No that's not what I meant. 
Virtual PC works as Kaotik describes. It's very fast and you can definitely use it for 2D games. But I've read/heard that "XP Mode" uses RDP to display its output. That would probably suck.

Hmm This XP mode has me intrigued. Since I recently updated my whole computer and decided to replace Vista Ultimate with Windows 7 Ultimate. I am curious. I have alot of old Emulation apps that use Visual Basic for ROM hacking and SRM editing. Should they work with the XP Mode Virtual PC?
All these programs give the error in Vista/Windows 7 that they are not compatible with the OS. Please find a 64 bit version of software.

I'm quite positive that the XP on the "XP mode" is 32bit, so they should work.
Thanks. I'm going to give it a try and see if it solves my issues. These are ancient apps. But I miss using them. Is there a reason why this wasn't able to run on Vista or just a marketing/feature thing to sell Windows 7?

I'm sure there's no technical reason, but Vista has a bad rep so I'm sure Microsoft are trying to get as far away from it as possible. XP mode is mainly a way to get businesses to transition to Windows 7, since a lot of businesses are running really old apps that only work on XP.
I'll never understand the hate for Vista. I upgraded 2 PCs and a laptop to Vista ((2 64 bit Ultimates 1 32 bit Home premium)) and I never looked back. I was completely satisfied by Vista..
With regards to Windows 7. I like it. Its definately an improvement over Vista. But to me it feels more like a Windows 2000 --> XP upgrade. Than a Windows 98 to Windows 2000.

XP Mode is "just" Virtual PC with a free XP license (for virtualised environments). Virtual PC [strike]is[/strike] was free for XP/Vista. The latest version is free for Windows 7 but XP Mode is only for Professional+. If you're still running XP/Vista you'll want Virtual PC 2007 (or Sun's VirtualBox, etc. etc.).
November update. As expected, Windows 6.x SKUs now account for over half the marketshare. More interesting perhaps is that both versions of Windows 7 raised their penetration while all others (including Vista) lost share. Also interesting is that the 64-bit version of Win7 has almost twice as much share as the 32-bit version. Related to that, while both versions of Vista dropped, the 64-bit version dropped less than its 32-bit counterpart. XP32 is still the single most prevalent OS version though with ~48% but it has been consistently dropping >2% share every month.
It's fantastic to see Windows 7 64bit double the 32bit, compared to Vista 32bit double the 64bit. Complete flip for windows 7. Due to multiple reasons I guess, a lot more Dell, HP etc. systems coming default 64bit now, maturity of 64bit proving to hesitant users they can switch and they don't have to be scared about compatibility as much, price of RAM and standard 4Gb+ systems pretty much requiring 64bit.
Also just noticed that the ATI 4800 series has the highest marketshare for DX10 systems now, finally toppling the 8800 series (Vista/W7 + DX10 GPU).

Even nicer is that DX9.x systems share appears to be accelerating downward. Maybe in another 1-2 years AAA devs might be able to start seriously considering dropping Dx9.x support. Still can't ignore 48.26% of the market unfortunately.
4 CPU machines have finally surpassed 1 CPU machines. But 2 CPU machines still dominate.
GTX 28x share is now falling. GTX 260 is still gaining respectably.
58xx series is showing the impact of limited supply as Oct->Nov only rose 0.17% while Sept->Oct rose 0.20%.
48xx series is still showing good growth. As is 9600 series for Nvidia.

XP(total) down from 47.97% to 45.41% though XP64 gained some. Vista64 also gained some market share 0.8 and another whopping 2.45% for 7-64.
For some inexplicable reason, the 8800's gained 1.11% after previous MoM losses (0.42% loss last month) meaning it still edges out the HD4800 which gained 1.32%
Cypress enters the charts with 0.55%

Whats strange to me is the fact that Juniper only netted the same increase and a lower total overall than Cypress. I thought the numbers at that end favoured the mainstream parts? Or are we seeing an early adopter enthusiast effect whereby people favour the higher end of a new generation of parts initially?
I was wondering about the 8800 series gains as well, could it be due to a bunch of OEM machines carrying these parts in prebuilt 'gamer' systems? Or could it be due to clearance of the hardware?

Thats a lot of effect!
One thing which gets me is that there are a few % more systems with 64 bit Windows than systems with 4GB of ram or more. Do we call this the casual effect?

4 CPU adoption is accelerating. I'm wondering if this could in part be attributed to AMD releasing sub 100 USD quad cores thus moving it into the more budget/mainstream arena.
Although it's hard to say since AMD continues to lose marketshare to Intel. But, good news for AMD is that each month the loss of share to Intel is shrinking. So they aren't bleeding share nearly as fast as they were.
Very nice to see Win7 x64 share gains increasing significantly faster than x32. +2.45% versus +0.02%. Perhaps the next Windows OS will be able to ditch 32 bit entirely if this trend continues.
A bit sad to see 5870 and 5850 grouped into "5800 series" similar to the "4800 series." And apparently doing the same now for the "5700" series.
Also there's no breakdown of Dx11 cards yet, so can't see a breakdown of Dx11 cards like you do with Dx10 and Dx9. And thus 5800 and 5700 series is only found in All Video cards. And in Dx10 + Vista systems.
Although, it'd be funny to see a Dx11 breakdown, as there'd only be ATI cards there.
