New PS3 details (launch, online)

Next Generation can reveal that Sony is planning to launch an online games service, largely modelled on Xbox Live, currently called PlayStation HUB. We also understand Sony is aiming for a September launch for PlayStation 3 in Japan and North America.

PlayStation HUB is being described to developers as a 'subscriber service' suggesting a monthly charge. We understand the service is being created by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, although this is unconfirmed.

16 september?

it's a long long time, and there're no more official news around, they are silent and absent from months

Well, I really have not seen anything more solid than that.

Would obviously mean that Sony missed their "spring" launch though it was looking more and more like it with every passing day.

For the US, Sept. would be nice. Earlier than I expected and maybe will allow Sony to have more units available for the holiday season.

Personally, I would almost prefer an autumn - christmas 2006 launch here in EU, than this spring.
My PS2 still has a lot of games coming that occupy my time well into autumn, would PS3 launch now spring, I'll likely miss those games in favor of new PS3 games.
Additionally, it encourages me to postpone buying a new display yet, and wait and see especially if there will be affordable 1080p front projectors towards the end of year.

I don't think you have to worry about a spring 06 launch in Europe. ;)

Hey, just read from one finnish site that there will be a free-for-all event in London where George Bain of SCEE tells about developing games for PS3 and an overview of Cell, RSX and Blu-ray.

It's held at some "O'Neill's Irish Pub" at London's King's Cross. 21st February, at 19:00

There should be some aditional info on IGDA pages http://www.igda.org/, though I could not find any.

Anyone around London willing to check it?

    PS3 event in a pub?! TYPICAL!

I thought the UK events were usually in pubs. I think I've been there, but can't make Tuesday to eavesdrop. LB is obviously appointed our agent in the field, only for security purposes between now and your report after the event we'd better refer to you by codename. Perhaps...Shanghai-Boy? Scunthorpe-Boy?

September in the US sounds good for 06 in Europe.

I guess Sony can afford to wait in Japan, it's not like anyone's really snapping at their heels. Nintendo won't launch much before then if at all.

It'd give global launch software development more time too, which would be a good thing I guess (i.e. Japanese devs wouldn't be rushing to meet an earlier launch).

Assuming this is all true, of course..

.

Yeah, people were urging Sony to release early because "This time around they have competition out before them!" but in Japan it really seems they will have free reign once again. Until Rev launches, but we don't know how much of an impact that will make. I think it might have a DS kind of impact just based on the innovative control design thing.

Oh no, do not send bonbon-boy there!
He'll be too busy hitting on those hot developers and miss all the information.

oh, hang on a minute, im straight. sorry got carried away there !

And to think there was such an uproar from Sony fans last year when I stated that Sony would eventually copy Live and that the PS3 would never be ready before Fall 2006. :)

sept is not spring

Not in these parts, no ;)

It's worth remembering though that they had no confirmation of that, and the source for "September" didn't indicate regions. But even if PS3 were to hit Japan in Sept also, the most we can say is that it sucks for Japanese gamers.

who is still holding onto that launch window anyhow? Over a year ago, September 06 sounded great to me, and it still does now...come spring 06, i was prepared for disappointment since E3.
