"In all honesty, higher sales would have been what we had hoped for," Sony UK managing director Fergal Gara told VG247. "The market Vita entered was more complicated than it was when the console was originally thought about and designed. Games on tablets and phones have changed the marketplace and people can't carry too many things around at one time."

"The truth is that the number of people that want the core experience [that Vita offers] is not as big as the number that simply want any sort of game available on the move and, because the likes of a tablet and smartphone are so multifunctional in their use, they will always be very appealing," he added.

Yes. I think they're not stopping with the Vita just yet though. I think they will focus on its streaming/remote PS4 functionality primarily and the Indy support will probably continue as well. I think that is why they are dropping support for anything that requires an additional fee, to get the Vita and PS TV cost as low as possible just for that purpose. Not sure where they will take it from there though.

The situation of 3DS is better but the the sales of DS were much better mobile console are on a tough spot with smartphone and tablet...

heh, they are still sticking calling playstation "computer" instead "playstation" for certification, customs, everything except branding.

Even if they use larger GDDR density and halve the chips the 300g must be coming from a change in the cooling. It also uses less power. I'm hoping it is less to produce and facilitates a prices drop, $299 or bust!

They'll only drop if they feel threatened by Microsoft though (or when sales start falling). ;) Sales are still good for Sony. Either Sony introduces the 1TB as the new $399 (added value) and drops price of 500GB model to clear old stock, or they bump the price up a bit for the "premium
lazy/non-techy consumer
."

Sales are falling, YoY they are down. The people willing to pay $399 is drying up while the casuals or price conscience people are waiting for a real price drop. A hard drive upgrade is not going to convince anyone to make the jump at $399, it will just be the higher margin new SKU which allows Sony to sell the lower end SKU at a slight loss.

A $50 shelf price delta between the 500GB and 1TB SKUs while the price difference to Sony might be $20. This $30 extra margin will help the 500GB break into a new price range, $349 might be it, but $299 would sell much better which drives PS+, peripherals and game sales.

For example:
500GB: $310 to make, $299 price --> -$10
1TB: $330 to make, $349 price -- > +$20

A 2:1 ratio (500GB:1TB) and the loss/gain would offset. We know the 1TB is not replacing the 500GB, they have two new SKUs.

Sales are a bit down cause a lot of the huge 2015 games are now huge 2016 games!

It was shocking that the PS4 was selling as it was, given the number of AAA games available. Sony couldn't hope to keep selling platforms without releasing anything even resembling a system seller in months. Third parties are running the game now.

It looks like a small revision, but the lower weight means they are trimming fat to lower the cost.

If they have GDDR only on top of the motherboard, they can ditch the entire bottom metal shield which acted as a heat sink, fewer chips would save a little power. The new power supply with 20 watts less can be lighter. GDDR at 1.35v instead of 1.5v could also save a few watts There are recent patents about a new bluray drive that can be a bit lighter. All of this can add up to a few dollars saved :)

Well, I'll have you know that Bloodbourne is considered a system seller to many
existing owners of the system
.

In reality it IS the thrid party games that are the system seller! Worked for the PS1, PS2 and Xbox 360. But somehow people have gotten it into their heads that first party exclusives have always been the games that sell systems...??? :-?*shrug*

I mean... if it's not an exclusive Ninendo game, or called Halo, then it's unlikely to do anything more than pad out and enrich a console library; which in itself is a worthy reason for it's existence.

They released more first party stuff so far this year compared to their competitor including Bloodborne a GOTY candidate. Sales are down because they have tapped most of the early adopters, software releases are going to make little difference unless they start throwing them into the box with mega bundles.

My problem is with the first party release schedule which can be summarized as: plan for november, launch in march.

300g could be from smaller but more efficient PSU. Console could still use the same ammount of power.

Or release everything in Oct-Dec and have nothing in the rest of the year, this will keep the fanboys and talking heads happy. Anything released Jan-Sept doesn't count as a game.
