Neglected genres

This is just a quick survey type thread. Anyone here feel that a certain genre in games has been neglected on the current crop of consoles? And of those genres, how would you improve them with today's consoles and how would you take advantage of the power of these consoles?

Ooh nice topic! :)

Strategy games have vanished on consoles, as well as horizontal/verticle scrollers (both paltforms and shooters). For a strategy game i've come up with a idea for something really interesting, it mixes both action, platforming, and strategy rolled into one game, but the chances of anything happening with it are very slim. It would certianly something different.

...still waiting for a damn follow-up to Colony Wars on PS2! Where are the great space operas? :!:

...also a return to addictive arcade melee action like Star Control! I made a topic about this a while ago (except with a ST:NG theme), but no one seemed to "get it".

...and can we have Aliens vs. Predators on PS2 already??? Geez! :)

Not a genre but I'd like to see more 2d games on the regular consoles (not just GBA). 2d is awesome and most developers can't make a proper 3d game anyway.

i think that a game a la supermariokart is lacking now.. at least on GC.

perhaps adventure games like "monkey island", or games like "it came from the desert" would do much good on consoles.

Puzzle games are gone, too. PuyoPuyoSun, Pop'n'Pop, Pastel Muses, Gussun&Oyoyoz, Tetris-Clones, Mr. Driller, Star Sweeper, TwinBee Taisen Puzzle Dama ... to name a few.

I think that co-op games in general have been pretty scarce lately. Other than Hunter: The Reckoning, Halo, and Baldur's Gate: DA, there haven't been many co-op games.

Remember Guardian Heroes? That was a pretty cool co-op game. I'd like to see more stuff like that, but with maybe a little more RPG in the mix and more persistence.

One thing I'm sick of - elemental powerups. Every freaking RPG, platform, and adventure game is based around the same tired old - earth, fire, wind, cold, blah, blah, blah concept. That's one of the cool things about Hunter: The Reckoning, as it doesn't conform to this tired standard.

Animal spirits could be a cool paradigm and I'm sure there are plenty of others. Maybe signs of the Zodiac or real chemical elements of the periodic table - some sort of molecular construction powerups or something where you can manipulate more complex atoms as you go. Just a few thoughts.

I think an 8-player online super-hero game could be pretty cool. Everyone creates their own superhero to form a supergroup and then the game could generate Diablo-like quests and scenarios to be defeated. New quests could be introduced sort of like issues a comic book and downloadable for a couple of bucks or something.

I think online should go more in the direction of groups of 8-16 players, rather than the massively-multiplayer route. I think this would provide for a tighter experience.

Heh, for once I have to fully agree with you Johnny. Co-op is excellent, and rather neglected. It was Halo's redeeming feature in Story Mode, IMO.. without co-op the game would have gotten lower marks.

I can't wait to see what Nintendo has in store with Pikmin 2.. which is supposed to be co-op (or competitive) on some level. I love how Nintendo mixed the Adventure genre seamlessly with the Strategy genre with Pikmin. That's one great way to put the Strategy genre on consoles where the keyboard isn't quite mainstream yet. *winks at Quincy*

Co-op games and STRATEGY games!!!

Other than Ring of Red, there hasn't been a decent grid-strategy game released since... FF:Tactics?

*prays to the Super Robot Wars gods* (best strategy franchise evAR)

Er, I meant to pray to the SRW gods so that Banepresto might finally decide to localize a Super Robot Wars game for North America. I played through a translated 3 on emu and absolutely fell in love. I've tried others, but feel I'm missing like 80% of it due to language barriers.

Sigh, SRW: Impact looks so sweet too :(

Quincy: Why? Well, you think Strategy is neglected on consoles.. and I want to see more "watered down" or "hybrid Action/Adventure" Strategy games (like Pikmin) on the consoles.. since I liked the aforementioned Nintendo romp so much. :)

Add Timesplitters 2 to that list. Oh and Contra. But I agree more coop would be nice.

ah ok I see what you mean. however I don't really think one trategy game will halep the entire genre form being neglected. I'm hoping for more games in that area in general.
