LCD Question

A friend of mine recently purchased a X360 and 32" Samsung LCD TV:

http://www.samsung.com/uk/products/television/tftlcd/le32r41bdxxeu.asp

The native res is 1366x768 so when connecting the X360 via the supplied component cable you can clearly see scaling of the image to fit the screen. Does anyone know if trying a different cable will help, VGA (or is it RGB)? The TV has HDMi input but I cant find any HDMI cables for the X360.

Does anyone have the same TV?

What is the effect of the scaling that you are seeing? Also, make sure that the component cable is switched to the HD output and that he's correctly set 720p as an output option in the Systems blade.

There is no HDMI out cable for the Xbox 360.

The VGA cable gives you the best picture quality (according to one of the PGR3 team members)...

The demo pods don't show any noticable scaling and they're just smaller versions of that screen. As Sis says, I'd check the cable and the systems settings before anything else.

I'm currently in a quandry as to whether to get the 40" version of that screen or Samsung's 50" DLP to go with my X360, anyone with any experience of the newer DLPs with HD sources please feel free to pipe up with your thoughts.

I think this just depends on the TV.

The demo pods use the 23" version which has a native res 1280x720 hence no scalling.

Did you flick the switch on the HDTV cable? You have to make sure it's set for a HDTV signal. I think the defaul setting is SDTV.

Trust me it is 1280x720p for the 41B, download the manual.

Ok I've just read that using the VGA cable allows for different resolutions to be selected:

640x480, 848x480, 1024x768, 1280x720, 1280x768, and 1360x768

So Im assuming using the VGA cable with the output set to 1360x768 on a LCD TV with a native of 1366x768 would give better results.

Not necessarily, it just depends on whether the TV or the 360 does a better job at scaling the image, it is still rendered at 1280x720 or whatever the particular game uses either way so it won't be the difference like it would be when changing the resolution on a PC game. So it might not look any better and may even look worse scaling wise over VGA, all VGA gets you for sure is full RGB colorspace instead of component's compressed YCbCr.

Are you sure you have the swtich on the component cable set right and the console set to a HD resolutioni in dashboard?

Yeah cable set to HD and 720p in dashboard. The scalling is very minimal just would be nice to get a true 720p image or lock the pixels some how and have a small black border around the edge, scalling annoys the shit out of me.

You can not have 720p res output of 360 on 768p hdtv without upscaling (I think); you will need to swap tv for 720p version.

well I won't need to swap anything I don't have a LCD TV, It's my friend who has the TV. I'm just trying to figure this all out before I buy one for myself.

It would be nice if someone could give some feedback on VGA vs Component on a 1360(1366)x768 TV?

There are most likely some picture position/size options on the TV that would let you scrunch it in to where it only fills 1280x720 pixels and just leave you with a black border, but that seems a bit eccentric bother with. If the scaling really looks that bad your friend would probably be better off just returning the TV for something else. Any HDTV that can't handle 720p well simply isn't worth buying at this point and the vast majorty of fixed pixel displays on the market today have no trouble with 720p reguardless of their native resolution.

But yeah, if it is just that the TV has a crappy scaler, then using the VGA cable should get you by as then you could let the 360 do the work.

Nope, the native resolution is exactly the same as the larger screens, 1366x768, http://www.samsung.com/uk/products/television/tftlcd/le23r41bxxeu.asp

I'm pretty sure the native resolution on the demo pods 23 inch Samsung is 1366x768. Jon Brittan is correct.

There is two UK versions, 41B and 51B

41B = 1280x720
51B = 1366x768

there also appears to be two different US versions, taken from manual:

I would of thought they would of used the 1280x720p version for the pods, would of made sense.
