does anyone know whether PS4 supports voice control features like Durango?

I had not heard anything specific, but given how voice controlled is becoming a bigger feature draw, I would be surprised if Sony didn't have it available in one shape or another. Then again, I've been surprised by them before...

TBH, I hope voice control is NOT in PS4, as I'd rather I'd be dragged off to the nuthouse if I was to take it into my head to start speaking to a games console.

That's a stupid reason to hope it's not in there, as if it is in there, it would still be OPTIONAL! ;)

If PS4 bundle a headset, it should be able to support voice recognition in-game.

FWIW, the net found a SCEA voice recognition R&D internship last year.

I don't think voice recognition in game or VR for the sake of VR is terribly interesting.

The thing about features like Siri is the NLP and the prospect of it learning the kind of things you want to look up or do and it gaining capabilities over time.

So it's the promise of a virtual assistant or agent which would learn what you want and do a lot of the tasks for you, not just execute a set of specific commands tied to a limited vocabulary.

It depends on where devs go with it, or if it's a mandated feature. What if some game you want to buy includes voice control without an alternative option? Let's say FIFA add voice commands. Now FIFA players have to use voice commands to access those features. If voice is just navigating menus with the voice and a stick+button achieves the same, no worries, but voice control could, theoretically, become a compulsory and annoying feature for some (can't see that happening myself though).

Thing is, a game that flat out requires Kinect for voice control also requires the system to be online to get data back from servers. Oh wait...

Anyway, developers aren't dumb. It's not as if they hated Kinect. There's little point in working on a non-integral gameplay feature that at best addressed only 33% of the market (24/76 million).

Only thing that might be cools is if you're playing FIFA and you say "pass me the ball" and it does.

But in FIFA, you're always controlling the player with the ball so it's not like you're moving your player around off the ball.

You could probably do some interesting things with voice commands in a single-player squadron based FPS like SOCOM tried to do 10 years ago.

The PS3 launch game announcement, Eyedentify, seems hot. :p

But you know it's going to be tedious because of the repetition. ;-)

Until we have full blown AI overlords capable of intuitive understanding of our desired intent I think voice control is going to remain pretty close to this:

Cheers

The thing is, MS will have Kinect Voice support as part of their TCRs which all titles will have to support in some form or another.

Which gives impetus for Sony to also support voice control to maintain parity with the 720 version of MP titles.

The new PS Eye has a multi mic array so the hardware is there, they just have to take care of the software.

Hard to say. They may want touch pad selection instead of voice integration if the game is controller-based.

Touch-based input is RemotePlay friendly.

Voice input may or may not.

I doubt Sony would mandate support for voice control regardless of what Kinect does. They been pretty lax about making publishers put money and man hours into their projects like Move and EyeToy.

I expect them to try to lead by example like usual, and just not be direct about it and try to interfere. Move support for Killzone, voice recognition in another game or app like Netflix... I think it's the better approach. I just don't see a huge allure of voice recognition driving the sales of any products. It's like the stuff in cars with Microsoft Sync. It's cool, but really who cares? Minority Report, it's nice, but I just want to sit down lol. It's a "minor" thing in the grand scheme of things here. The rest of the package like games, services, and price (including credit pricing models) will mean much more I think. I don't think voice control will have any such impact even a tenth as much as WiiMote did.

They'll just let others decide what makes sense for them at any time. In leading by example on Move and such they are doing an OK job, but can obviously do better. I'm mostly just happy they stuck with Move going forward... One less thing to buy :)

My secret wish would be for Sony to partner with Google for things like their voice search tech, integration with Google+, Google Hangouts, access to Google Music, Google Voice VOIP and of course YouTube video sharing.

All Google would ask in return is ads on the PS4 interface. Lovely.

They may also ask for a cut in transaction, or a subscription fee. The new Google seems different from the old one. They have changed. Probably safer to keep a distance, but still keep an open mind.

There are interesting voice recognition uses, speech to text, search, etc... but for games it's been trying to replace button actions, right in line with shake the controller, or lean your whole body to turn, or shout "pew pew" to shoot your gun.

All of these games would be ridiculously easy if they were to also support button inputs (choice? right?). They have to gimp the game until it's playable with seconds of lag and must be forgiving of misunderstood commands. If they want to add voice commands, it better improve the game, and I haven't seen that yet after over 10 years of gimmick uses (dreamcast, gamecube, eyetoy, kinect).

Really? Mass Effect 3? "Liara: Singularity" is the single most useful thing in that game, and significantly enhances the immersion and feel of the game.

I hear "Fus Ro DAH!" is also very satisfying in Skyrim.
