Anyway, this confirms my prediction. When Sony was talking about mass production in the second half of 2005, they were talking about good yields. Risk production begins way sooner and is at a speed of 15000 wafers per month(at each fab???)

Read again:

Pilot production at each fabrication facility is expected to start in the first half of the fiscal year 2005, with planned production capacity of 15000 wafers/month in total.

This confirms nothing. If people are thinking worldwide 2005, dont.

I see you've backpeddled successfully and acknowledged an likely 2005 release then?

I see Xbox lauch in at least 2 regions by year end 2005,, enought to put a damper on an late 2005 (llikely japan) PS3 launch. This launch window is pretty Crucial, ppls won't wait around that long if there no exisitng momentum left in PS2 by then.

backpeddled? like when? It always be 2006. "possible" 2005 NTSC/J is like when Xbox2 is really threatening and the "stop-gap" known as PSP ain doing as well as Sony hope. OF coz that be really a rush job PS3. That be what i always say.

MayB you dont belief, BUT it be known earlier the results of Cell will kick start in 2006 planned.

for the record this I can agree on

If Sony can't have solid tech ready (hardware and software, I mean) they shouldn't rush into the release. I don't think anyone of their market base is going to jump the ship to N5 or Xbox 2 just because PS3 is not available the very same day, especially if they know the PS3 is around the corner bigger and badder than ever (and as we have all seen with the Dreamcast, Sony will make sure everybody knows that) If Nintendo and MS go for the end of 2005, they will have a solid one year window to release without much if any impact to their sales. Having said that, I very much doubt MS and Nin would be cutting their consoles' lives that short. Four years seems to be way too small lifetime judging by many people's opinions around forums. Actually, by pushing the release to end of 2005 Sony could potentially damage N and M's reputation, as it would force them to cut their consoles' lives short. Sony is the only one right now that could fair and square go for the 2005 release without anyone complaining, and they are the only one who can without damage wait for the 2006 release. They are in the extremely good position regarding this, and MS and Nintendo better put a lot of thought to what they will be doing regarding the release date.

X-Box 2 doesn't have to be #1 in sales. The current X-Box is not making MS any money, I think they'll will be happy just turning a profit at all. So they can launch a system in 2005 that's less expensive to manufacture and promote, and woo customers with newer technology and the X-Box brand. Yes, many will just wait for PS3, but all they need is enough customers to reach "critical mass" and make the thing profitable.

So good as they are now, Sony cannot be comfy with late launches OR at least longer delays. Nintendo fuBAREd the N64 part of because they felt, bleh! PLAYSTATION? Our SNES can keep it at bay for now! HAR HAR!

AS i said, consoles at launch are always cool, it be more important how to keep the momentum going. Sega didnt, for many reasons, but me sure MS can do better with a clear path this time. IIRC from some gahiggdy charts i saw, the initial takeup rate of DC is good, just Sega failed to keep up the steaming.

IIRC Sony were also concern during the early GC/Xbox days, just things didnt panned out well for the rivals with PS2 gaining too much of a snowball lead.

What i be saying is, SURE Sony is running away now, but next gen is always danger time for everyone. NEVER be over confident by the stranglehold Sony has today. No one is going to be comfy and wait for show hands by rivals. Im sure Sony is concern, oh yeay they are. Everyone too.

Sony fans shouldnt be quick to dimiss the others' position. :)

yes, deja vu isn't it?

nope they had the titles and the steam, but were crushed not because they launched early, but but the refusal for the PS1 to die queitly thereby muting what DC offfered and paving the way for PS2. Oh and the Hype machine too.

they didn't 'pan' out well because PS2 crushed them with it's massive library of titles (and not all of them shite either).

Sony overconfident? that's some wild anthropomorphic projection your doing there. rather they appear to be treadin VERY carefully knowing that the next gen isn't going to be a pushover.

Sony fans shouldnt be quick to dimiss the others' position.

and you can kindly hat that bias and insiuation and suck on it thanks.

The mistake Nintendo made was not the late launch (althought they DID launch really too late, something like two years after the PS1) but the massive undelivering of potential to third parties. Sure, Sony can't afford to make the same mistake and wait two years only to undeliver, but in the case of MS releasing late 2005, Sony can easily afford to make sure they up the ante in the hardware department, launch June 2006 in Japan and Novemeber 2006 in the USA.

Just having the console in Japan would keep their momentum, as everyone will be seeing what's it capable of. That's not even counting the wildcard that is PSP, which if successful, would be an excelent reassurance that Sony is capable to deliver not only a console with many games, but a hardware that is quite a bit ahead of it's time as well.

Don't forget it will take MUCH longer to MAKE games for next gen systems.
Getting killer apps really "tailored" to push and feed the nextgen hardware ,will need more time , larger teams and more monney than ever.

Only one year an half is already short to average (timespan) this gen ,with current structures of developpement.

one year window between ps3 xbx2 is not that wide.

edited 'cause keyboard dyslexy.
