MAG

Their servers have something unique indeed...the game has the least amount of bullet latency I've seen on a console game.

And the game barely ever has connection issues.

Ok, good to know they have at least a robust internal system today. The real test comes when hackers, glitchers and laggers from all over the world meet. ^_^

Is this for EU only ?

To sign up for the MAG beta, head to eu.playstation.com/competitions and follow the instructions. That’s it – no questions or puzzles, just one big beta free-for-all.

What is the scheme for US gamers ?

I'd thought the US one was limited (exclusively?) to Qore subscribers.

Thanks for the heads-up though. Heading over now.

yea that would of made more sense, just had my first game its seems fun more foucsed than cod, is clan support in the beta?

Heh, patsu's link served me well. Got the code yesterday too. And it took me ages for a 2.6gb DL. I hope that's the same one everyone's referring to when they say "3gb"!

Haven't had the chance to really try it out given the restriced times the servers are up but will make a concerted effort soon.

Got my code a couple of days ago and let the PS3 download the data files at night to try it yesterday.

The 'default texture' on the truck was funny but the graphics look good considering the size of the maps.

I haven't played FPPs since Duke Nukem and KZ2 was my first FPS on a console experience. I absolutely love KZ2 which what I will compare MAG to.

Unlike KZ2, you don't recover when you get shot, you need to find a medkit and I was dying like crazy.

I prefer the art direction in KZ2 but, like I said, the graphics look good considering how big the maps are.

I experienced no lag but never got the feeling that I was playing tens and tens of people. In KZ2 some areas (e.g. Radec Academy during search and destroy) can get really crowded. I never saw more than a few people around me in the maps I played in MAG.

I will continue trying it to see if I like but it seems I've spent too much time playing KZ2 and tend to compare other games to that one.

SCEA should give it mouse and keyboard support, as it could draw in the PC gamer crowd until BF3 hits, which is sure to have 128 player support or even higher. As far as the "I'm just one man in a huge army, what does it matter?" bit, I'm a big believer in everyone can do their part to win, and yes a single player can turn the tide with proper leadership. I've experienced this so many times in BF2. One good squad leader + 5 squad mates with him really can cry havoc. Also in such large scale conflict, you need vehicles and many soldier classes, so everyone feels important to the team in their own way, since they can bring their unique skills/weapon sets to the team or squad. Does MAG have vehicles? I'd assume so since the maps are large (but still small compared to the largest in BF2).

Also, how does the Cell handle the large scale? I had a big argument with a friend last night over how he claims that only the PS3's Cell could handle MAG in its sheer scale simply because handling 256 non-AI players would be difficult with the 360, when I think it wouldn't be too difficult considering I've seen some pretty damn impressive single player + 80 AI player battles with the Battlefield 2 AIX mod, which or course includes vehicle usage, and on a single x86 2.26 GHz Core 2 CPU core mind you. I could only ponder at the possibilities if BF2 could use both for super huge AI battle goodness! They then proceed to berate me with why there were so few FPS games on the 360 with more than 16 player support. The PS3 is essentially just as limited, since there are few games on both the 360 and PS3 that support above 16 players, with a few supporting 32 players. I think if there was a reason there are very few 32 player MP games on consoles in general is that the console space has it's mind set in 16 players thanks to Halo 2. It's a good number, especially with the limited map sizes consoles of the last generation could really handle without too much of a performance drop. But I think the claim that only Teh Cell!, Teh Cell! is able to handle such a high number of players is madness, since I was playing 64 player games of the original Call of Duty on my first laptop with a lowly 1.6 GHz Pentium M quite nicely. I'm sure the scaling and positioning of players in newer games is alot heavier these days, but I don't see it being a massive problem these days, especially when I assume MAG is using outside servers to run games, so they'd would be handling the brunt of the work anyways.

Does anyone even know how to play this game?

I have some idea of what my objective is. I have no idea of how complete an objective, or who is giving my orders, or what those are. And I'm not alone in this. Everyone is just wandering around aimlessly, not knowing what to do.

There is a training mission in there that teaches you everything you need to know. However that's locked, like all the other gamemodes except one.

Until we actually get the training mission I don't see any point in playing this. It's more like a huge deathmatch game right now, with you being shot at from every direction.

I don't see problems playing MAG. Infotext gives link to a community website, where we can find MAG forum. This guide gives a pretty good picture what to do.
Newbie MAG guide

I think beta testers, be it closed or open, must be ready to take some time studying external docs. It's after all a work in progress. This is a game headset is in full use, can already see some clans using it and they rock. One of the most best use is take an armoured vehicle, clan members abroad, crash to the site, use a machinegun on top, other ppl undeploy to sweep closeby enemies.

Try to gain points and upgrade sensor gears to identify enemies more precisly.

MAG do have a potential and current gameplay is enjoyable. It do need more knowledge than say BF1943 fps.

Looks like Sony may want to compete w/ itself

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/26/rumor-sony-survey-hints-at-planetside-2-development/

a number of PlanetSide subscribers recently received an SOE email survey asking for inspiration as the developer begins to "plan to expand the PlanetSide universe with another game."

The language in the survey (posted after the jump) doesn't make it sound like SOE is working on a half-baked expansion or a genre-defying spinoff, as it tells participants, "the information you provide will play a critical role into helping guide the development and direction of the next hit Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter."

so after playing a few games i have desided that i may also skip cod4-2 for this, the games that i have player have had people on ps3 talk to each other in a helpfull way (i havent seen this before on console bar the pgr games on xb) the game play seems to have a nice mix of run and gun and tactical play.

the gfx are ok, that said i think i have been spoiled by having a half (q6600 and hd2900 lol!) pc but i just wish this or uncharted were co-op online so i could get my housemate/gf to play as well (its the reason that i have owned warhawk but never played a ranked match) as it would then become our main game, but i like it a lot atm its has already replaced kz2:oops:.......

Wait a minute, what Cornsnake asked for seems to be an in-game help. Are the above resources readily available on the battle field or in the lobby ?

Not really a problem though. Each shooter will differentiate from each other by content, mechanics or business model. Otherwise we would only have 1 shooter per console. These titles can stagger their releases too.

I donno why but the download of the second beta seems to be awfully slow.
And for some unknown reason my download got struck on 51%.

Why is it that they have to make us download 2GB as a patch...why not include it in the beta itself.downloading from PSN is much more convenient than this useless shit.
