More ram for vista ?

My mom's XP box features the awe-inspiring "slotketted" P3/1.4Ghz with 512mb of ram (the old-school, SDR, 168-pin DIMMs) with a PCI video card of some crappy sort... Also has a 3Com 3C905b nic, a cheap 8Gb 5400RPM drive (with the whalloping 256k cache if I recall correctly) and a CD/DVD combo (the newest part of the whole thing by a landslide)

She loves it, and it does everything she wants. Performance is pretty good too, even with Norton Antivirus on it.

8 GB HD? Seriously?
My nephew wanted me to set up a celeron laptop with a 5 gig drive and 385 MB of ram for him (his grandmother's old one) and with Office, iTunes and some school software it was full. Completely. It was on W2kP and very slow. I bumped it to the max 512mb and dropped in a 40 GB and Ubuntu is good on it. Have to try w2kp again I guess (he doesn't have a lic for xpp).

You have not used XP x64 have you? I love that OS. Multitasking is lets just say I have an oracle database running, oracle app server running with the soa suite, my ide running and I just finished a game of GRAW2 with every setting cranked. The rig didnt even miss a beat...while I was torrenting like a madman and had my chat clients etc running in the background. The oracle software alone takes up nearly 3 gb RAM.
Actually I did run x64 for about 6-9 months I'd guess and yes it runs great and much better than XP 32 bit IMO. Drivers was far worse than the situation for Vista though and there was no drivers for my soundcard, wireless or printer.

Yep drivers were the catch for that OS luckily I didnt have that issue with my hardware :)
