MAG

Trying to come up with a scheme to encourage teamwork is probably too difficult. That dynamics has to be fostered/brewed somewhere else first (e.g., in forum, or in real life).

I think if PS3 had fostered voice communications from the start cross game or heck even if it was just in game but in all games, you'd see more teamwork. From friends comments that have both consoles, they seem to get the impression that there's a lot more communication and teamwork over Live than there is in multiplayer PS3 games.

You still have your lone wolves, you'll never get rid of those. But I think more prevalent voice communication on PS3 could have done wonders to seed the teamwork that seems necessary for a title like Mag.

I hear ye. Still keen on MAG. I am beginning to think that the most important task is to get the basic combat mechanics right. The high level coordination and (any) meta-game will bring the community tighter together and that's it.

There is plenty of encouragement for teamwork already. You get more XP from destroying targets your squad leader has selected, or reviving teammates. There is also a small additional boost for staying near your squad leader like slightly faster reloading or better accuracy. Most players just seem unaware of that stuff.

That rock-paper-scissors gameplay ?

You know the gun A is more effective against gun B which in turn is more effective against gun C which in turn is more effective against gun A. I know it's a little more complecated then that, but I was looking for a short description of it, and I've seen it being referred to as that.

I'm not an expert, but the game I have some MP experience with on both systems is BF:BC. You get the same level of idiot on both, but the 360 ones are noisier (though when you do get a PS3 user with a mic, they're noisy idiots too). And that's a game that depends heavily on teamplay.

Ah yes, gun switching is very fun in RFOM.

Heh, it's quite possible this friend of mine with both consoles is one of those noisy ones. :) He occasionally shows up for PC LAN gaming and isn't very good. :D

But either way, I find that on the PC side of things, the people that communicate the most and have been voice chatting for a while generally tend to gravitate to teamwork more quickly than those that don't use voice chat much when PC gaming. That doesn't mean that everyone that voice chats in PC gaming are good teamplayers. Just that it's more likely for them to be good teamplayers. The flipside of that however is that there's also more trash talkers (sigh).

Don't do multiplayer on consoles, so was just seeing if my PC experiences correlate to consoles, and I only know a few RL friends with both consoles, and even fewer of those do online gaming on both consoles.

The PS3 once costing 600 Euro's had the advantage of there being very few cursing 12 year olds on it. Of course those days are over, even in 18+ games.

Mag could easily suffer from some of the same problems BF:BC has. The bunkers turret gun will probably be hogged by the same player for as long as possible because it provides complete protection as long as the bunker doesn't get destroyed. Or you can hide safely far away from the frontline trying to boost your K/D ratio, even though you make very few kills that way. A dumb squad leader can rain down an artillery strike on his own squad. Luckily you do get an automated heads up before that happens though.

Yeah... a mic won't change people's behavior overnight. It's most likely because we are a different breed. When I played RFOM, people on GAF shouted for help and enemy sightings too -- while I played quietly. I was/am playing from my office afterall (although I couldn't help but laughed at their jokes).

Now if PS3 users are older on the average, it's natural to expect a different behaviour.

Usually I listen to the chatters and figure out where I should go. Silence doesn't mean people don't coordinate.

EDIT: I think in some games, we have people's (drunk) girlfriends cheering us too.

If anyone has an extra code for the new Full Beta starting now, I would really like to have one.

I really want to check out this game before launch, as I don't think any demo will happen, either way a demo won't be able to give the real feeling of it.

So, guys, If anyone has an extra code, remember ME  !

The current phase of the beta is for people who preordered the game from specific sites.

www.dBGamez.com is one such site.

Edit. www.dvd.co.uk is another. This phase only lasts until Nov. 20th.

They really should do a demo for this game. Otherwise it might be difficult for them to sell this new concept because it's MP only.

An MP demo might work, or price it slightly lower (initially) to drive adoption. The people who pre-ordered will need to be taken care of though.

I think the game is worth full price, but I could see it having difficulty selling at that price point. Including a headset might be a good idea for added value, and for better teamwork in the game itself.

It's going to be interesting to see how well it sells. And what Sony is going to do to help it sell. If they are going to do anything at all

I see your point, but it's hard to visualize for us outside the MAG beta -- especially with the MW2 momentum.

They may need to go an extra mile to entice people to try their product.

How big is the game ? Can they include it in some Blu-ray war movies for demo-and-buy purposes ?

So I played this a bit adn Like it and might move from cod to this when it comes out. But I have to ask are there any alternatives to the ps3 controller ? Its god awful for me.

The current beta is 2,8 Gb.

The basic shooting in MAG is similar to MW2, and it also has a lot of stuff to unlock to customize your character. But beyond that MAG is a lot more complex, and a lot less forgiving. An open beta might be a good way to draw the more hardcore gamer away from MW2.

We can definitely use more players in the beta right now. Finding games takes longer, and often there are simply too few players to cover every bunker. Leaving big holes in your defence.

If they are going to do anything at all

THAT is the key question here. Will Sony bother to market it. And even if they do, will they actually do a good job of it?

I tried the game recently at the EG expo and it didn't impress me at all, as it came across as a muddy-looking slightly sub-standard shooter. Which, on the surface, is exactly what it is.

But it's not a pickupandplay game that can grab people within a few minutes. I haven't had a chance at the beta, but I've read enough to be of the opinion that the game needs some player dedication, along with a willingness to work in a team, for it to shine at all. I was actually disappointed at the Expo that Sony couldn't even be bothered to send a minion from their London office to oversee the demo being played, to give insight into the team ethic the game requires, the need for tactical play, etc.

Pretty much everyone I spoke to after their 10 mins or so with the game was less than impressed. But of course, given the nature of the title, that's all they were ever going to be after 10 mins with it and no guidance from a developer rep.

I'm not so sure about sub-standard. I got the beta with Qore or something and I've only played it a couple of times (because I would usually miss the window) but I was pretty impressed. It felt a lot like a battlefield game except with better hitboxes and with less cannon fodder groundtroops. I find most other MP games boring, but MAG clicked for me.

Ok. I am curious about their dedicated server setup. Will definitely give it a try.

The art side doesn't inspire me that much (but than again, the same goes for CoD). I will get MW2 next week so I have a reference to compare MAG to.

You can buy the XCM Cross Battle Adapter for $40 bucks and it lets you use a 360 pad on the ps3 and vice versa. It's pretty good and well worth the money.I suggest you invest in one as the PS3 pad is pretty crappy for fps games..

And for every other kind of game the Dual-shock 3 is much better I think ;)
