Is there a worse penalty than a red card in soccer? Like in american football where you can be ejected from the stadium? That would qualify

Not at the time of the match, though a red card generally leads to a ban from one or more of the subsequent matches. Players have had formal legal assault/ABH/GBH charges filed against them by the police in the past.

To clarify that:

A red card leads to the opening of a case at the penalty division of the football association that is responsible for the match (e.g. the league in league match, UEFA in Champions League matches, FIFA in world cup matches). The penalty division will then determine the sentence for the player after a hearing. The sentence can range from a ban for several matches to lifelong bans and the hearing panel can also issue fines.

Additionally the penalty division can also open a case if the referee missed a severe foul (e.g. based on video evidence). If I am not mistaken, it can't open a case, if the referee saw the foul, blew his whistle and didn't give a card or only gave a yellow card.


The criminal investigation is completely separate from that process, as nutball explained.

Quite amusing reading that entry. There have been two attempted burglaries on Ferguson's houses and he's captured (or hospitalised) the burglars on both occasions! Not somebody to mess around with!
