Naughty Dog's New IP (Pics)

I can't understand why, but something just looks very wrong about this game to the point that I think it has bad graphics  :?:

It's probably the main characters look. Some people hate it and some love it. I love it because I'm personally sick and tired of super steroid taking, bald headed, muscle bound guys in next gen games.

Give me more normal characters.

I'm with you on this. I can't quite explain it, bu the screens just look... wrong to me. I suppose it is technically impressive, but I'm totally turned off. That said, looking at their work on PS2, I'll try to remain optimistic...

I personally like the main character alot, finally we get a "normal" guy in games. His style makes him feel that much more human to me. Not sure If that made any sense, but its pretty much what mckmas8808 said. We either have huge guys with gigantic guns, or skinny guys who can perform the most crazy acrobatics in fights. Not saying those guys are truly bad, but I'd say its about time we get a change.

No its not as much that (I have no problems with gay looking / feminine looking guys...heck I'm probably considered one myself ... NO FLAMES :devilish: ). I think it may be the lighting but I'mn not sure... really I just don't know, only I'm sure its not the main character.

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the name of this game turns out to be Pitfall. It has it written all over it.
that was initial reaction as well
a pity if true since its a game ive always loathed, looked a bit more graphically from a technical viewpoint this and mgs are the 2 standouts of e3

I just thought of something as I watched the trailer again... He seems overexaggerated in his facial expressions and some of his movements... sort of feels like he should be in a Coen Brothers (Joel/Ethan) movie or something (maybe some of you will understand what I mean, hard to explain if you don't).

I personally really like how it looks. Kind of excited, not only because its Naughty Dog, but because it looks interesting based on what I've seen alone.

Laa-Yosh given what we seen in this video, do you think there's any chance (some small percentage) that the game 8 Days could be real-time? And if it wasn't at E3 could it look like that when released in your opinion?

8 days is CG, that's sure. I dunno, there's a lot of very cool stuff released nowadays; what I'm sure though is that you should expect the usual aliasing, blurry texture filtering, poly edges, and so on that's typical of hardware rendered images.

Its odd but his facial expressions kinda reminded me of their excellent work on Daxter of all things. Maybe its the slightly exaggerated eye brow motions or something. :) I like it too. Its got a subtle cartoony vibe to the whole thing. Pitfall meets Far Cry?

IGN: The art style is actually pretty cool. It's definitely unique. What can you tell us about its origin and your decision for going after this kind of style?

Wells: It was a very conscious decision to head in this particular direction. Looking at the landscape of next-generation games being developed it was clear that there were a gluttony of titles that featured bald, buff space marines wearing body armor and fighting aliens.

IGN: How close will the actual gameplay be to what was shown in the trailer?

Wells:
This trailer is really just the tip of the iceberg as far as what you can expect from the gameplay in the final product. Animation has been a huge focus for us in terms of where we've been spending our development resources and is really something that we think will set next-generation games apart from current-gen. Bringing a realistic human character to life in a believable way, but still maintaining the controllability has been our emphasis.

IGN: There are some really cool moves shown in the trailer, especially the fight moves. The scene where the lead character smacks that guy against the wall; is that possible in the real game?

Wells: As I mentioned, fighting and brawling are important aspects of the gameplay and our animation system allows us to take it to the next level on the PS3 -- but we also want to give a very cinematic presentation to the action. This means a heavily-scripted camera that highlights key moments of gameplay. We've actually hired the designer behind the camera of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time to head up our camera efforts

Looks like animation will be focused on alot in this game. I love it. It's kinda messed up how he dissed UE 3.0 games though.

"Dissed" UE3 games? I didn't see anything like that. All he said about UE3 was that they were not using it, and using something in-house instead. The only other game that Wells himself mentioned, AFAICS, was Prince of Persia and that was about hiring a guy from that team.

Nonetheless, I think this is a good counterexample to all the ballyhoo over Indiana Jones and Euphoria. When I saw the Indy videos, all I saw was ragdoll getting interpolated down to an "ideal death position" which for some odd reason appeared to be a fetal position. This is more an example of how powerful *good* animation work is.

I think hes talking about this bit...

ofcourse not specifically ue3.0, but just in general the mass of games lately seems to be taking that theme.

The animation is what will set last gen and next gen apart more than anything.
