I certainly hope Sony isn't short sighted enough to try to force a subscription to Music Unlimited just to play MP3s.

Also, still no mention of a web browser?

    Cheers

The article appears to be the 1.5 changelog, not a feature list of previous versions.

So far I am having trouble finding any online reference to the background music player supporting anything other than Music Unlimited. No responses from staff on the Playstation blog despite questions high up in the comments about this.

    http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/08/20/music-unlimited-gets-amplified-on-ps4/

While not explicitly stating "you cannot play MP3s in the background", it seems like they are being consistent in mentioning Music Unlimited whenever they say "background music player" and ignoring requests for clarification.

Hopefully it's not true as Music Unlimited is abysmal for anything other than major label catalogs. It also would represent an unwelcome return of Evil Sony behavioural tendencies.

    Cheers

*If* it's like Vita, you can play music in the background at launch, or by default.

The MU background playback was added later.

What's written is you can listen to background (from and unspecified source) and you can access MU controls. If the service was MU only, it should be phrased as...
That also wouldn't mean background music wasn't present in v1 before hand.

I expected Sony to be behind in software.

If they are short of time, they should focus on stuff we pay "extra" money for first. i.e., PSN.
MP + party performances + spectating will be one of the first things I try.

IIRC ps3 needs to go online once to turn on wma playback. Could be something alike for BD.

They won't ship the 1.5 firmware on the game discs at launch? Just wondering if people really need to go online or not. I don't think anyone would buy PS4 to use exclusively for Blu-Ray, so if the firmware is on the game discs as well, not really a problem for those without Internet.

    Probably same as PS3 ?

BD and DVD playback online activation sound strange. Wait for the GAF horde to clarify with Shuhei. :)

For firmwares I think we should expect nothing less than the PS3 method...
    - Update with internet, if available.
    - Download the firmware manually and update by USB.
    - Get new firmwares automatically on newer game discs.

But internet required for BD? Shuhei !!!!!!!!

Shuhei ! You better don't screw with us. No, I don't mean the Playstation screw inside PS4. :runaway:

Gamestop people should just pre-activate all the PS4s for BR and DVD to differentiate from Amazon. -_-

I'm thinking maybe a one-time online activation could be linked to a payment for playback licensing. It would give Sony the record of how many hardware units are enabling BR, and legally they could get away with paying the license only for those units.

Maybe they are trying to sneak in a little savings on the license fees for DVD and Blu-Ray playback. What is it.. $5?

Sigh, stupid. I know that there was something about the XB1 having to be connected to the net as well before being able to play.

Considering that these consoles are on the limit with deadlines and software it's not that big a surprise, expect a flood of updates during the first months..

I hope someone is going to try and play a game from a disc before he/she updates, lets put the no internet required to a test. Please, i know i will.

Ugh! Nobody better have opened/messed with MY PS4 before I get my hands on the box, that's for sure. I hate when salespeople go and open my boxes, it totally triggers my (otherwise nonexisting) OCD.

When you open a new piece of equipment, that strong chemical smell is a consumer right. Nobody at gamestop should get that sniff. It's MINE !
