Little problem...

Right guys, now, read this and help if u can. pretty please...

There is a land far faaaar away where for some distorted reasons PS2 is the only console out of them all to be able to output a progressive scan signal.

That land is called "Europe"... :?

One day little Danny wakes up and finds out that some games (like the getaway and primal and tekken 4) have an option to enable progressive scan on PS2

Thing is, since in Middle Earth... ehm... Europe........
Since in Europe there are no progressive scan standards (no 480p no 720p no 1020i nothing at all), there are also NO tv's that can take a progressive scan signal. Unless u are a rich hobbit with enough money to but a plasma screen that is. And even then i fail to see how that works out with no "standards"...

So, MOST NATURAL THOUGHT would be "let's plug it into a monitor!" or, in the case of little Danny, "let's plug it to my LG LCD tv which also doubles as an UXGA monitor!!"...

That way, when selecting the progressive scan option on those few mighty games, IT WOULD SIMPLY WORK... He wasn't asking for much... Only for it to WORK.

Well, Danny starts his journey into the Land of the Net and finds a VGA box... MOST NATURAL REACTION would be... U GUESSED IT! plug the box in, select ProScan mode and there u go, ProScan on Danny's monitor...

Fair enough, it's not Dreamcast native VGA output, but it's still progressive scan, much better that interlaced mode...

Well, end of the story (tired of writing now) the whole thing doesnt work..... It just wont work... At least when i hook it up with RGB Scart and select ProScan i get a flickery mess... This thing just DOES NOT work AT ALL... Black screen... Actually it's blue but anyway...

Now, anyone care to enlighten a little young man?

Thank you very very very very much.

Actually Europe does have 720p, 1080i and 1080p HDTV standards. No one knows about them thou :D It's embarrasing.

But hmm, LCD TV and VGA box.. I don't see what goes wrong there.. I blame the PS2. Never trusted those things... :)

you don't have to buy a plasma screen.

i think some CRT from panasonic do the progressive scan. like the:

PANASONIC TX36PB50 and TX32PB50 models do it.

look are their tau models.

London-boy, how do you connect your VGA box to your PS2?

If it's via composite or S-video connectors it most probably won't work since these signals are specced for 15kHz horiz scan rate and progressive is 30kHz.

You probably need a straight VGA cable like the one supplied with the PS2 linux kit, but then you also need a monitor that can handle sync-on-green, which far from all monitors can. Check the official PS2 Linux site and look at their monitor database for compatible models.

*G*

Why don't Europeans just buy an American progressive-scan display to play games on? I doubt shipping on one of those LCD Entertainment Displays or the Samsung multimedia monitors would be that expensive...

Depending on how much you want to spare, you may use the component cable and a cheaper transcoder for just the progressive games.

XBlaster at US$199

http://www.copperbox.com/lite/popinfo.php?lc_code=KD-XB&uneek=970088779

It can be used for X-BOX, PS2 and GCN with component cable and progressive output (480p or above) with your monitor.

Or Audio Authority 09A62 at US$149

This one claims to only support 480p.

But your monitor must support 15KHz scanning rate or else you won't see anything when the consoles boot up and you cannot see the question asking if you are changing to progressive mode in PS2 and Gamecube.

right..... what about the Blaze VGA box-cable?? anyone tried that yet?

I forgot that one. That should be a cheapo solution and it at least supports progressive games. There should be a sync sep. chip inside.

I suppose progressive games do not need to boot from the Blaze CD, but the supported interlaced games will (I read from local users of the product the doubled interlaced output from interlaced games are no good).

so what does the blaze vga box software do for those games that do not support proscan :? ?

it should work with proscan games though shouldnt it...

It force the PS2 to give a progressive output on some interlaced games, but the quality is ... not good.

That is just a cable and I suppose that should be fine with progressive games with your PS2 set to RGB output since some guys simply use the cable that come with the Linux kit with monitors that support sync on green.

but the ps2 only does progressive scan when set on YPsPr, not RGB.........

But they are playing games with monitors on these cables, they should be working I suppose.

but on the instructions manual of both the games and the Ps2, it goes "it will only work with component cables and when YPsPr is selected from the System Configuration".

i'm using an RGB Scart cable and it gives a messy flickery picture...

my LCD screen does not have a component video in (the one with three jacks - blue, green and red) it only has an RGB Scart, S-video and VGA in

and what about this whole sync on green thing???

my head hurts....

Sync on green means embedded composite sync on the green signal, normal VGA signal is RGBHV in 5 separated signal lines, composite sync on green use 3 signal lines like component video (sync on Y).

I haven't tried the cable myself, I use transcoder for progressive games.

which means that i'm gonna have to try it and waste 20 quid on the bloody cable. which i know it won't work. because IT NEVER WORKS (its a principle)(from Murphy's Law).

cant believe there's NOTHING on the immense ocean of information that is the internet to tell me whether it works or not. im not asking for much am i....

Not quite true... Even though there is no standard for progressive output for RGB SCART, the PS2 does output RGB progressively.

Well I'll tell you right now that it does work (and I mean the Linux Kit cable). As maskrider mentioned, just set your component output to RGB. The games will boot in interlaced mode as always so you need to have it hooked up to a regular TV first, then set the game to progressive and switch the cables. Keep in mind that this only works with games that do support progressive scan and monitors with sync-on-green (I've done it myself with SOCOM, Burnout 2, and Tekken4). Also, the colors may look a bit washed out because they're optimized for the narrower gamut of a TV as opposed to a monitor...

thanx archie..... how about the blaze vga box?

finding the linux kit cable is a bit of an adventure in itself....

The Blaze VGA cable should be the Linux cable + built in sync sep. chip that you do not need a sync on green capable monitor to use progressive output.

OHHHHH....

thank u so much, u've been really helpful, really appreciate...

of course, if it doesnt work im gonna kill u but anyway... lets be optimistic

Ha ha ha ha !

I suppose no one here have tried that cable with PAL games.

But anyway, you are welcome to fly to HK and kill me.
