The Japanese consumer electronics companies aim to develop broadband-enabled televisions that can download and display videos from the internet wihtout the need for a separate set-top box or computer.

They plan to establish a common standard for aspects of internet TV, based on a Linux operating system.

This sounds like an embedded Linux OS, but I wonder if this has any bearing on the PS3 Linux Sony has been talking about.

that would mean an integrated ps3 inside a tv then. cause they talk about NOT to use an external device like a pc or settop box . In that logic, the ps3 is also considered as one.

I would rather think they are talking about one of the Linux variants tailored for running on rather mediocre hardware... computer on a board kind of things with the equivalent of a 486 or something. :)

Not a whole PS3. If they were talking a Cell platform, they could use Sony's PS3 linux variant (if it's any good!) on a small Cell. Sounds to me though like a softare standard that'll run off a linux kernal to be put on whatever hardware the TV manufacturer wants.
