New OXM Rumor: Nintendo Xbox 2

Is the end near?

Well, got the new OXM today and there is a long rumor stating what people have been saying for a while now...Nintendo is designing the architecture in Xbox 2 and Nintendo is bailing out of the console race. The G5 Power PC development kits are already circulated around to the main developers.

This is the first time I've actually seen it be printed in a magazine, so who knows...

Connect this to the early screenshot of xenon sdk showing "dolphin.exe". Nintendo Xbox 2 backwards compatible with GC!!! ;)

Ok then lets say the rumor is true :D What benefit does Nintendo have from cooperating with MS? MS gets a big foot into the japanese market, so from their pov it makes sense. Nintendo might get a 3rd party title here and there but thats all. Also who has the say on things then? MS or N? Mario etc. on XBOX2? I don't think so. Their 1st party titles are sacred to them!

I'm pretty sure XBOX2/Nintendo would greatly outsell the PS3, they'd cover all audiences with excellent titles. But it's just too complicated and unlikely to be true. Also where would the Revolution fit in?

I think it would be wise for them to team up. They both have good philosophies, each better in different ways.

It's a lot of money, too. A Nintendo/MS XCube would have a huge backing, with a plethora of games at launch.

Too bad it probably won't happen, even with Yamauchi out of the picture.

It's just a feeling. Anyway i read some interesting theories in that thread: what if MS/N make N5/XBOX2 compatible? The gpu/cpu would be the same. N5 would be the cost optimized pure gaming machine version, and XBOX2 would have all the bells and whistles (dvd, online and whatnot). Like Panasonic Q compared to GC. I have not given it much thought yet but it's an interesting theory. Just that the Revolution doesn't fit into this at all. And Nintendo are to proud and stubborn for such a thing anyway.

It makes sense. This would explain the shift ftrom x86 to PPC. Besides, MS and Nintendo appeal to a very different demographics, so a common platform would expand the target audience. I wonder how the royalties will be split. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo gets 70% of the royalties, MS can afford to take a loss if it means stopping Sony.

I wonder what they'd have to say about that rumor now that Nintendo had their say on the E3, where they were pretty damn clear that they'll keep going on their own.

why wouldn't it ?

xbox is what about 20 million ?

gamecube is about the same ?

Thats 40 million units

That is not bad .

Ms gets nintendos fan base

Nintendo gets to reduce the spending on console development

I've been saying this is the best thing for a long time.

Hell i'd even like to see nintendo buy sega .

I really wish we could have 3 strong players in the market but thats just not happening

A ms/ nintendo team up willl at make the market 2 players . 1 very strong the other pretty strong. Close enough i guess.

MS and Nintendo *should* team up, I've long been a proponent of such a scenario.

Lots of mature games for us Nintendoids and we still get to keep our trademark Mario, Zelda, F-Zero and Metroid titles, and MS can benefit both from Nintendo's library of franchises and expertise of joypad design.

MS + partners do the hardware, Nintendo does the human/machine interface (AKA controller), since MS just rips off Nintendo's designs anyway. Also, a Nintendo-branded Nextbox wouldn't be as big as a FRIGGIN HOUSE!

Perfect combination!

That's why it'll never happen, coz we live in an imperfect world. :(

JVD! Paragraphs! Please! I beg of you! :? :?:

At least the console sales part can be addressed: As I remember, NPD's end-of-year totals for the GameCube and Xbox put them both at around 14 million shipped. Since then, I think the Xbox has sold about 900k-1mil and GameCube around 600k. (I'd have to root around for numbers...) No idea what kind of stock might have existed at year's end to get a better idea of overall sales now. In an overall shrinking industry, though I think the recent price drops and quality of 2004's titles in comparison to 2003's will kick things up a notch this year. (Or at least keep it from sinking further.)

At any rate, it would take an awful lot of things lining up to convince me that Nintendo is now or would ever pursue such a route. IMHO, they'll pursue their own endeavors--even if it's to their detriment--until near-death before they would drop out or "shack up with the enemy." So far it seems they're placing heavy bets on playing a different game this time than the others, hoping to strike new ground and cover more territory, rather than follow Sony and Microsoft's breakneck pace in one their primary direction.

They are both at 14 million worldwide. 14 + 14 = 28 millions consoles combined.

That was at the end of 2003--there have certainly been sales since then. (Though I'm not positive of the exact numbers, I think my approximates are close. It could be figured out after finding a few reports.) I think not quite at 30 million total, but close.

Yes but both were launched more than a year later than PS2, therefore the notion that a Xenon/N5 hybrid could outsell PS3 is not too farfetched.
