News & Rumours: Playstation 4/ Orbis *spin*

I'd like to voice some of my favourite PS4 features:

Headphone/mic jack allowing me to listen to the game without the need of a dedicated headset is an absolute epiphany. You need to change the audio output setting for this to work.

Background downloads: this is amazing, not having to worry about pesky downloads is great. I've synced my phone to the PS4, so I've been able to set my PS4 to download a game while I'm at work. Just amazing. I wish the app didn't have to open a browser for this though.

Vita streaming: this works pretty well for Resogun and Lego Marvel. I wouldn'trecommend it for shooters mind. I've got my PS4 connected directly into the router, but I'm not sure whether the PS4 is connecting directly to the Vita via wireless, it seems as if I move from the PS4 I have problems, not if I move from the router.

I'd like to see games and even the OS use the touchpad of the DS4 more. Seems a bit wasted at the moment. Only one of the free-to-play games have used it properly.

Being able to use the motion sensors for text input is great, saves a lot of time. I click the right stick in to get this to work.

Anyways, I'm rather happy with this purchase. Feels like a proper console, even more than the 360 did. Gives me a feeling of the good old days of gaming. I just need some more games now.

Can't wait for mine to arrive! Next week can't come soon enough.

They may also be announcing the VR solution for the PS4 this week. Though it may just be a reiteration of the regular consumer model they've already announced.

Firmware v1.60 announced

SCEE have just announced firmware v1.60 available tomorrow, which brings support for the PULSE Wireless Stereo Headset and seemingly not much else.

Where's my suspend/resume functionality, Sony!?! :|

And a bunch of other features too. I am perplex its taking them so long to fix so many features and issues.

Ditto. Where's the mediaplayer features? MP3 support? :???:

Also, I am still baffled by some of the inherent faults of PSN. Tomb Raider Definitive Edition for example; Why is it so damn hard to include at the very basic minimum a field that lables what is on the disk/game? E.g. what voice languages and what subtitle languages?

I had a hard time trying to figure out if the game had multi language support or not - and google wasn't very helpful either. In the end, I bought it over my UK account. Bleh.

Also, how hard can it be to not mix fucking languages? I have my PS4 set to English, yet because I'm in a german region, half of the stuff (especially the whatsnew page) is mixed. And I'm not talking about the dynamically generated content (like xxXXXx is playing YyyY), but things that are rather static and should be displayed in the language I set my PS4 to.

Same for the store. AFAIK, there's only an EU store or better said Euro store. I have language set to english (I hate electronics with dutch language translations) but the store is still in dutch.

Actually Apple does the same. It's just stupid.

...AND microsoft also. Tons of stuff under windows don't care at all what language you've set, they just look at what your country setting is and present the corresponding language.

Also, I totally agree; it IS stupid. :(

Europe is not a single region in terms of content rights, censorship or film/game certification. So your language preferences mean nothing when the store is routing you to the store appropriate for your account region. If you want the Dutch store to optionally support English (or any other language) you need to lobby PlayStation Nederlands.

Sony’s PS4 VR Headset As Impressive As Valve’s

We’ve now received word from someone claiming to not only have tried Sony’s secretive virtual reality hardware but is actively developing software to utilise the device. Our source describes the HMD as having an FOV comparable to that of the Oculus Rift DK1 but with a much higher resolution. Further, the prototype our source had extensive time with, used two glowing orbs mounted atop the headset. Using a camera, assumed at this point to be the standard PS4 stereo camera that launched alongside the console late last year, the system tracks the user’s head in 3D space using the orbs to pinpoint position. Currently we have no information as to how head orientation is tracked, but it would make sense for Sony to include a solution similar to the Oculus Rift headtracker (IMU).

Perhaps more interestingly, though, is that our developer source claims also to have attended the recent Steam Dev Days event in Seattle and sampled Valve’s apparently impressive prototype VR headset. According to the source, the two HMDs compare very favourably. The general impression was that resolution was comparable between Sony’s and Valve’s unit (reported to use two 1080p panels) and that head tracking accuracy was very close.

Finally, the developer also tells us that Sony’s VR headset was supposed to be revealed already but that technical issues delayed the announcement. What those issues were, we do not know.

Ha, if there is anything we could say with certainly ...

But right now, the Oculus Rift still instills me with the most confidence. The person above probably compared Sony and Valve's efforts with the old devkit, not the Full HD OLED version. I also think the PS4 would have to make too many compromises again to deliver a satisfying experience. I'd prefer to spend some extra cash on a PC that can deliver a PS4 to each eye, so to speak.

There were lots of reports out of the Valve Developer Days that suggested their VR prototype was comparable (possibly even better) than the Occulus prototype with OLED and positional tracking show just before at CES.
