New metaballs demo

Nah i'm 100% stable. Just reformatted, it didn't reboot this this time, but it ran for 1 second then it froze, either that or it's running at incredible low FPS

Well, just because it's stable otherwise doesn't mean it will neccesarily be stable in this demo.

Anyway, it's interesting to see that your 3DNow! version is slower than the SSE version. Any possibility that your SSE version isn't fully optimized?

You mean that the SSE version is slower, right? Well, that's because SSE lacks horizontal adds, so you have to shuffle to do a simple dot product. That's the biggest shortcoming of SSE, which makes it much less useful for 3D tasks than it would otherwise be. It's been added in SSE3 though, but my CPU doesn't support that. It's possible an SSE3 version could be as fast as 3DNow or maybe faster.

3.4 GHz P4 Northwood (800 FSB)
9800 Pro (CAT 4.12)
SSE: 124 - 134 fps
FPU: 95 fps

A64 FX-53
X800 XT PE (CAT 4.12)
3DNow: 134 fps
SSE: 116 fps
FPU: 84 fps

This just looks incredible! Good job, Humus!

P4 3.0Ghz P4 Northwood (800FSB) at 3.7ghz (988FSB, ram at 1:1)
X800Pro Vivo (unlocked) at 555/1166 on Cat 4.10's
SSE: 148-158 FPS
FPU: 108 FPS

Fun to play with :)

i get on my dell inspiron xps with mobile ati 9800 graphcs card and 3.4 ghz Pentium 4, 134 fps with sse and 87 fps with fpu

All I get is a flickering, and slightly blurry, screen with the desktop still visible.

WinXP
Driver Ver:66.93
XP2500 @2Ghz
6800GT @413Mhz\1013Mhz
1Gb Ram

I just downloaded it and ran it.

The first time my mouse quit, and a moment later I had a BSOD flash up and then an immediate reboot.

After reboot I was darying and tried it again. It worked (although I thought I had crashed again as my PC paused a second again...).

system:
Dell 8300
Northwood 3GHz
1GB RAM
Geforce 6800 GT

It seems to run in software by me... The PC stalls and only by pressing ESC a lot I can quit(the mouse doesn't response).
Athlon3000+ on ASUS A8N-SLI with 6600GT

Same with your other demos(like DOF or raytraced shadows). Older demos run fine.

Resizing the window seems to fix this, Zengar. But yes, it does appear to be a problem that one frame is rendered, then no others until the window is resized.

Neat :) - Works A-OK here.

Celeron-D @2.6ghz
X700pro @stock
FPU: 72FPS
SSE: 115FPS

Celeron-D @4.0ghz
X700pro @stock
FPU:102FPS
SSE: 152FPS

Nice demo! Went good with meatballs I ate right before I ran it ;).

No problems on my system (Athlon XP [TBred-B] @1.75GHz, FIC AD11 rev. 1.2 [AMD760+VIA686B] @280MHz, 9800PRO 128MB @398/743MHz, Win XP Pro SP2). I haven't tried it in windowed mode though.

What driver are you using?

I get the problem in the 66.93 drivers, too. I'm pretty sure it's the one Zengar described, but is, at least, the one I described.

Its a nice demo although I have one question for you Humus. Metaballs is not a new concept and has been out for years. I have seen metaballs in demos that run with nVidia TNT1 hardware with OpenGL/DirectX API yet your metaball demo needs DX9.0 hardware to run (ie GF FX5200 or 9500 and up). Surely it doesnt need the latest video card to run it?

Metabals are mathematical concept and do not rely to 3d card at all. This demo is using OpenGL Shading Language for reflections, hence the need of a recent graphics card :)
