Sony's global unit sales are out:

Their Xperias are outselling home and portable consoles combined by more than 200%.

I think these are further facts to add to the theory that although the PS4 will be powerful, Sony will try to make the Xperia line as the center of everything Sony.
- "Control this casual game with your Xperia",
- "Control your video/music playback in PS4 through your Xperia",
- "Buy games online to your PS4 through your Xperia, when you get home they're already downloaded and ready to play"
- "Use your Xperia phone or tablet as a secondary screen to manage the inventory in this HUD-less game, enhancing your gameplay"

What are the chances of PS4 actually coming with Android?

I would love a PS3 add-on for b/c and Linux + Android run-time to "overlay" the PS4 screen. ^_^

Heck, they can plug the new PS Eye to the PS3 add-on for extra features if they want.

Probably not happening but it's my top PS4 accessory, close to HMZ-T3. ;-)

Not that it really matters, but how do you come up with that? Their fiscal year target for the Xperia is 34M and 23M for the consoles combined. Q3 FY actually had the consoles selling more.

Is this the same math that has the Orbis being 200% of the performance of Durango? :)

I see the FY2012 forcast as 34 million for smartphones versus 23 million for home and portable consoles.

I'm actually surprised smartphones aren't higher. How many households have multiple smartphones (wife, husband, potentially children) and how many households are buying multiple Playstations? Chances are only two at most, and considering Vita's low sales, that's in the minority. So one per household is more likely.

Basically all that chart shows is that Console sales are seasonal while smartphone sales aren't as impacted by seasonality. But that shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

I was looking at Q1and Q2 numbers.

Yap, there's less than 200% Xperias being sold, but anyways it's still a lot more than the consoles alltogether.

Not that the PS4 won't work without a Xperia, but IMO the device will have a lot more appeal if coupled with Xperia devices. Like having an iphone, an ipad and a mcbook.

Microsoft managed to fail miserably in windows phone <-> windows desktop interoperability..

What's the ASP of those Xperias and are they profitable? Only the high end Xperias may be of use for controlling the PS4.

I know mobile is a key strategic product category that Kaz targeted for Sony's comeback.

Certainly makes sense to try to encourage customers of both Playstation and Xperia products to buy both categories.

But they'd be smart to pursue support for other iOS and Android devices, which outsell the Xperia.

Plus, they could get incremental sales of the DS4 if they supported them on other mobile devices, so that you can pair the DS4 to these other devices and control mobile games. Presuming of course the DS4 carries higher margins than consoles or Xperia devices. You would think they're making money by selling the DS3 for $55 all these years.

Well, the MP&C division (which contains all Personal and Mobile products including phones) did less badly than last year but the division is still losing money. Revenue increased quite significantly (164 billion Yen to 318.8 Billion Yen) while operating income went from -48.4 billion yen to -21.3 billion Yen.

If you combine that with the following statement.

Sales increased 94.4% year-on-year (a 92% increase on a constant currency basis) to 318.8 billion yen (3,665 million U.S. dollars). This increase was primarily due to the consolidation of Sony Mobile from February 2012, partially offset by significantly lower sales of PCs resulting from a decline in unit sales.

So while including Mobile drove up revenue quite significantly, it didn't drive up operating income significantly. I'd say their phones are still probably relatively low margin. And that would make sense as they, like most other Android phone makers, are struggling to maintain (not to mention trying to gain) marketshare from Samsung.

Is Xperia the only Sony smartphone brand ? Under Apple's and Samsung's shadows, Lumia moved 4.4 mil units in the last 2012 quarter. Is 2012 the first year Sony Ericsson got absorbed into Sony ? I haven't tracked closely. To date, Sony Xperia Z is the first model that got my friends' interests but Sony's marketing can't match Samsung's. The latter allegedly spent 10 times more than Apple last year. MS threw in a boatload of $$$ in W8 phone marketing too. If they want to grow faster, Sony will need to throw in smarter marketing $$$.

Can't you do this with todays tech (web store and remote play)? Also, if the Xperias are doing so great, why do Sony have to tie them closer to the PS family?

I think Sony is marketing the Xperias pretty good. They market them as a high-end, water proof Android phone. I think they are on the right track, the goal should be to be the 3rd largest smartphone manufacturer.

I think it's inevitable for Sony to branch off Android, like Kindle, to roll their own platform. But they should not pretend that they can beat Microsoft, Apple or Google at their games. As long as Sony make their ecosystem friendly with other Android and iOS devices, they should be ok.

I suspect a partitioned Android environment and familiar apps may bring more relevance to Playstation than PS3 b/c. But Sony should stay focused at this point. They need good, exclusive games first.

Not at the same level as Samsung's "noise"

Four = Shi (means death in Japanese), so yeah they might name it something else than PS4.
Sony doesn't need anymore bad luck ;)

They used the letter Z so much in all their latest flagship products... vaio Z, xperia Z, tablet Z. Why not the Playstation Z? Okay it looks too much like the PS2, but maybe that's why they discontinued it right before announcing the PSZ. :D

That why most people in Japan use Yon (Four). There's two words for seven as well, except in this case the second one exists because seven and eight sound similar when using the traditional word.

But either way, people in Japan have never said Playstation Ni (PS2). They always called it Playstation Two.
