Musk bought Twitter, what hasn't gone wrong?

Seems like the classic evil rich guy move, doesn't it?

Seems like the classic evil rich guy move, doesn't it?

I don't understand how a guy that's built his entire post-pay-pall entrepreneurial carreer on top of snake-oil-salesmanship can be so dead set on running his reputation to the ground more than it already was.

Is he relying on the fact that whats terrible optics for us mortals may actually seem like smart no-nonsense business to his typical billionaire investors? Total kamikaze strat if thats the case.

So now Musk is taking legal actions against an account he previously said would remain around because of "free speech".

Elon Musk taking legal action over Twitter account that tracks his private jet

Elon Musk says he is taking legal action against the holder of a Twitter account that tracks his private jet, arguing it put his son at risk.

The @ElonJet account, which has more than half a million followers, was suspended on Wednesday.

Its owner Jack Sweeney, 20, used publicly available flight-tracking information to tweet every time Mr Musk's jet took off and landed.

Mr Musk says legal action is now being taken against Mr Sweeney and others.

"Last night, car carrying [his son] lil X in LA was followed by crazy stalker (thinking it was me), who later blocked car from moving and climbed onto hood," he tweeted.

He added that any account revealing people's real-time locations will be suspended "as it is a physical safety violation".

Mr Sweeney denied the incident was related to his account when asked by the BBC.

It comes after he confirmed on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday that the profile had been suspended.

That evening, Mr Sweeney's account appeared to have been reactivated. He tweeted: "Yes I am back!" Minutes later it was listed again as suspended. His personal account, @JxckSweeney, has also been frozen.

Mr Sweeney, a college student in the state of Florida, shared a screenshot with CNN of a message from Twitter saying the social media company had conducted a "careful review" and had decided to permanently ban the account for violating Twitter's rules.

The student is in charge of dozens of other accounts that track the private flights of wealthy Americans, including Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg.

Many of those accounts - including one tracking aircraft associated with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and another monitoring celebrity jets - appeared to be suspended on Twitter as well on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Musk had long taken issue with the @ElonJet account, and once reportedly offered Mr Sweeney $5,000 to delete it.

Mr Sweeney told US media outlets that Mr Musk ultimately told him it did not feel right to pay to have the account shut down.

And a month ago, Mr Musk pledged to keep it running even though it was a "direct personal safety risk".

But Mr Musk tweeted on Wednesday evening: "Any account doxxing real-time location info of anyone will be suspended, as it is a physical safety violation. This includes posting links to sites with real-time location info."

Twitter's Help Center has tweeted an updated media policy that begins: "You may not publish or post other people's private information without their express authorization and permission."

Since taking the helm at Twitter, Mr Musk has made a host of changes to its moderation practices.

He has restored a handful of previously banned accounts, including former President Donald Trump's profile, which was banned following the 6 January insurrection at the US Capitol.

The Tesla CEO has also slashed the social media company's staff and has reportedly stopped paying rent for some of Twitter's offices, including the company's San Francisco headquarters, according to the New York Times.

Well it's his company now, I guess he can do whatever he wants as long as it's not illegal.

But one of the journalists who was suspended, Drew Harwell of The Washington Post, told Musk, “You are suggesting that we’re sharing your address, which is not true.” He said that they posted a link to @ElonJet, the account that had used publicly available data to report on movement of Musk’s private aircraft. He noted that the @ElonJet account is now banned on Twitter.

“We have to acknowledge you are using the same exact link-blocking technique that you have criticized as part of the Hunter Biden-New York Post story in 2020,” Harwell said.

...

Journalist Aaron Rupar, who got a note that his account was permanently suspended, wrote in a Substack post that he had “no idea what rules I purportedly broke.” He said that he published a newsletter on Wednesday featuring an article about Musk’s “reactionary populism” and also tweeted that Musk himself “seemed to violate Twitter’s policy against posting footage of someone without their consent.”

...

Musk tweeted out a poll asking users when he should unsuspend the accounts. When the respond “Now” was the top choice, Musk then wrote, “Sorry too many options. Will redo poll.”

Twitter suspends Mastodon’s account and bans links to Mastodon servers

Update: As of 6:30 PM PT, many links to Mastodon no longer work on Twitter, which flags them as “potentially harmful.” Tweeted links to some servers without Mastodon’s name in the domain still appeared to work in our testing. Banned domains include mstdn.social and mastodon.social, while links to journa.host and others still work.

That is at least something which makes sense from the business side of things for twitter. Don't want to be promoting a rival which might eat your lunch.

Possibly the first thing that a Musk-led twitter has done which actually makes business sense!

This whole situation is bat shit crazy but I also think he's an incredibly dangerous individual. At this point I think he could quite easily take over Trumps mantle of "champion of the right" and given the sheer denseness of the US right, I think he could probably make a successful bid for the presidency.

EDIT: Oh he's Canadian. Thank God. The Canadians are no-where near stupid enough to vote him into power.

Censoring the existence of rivals on your platform is sign of extreme insecurity and makes no business sense. Can you imagine if Google blocked all references to other search engines, online apps and every every other company who offered competing products? Or if Microsoft did it? Or Apple?

It's a path to self isolation in a connected world. What's the next move, suspending all other car manufacturers because they compete with Tesla? Where does the madness end as Musk becomes increasingly more unravelled as the days pass.
