New Computer Specs

No on-board video on that MB...cheap PCI-E will run you at LEAST $40 ;)

What??? Mutha fooker......

Fine. :devilish:

Video Card: AMD HD 2400 Pro $49

Happy? :p

I'm about to go with the same CPU/MB and I'd recommend checking the Gigabyte site for supported memory...

Those are only the ones they've tested. I'm not particularly worried that there will be a problem with a major brand.

Updated:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 ($283)
Memory: 4GB DDR2-800 (2x2GB or 4x1GB) (any brand/model suggestions? GigaByte board seems to do fine with 2x2 or 4x1 configurations according to reviews)
Motherboard: GigaByte GA-P35-DQ6 $228
Cooling: Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme $65
CPU Paste: Arctic Ceramique $5
Video Card: AMD HD 2400 Pro $49 (damn you Mize!)
OS: Windows XP SP2
Hard Drives: Hitachi T7K500 (3x500GB) $360
Case: Cooler Master Stacker 832 $240
Monitor: BenQ FP241WZ $730
Power Supply: Silverstone ST85F $180 + $20 mail-in rebate = same price as ST75F $160
CD/DVD Burner: Lite-On LH-20A1L-06 $40

Anything I'm missing other than memory? Any suggestions for memory?

Eh...I've had "issues" with various memory (usually Corsair or OCZ) and MBs from Abit, MSI and DFI...ultimately got them working but a few exchanges with both Corsair and OCZ to do it. Of course I was OC'ing the hell out of the MBs, but the memory was rated at the speeds so they both were great about swapping for better modules...

Sounds good, as long as you're fine with that massive case. :D

I'd get a Antec P180B :devilish:

After trying my luck with this godforsaken midtower case, I'm going full roomy again. I used to buy massive cases and moved away from that unfortunately. Never again!!

The bigger the better. :)

You forgot the keyboard and mouse! :O
Oh yeah - DVD-R/CD!

Great system. Mine will be very similar but all going in the current Lian Li silent case with my H2O system and existing HDs. I'll go 2x2 to save the slots for more bloatware down the line. You know there is a Gigabyte P35 that accept either DDR2 or DDR3, right?

Patriot RAM does seem to do very well for the price.

Memory Candidates
: 2GB DDR2-800 (2x1GB only) - 32bit Windows XP can only address 4GB, of which some will be wiped away for hardware requirements. That will leave anywhere from 3GB-3.5GB of usable physical memory, which would basically be a waste of money by getting 4GB.

Patriot 2x1GB DDR2-800 $119 + $45 mail-in rebate: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220144

Any others? I'm heading home now. Will put through the orders tonight. Cya in an hour or so.

See last post on the 4GB memory thing. Just found out.

The GigaByte board you're thinking of is the P35C-DS3R. It's a budget board however. Not as good as the DQ6 by any stretch.

Who said anything about buying it Nate? :|

The only differences I see 'tween the memory is the Corsair is 2.1v and the Patriot is 2.2v, I'd go for the Patriot just out of my own personal preference. :p

BRiT, that's one sweet rig. Any clue as to whether I can passively (Reserator 2) cool a Q6600, GTX and NB to adequate (not extreme OC) temps?

Mize, Thanks. It was a bit of a hassle to build. I had to RMA/return a flaky motherboard (DFI P965 Dark). I replaced it with the Abit. That motherboard killed one of my dimms, so I had to do the RMA dance there.

I don't know the thermal capacity of the Reservator 2. The suggested guideline I've seen on XS is to figure 200 watts for the Q6600 and 180 watts for the 8800 GTX.

In a review, I saw the 8800GTX measured a draw of (produces/throws off) 170-180 watts (Nvidia specs at a conservative 200 watts). The Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz w/ 1.25 Vcore produces 105 watts (Intel specs at a conservative 120 watts). According to this eXtreme PSU Calculator, overclocked to 3.0Ghz w/ 1.4 Vcore produces 165 watts, 3.3Ghz w/ 1.425 Vcore = 188 watts. The Q6600 starts to really produce the heat once you hit 1.5 Vcore. If you get a newer stepping, G0, of the Q6600/X3220 the thermal envelope is supposed to have been dropped by 20 watts.

Natoma, depending on how much you want to spend on memory, check out the Mushkin XP2-8500, XP2-6400, or HP2-6400 sets. The former XP2 series are in high demand and limited supply, so they might be a bit difficult to find. If you shop at the Mushkin online store, the coupon code of "xtremesystems.com" provides for 10% discount, bringing the 2x2Gig HP2-6400 set to $275 for 4Gig.

Sweet!! Thanks Brit!

So Q6600 G0 stepping, 2x2GB 6400 and say an 8800GTX...can my OCZ PowerStream OCZ520ADJSLI EPS12V 520W Power Supply handle it? It currently handles the X1800XT-PE/4400+ x2 just fine...
