You can see it again at 6:29. It sure looks like a bulge nestled in there.
Anyone else notice the slight bulge on the right hand side in the unboxing video? I guess that's to fit the fan, given its circular aspect. That means the case must be pretty tight on the innards (which we knew anyway, but not even enough room to fit the fan fully is pretty extreme).
Perhaps this means you were examining a female PS4.Hmph.... weird ! Didn't notice it when I flipped the PS4 chassis yesterday.
Perhaps this means you were examining a female PS4.
Or maybe a male one, Playstations may be like seahorses.
Yes.Do you mean in the groove?
Yep.It's around 5:14 or 5:15 ?
No, the light play is different as the PS4 rotates. A reflection would be linear of a flat, shiny surface. You can even see a curved shape at the base in the groove. It's definitely a bulge in the plastic. It looks like a reflection of a rounded corner in the room. I think the PS4 has straight edges all round.
See above. Having watched it again now, its absolutely a bump. But it looks too small to be a case fan. Or at least, a large PS3 style fan.I looked carefully and could not see any bulge, I think that's just a variation in the matte texture of the moulded plastic of the top cover, making the light reflect slightly differently on that part of the cover.

Interestingly, Google doesn't through up any images of that side of the console, and I can't find Sony's PS media site for the press shock:'). However, other images show this side of the console is the one that fits into the stand for vertical use, so this bulge just may be part of that mechanism.
The bulge is in the first image on the right. That's where it is, but it cannot be seen in that photo. The second image shows the left side, but I can't find any images of the right side, which is a little strange as usually press shots cover every angle (that's why I want to find the Sony press media site). But that side will be extremely boring, so I can understand no interest in publicising its image if it doesn't exist. Here is both sides.
Oh, you're just dying for us to try and convince you to drop some hints. Otherwise, why this elaborate tease...?

Thinking about the mechanics of the stand, I imagine it slides into that groove. A round bump would be a conventional solution to enabling a 'click' into place. I'm very confident that's the explanation.
Who, you? NEVER!Are you calling me a tease??
Thank you. Yes, now I too see it. Didn't understand I was supposed to look at the left-hand side of the device. It does indeed look like some sort of key for a stand or such, although it could be fan-related too I suppose. Fairly small fan in that case though, probably no larger than the blower on a modern graphics card...ahhh
Ah, I finally see what you're talking about.
This thing right?
Ya it's most probably for the stand. Way too small and probably an illogical position for a fan of the PS4 design.
You view your CE devices from their POV? Wow, I can't empathise with my electronics to that extent. I see it as the right hand side based on me viewing it as it'll be used (and as it appeared in the video), rather than it being the PS4's own left-hand side.Grall said:Didn't understand I was supposed to look at the left-hand side of the device.
That was my original suggestion, but it looks too small, plus an odd design choice. Since then learning that the vertical stand slots into that groove, that bump is far better suited for a key for the stand than a little fan breathing space.Maybe it's a little breathing room for the fan?
It does look about the right size to accommodate a disk, but that'd be some seriously funky design! It'd mean taking in the disk on the left (right if you're Grall or a PS4) and sliding it to the right, and then using a drive without a complete enclosure where the disk hangs a little over the right-hand edge so that, when flush with a flat case, you need to cut a hole for the disk to fit.Isn't that where the location of the Bluray drive is? Does anyone have a picture of the board? perhaps we could take a look what would be located at the bottem left corner?
Naturally I meant the other left...You view your CE devices from their POV?

As there are more questions about the hard drive was, here are a few details: The PS4 a HGST (Western Digtal) inserted 2.5-inch drive with 500 gigabytes of memory and 5,400 rpm. Important info for all hobbyists: It will only plates with a maximum height of 12.5 millimeters in the case.
Update number 2 in terms of noise: After an hour in the operation, the PS4 is significantly quieter than the PS3. The new console settles at 0.83 Sone a, the predecessor controls the fan at prolonged high, reaching a whopping 2.1 sone.
1 Sone is 40dB for a 1kHz noise apparently.
So at 6-8ft which is the normal distance you won't be able to hear it.
EDIT: Still inaudible from a standard viewing position then after a hour, this bodes very well for multimedia.
Here's their testing feed, which they appear to be gradually updating. It would seem they're currently testing sound level of the system at idle, over predetermined periods of time (10 minutes and 1 hour), as compared against the PS3.
EDIT
Also some info on the HDD:
Google Translate:
The key takeaway being that the stock drive is 5,400 RPM and that the bay can take the taller 12.5 mm drives. That opens up a few more drive replacement options.
