Multi-Laser : Supports Red And Blu-Ray Lasers

SONY ANNOUNCED yesterday that it has developed a three-wavelength optical head, which is able to record and play back discs in three formats: the standards DVD and CD formats, as well as the all new Blu-ray discs.
Not only will this development be more useful to users – as backwards compatibility almost certainly is – it will also reduce the amount of parts required to produce optical heads, which are important parts of any DVD or CD players.

Sony is hoping to promote the use of its Blu-ray system, despite competition from an alternative format. Its product should be commercially available within two years.

Wow,talk about moving fast.

Good step forward, many people are not so excited about Blue Ray drives since they are incompatible with DVDs/CDs. A major hurdle has been removed. Maybe now PC engine will say a few +ve things about BR. ;)

HD-DVD prototype already uses a single cheap plastic lense. ;)

It's a good step for Blu-ray yes.

Nice, BR in PS3 seems to be even more likely now. It is all to be seen if BR can take off like DVD did around 5 years ago...

I know for sure that 99% of the people who already (sometimes reluctantly) upgraded from VHS to DVD, and re-buying all their VHS collection on DVD, would be pissed off if the "new format" were not to be compatible with the old one.

;) Well, whatever the "new format" is.

Is it all set in stone? I mean, the "new format" hasn't been decided yet, and it seems Sony (and all involved) are going to push BR pretty damn hard. Also let's remember that there probably be loads more PS3 around than any other "next format player", making BR quite widespread given the time. Like it happened with PS2 and DVD. It's safe to say that DVD sales picked up right when PS2 was released. Also, helped by movies like The Matrix and a few others, DVD became "the thing to have" from being the "oooooh neat, movies on a disc!" thing.

Well you don't know that for sure lb .

First it has to make it into the ps3 .

Which i'm still not sure is happening. I still believe its to expensive.

But then you have to look at it this way. The xbox 2 will most likely have hd-dvd.

All pcs above an athlon xp 1800+ and p4 1800mhz with a dvd drive can use hd-dvd . I have the terminator 2 version. Looks so sweet on my plasma .

But anyway.

I think its going to come down to who charges more .

Sony or the dvd forum .

Personaly in a few months i will have a blueray player (perk of a friend working at sony and getting all of the b rated electronics at 75% off )

no of course i don't,.

Personally, i have no doubts. it's either that or another of Sony's "proprietary formats" like UMD is. And yeah i know it's Sony and i wouldn't be surprised if they did that, but come on it will be ridiculous to see Sony come out with yet another format while also pushing BR and UMD and god knows what else at the same time. ;)

huh? r we talking about the same HD-DVD? Cause i sure as hell don't think the HD sperminator2 DVD is a "new format". It's just a normal DVD with different codecs used. right............ Or else, the DVD drive on my PC wouldn't be able to read it. What i was talking about was that AOD or whatever PCEngine keeps bitching about all the time....
But anyway.

I think its going to come down to who charges more .

Definately, and who can get the most units out there. PS3 or the others? PS2 is still the best selling DVD player out there, by a long margin.

Sony or the dvd forum .

I thought Sony was part of the DVD forum, or how else would they have pushed DVD like they did.

i hate u i hate i hate u. What r u gonna play on it anyway? ;)

Porn , lots and lots of porn. I have over a tera byte of porn on cds and dvdrs .

A terabyte?! Jesus and i thought Natoma had a lot............... How did u get that much porn? how can u not get tired of it? i mean that's WEEKS worth of porn. weeks of non-stop-24-hours-a-day porn. that's way over what i can handle.

HD-DVD doesn't mean you're forced to use the blue laser. ;)

It'll be very flexible. For example a studio can release films using VC9 which was what T2ED used using red lasers. Or they can use the full blown blue laser and media to put more stuff on the disc. Xbox 2 can be made to be compatible with just the red laser HD-DVD format.

But it also means Xbox2 will have much less storage room than PS3, if PS3 has blueray. And it's quite a big difference.

In the end, most of that will be sucked for FMVs, but what if it isn't.

Xbox2 can't possibly be stuck with an old format like DVD while its main competitor is a whole new generation ahead. (again, IF PS3 has BR)

Peronally I think IF PS3 uses BR then Xenon would use blue laser HD-DVD drives just so that it can compete in capacity. I don't think future games would use that much more FMV or game data. Most game DVDs today fill up the disc with dummy data anyway.

See there u go, in the end there will be 2 blue laser drives out on the market. ;) The point i was trying to make.

If Sony puts Bluray in PS3, then that's it!. The DVD forum can enter all the affiliations they want, and have all the hardware manufactures on their side. If Sony puts a Bluray drive in PS3, it will be the dominant new format. I suspect Sony is going Blueray, just for that reason, even if they lose a lot of money in the beginning.

Besides, Bluray is the superior format, so whats to worry about? :p

I doubt BR will become the dominant format just because it's in PS3. After all PS3 will launch later than Xenon. ;)

Also the red laser version of HD-DVD can be implemented in existing DVD players/recorders with a simple chip. Not only that, dual layer burners/recorders will hit the market very soon and cheap too. Imagine being able to record on a dual layer DVD using VC9 level encoding. :devilish:

In the end isn't that the same as saying "imagine recording HDTV on Blueray and have room to spare too!"...

In the end, BR is the superior format, whether u like it or not. No amount of codecs will overcome the fact that it's an old format competing with a much more accommodating format.

You're not getting the point and no it's not the same thing. Unless you can get a BR recorder soon for $400. ;)

A format becomes popular because of movies. Also will PS3 be able to record?
