Japanese developers discuss the next-gen consoles

GameSpot

Basically:

PS3: Huge power
Revolution: Little information, unique...
X360: Well-ballance machine and network capability

Some interesting comments:

Tomonobo Itagaki:

Itagaki was also surprisingly positive (and paternal) about the PlayStation 3, saying that the console is currently at a point where it is like a "new-born baby in a good sense." He sees the current stage as a period where everyone should look after it to make sure it "grows up to become a good child," and said that he hopes it will "grow up to be strong."

Square Enix´s Akitoshi Kawatsu:

"When the machines evolve this far, they lose characteristics. As a developer, I'm most concerned about how much memory they're equipped with--the more, the better. The other specs aren't that important. I don't think that their graphic capabilities are too far apart from each other. Of course, their specs haven't been finalized yet, and we won't actually know how difficult it is to develop on them until we try it out," said Kawatsu.

Masanori Takeuchi, Otogi series producer at From Software:

PlayStation 3 - "To be honest, it's still full of unknown factors, and it's difficult to comment on. In my own opinion, it doesn't seem like hardware that will make games more fun. It's being called a 'supercomputer', so I guess it's like a set top box which functions like a PC. My impression [of the console] is like, 'It can also play games, which is good.'"

when

Now, back to topic.

I'd like to hear more from developers like Konami, Namco and Capcom, especially from Hideo Kojima. I don't really believe him stating he doesn't know the internals of the PS3 yet. :p

Kojima:"PS3 would be like a dinner you only have once a year or twice a year on your anniversary," he said, whereas Xbox 360 would be something you had "two or three times a month" and Revolution "is the kind of great dinner that you have every day at your home".
:)

That will make you either a prophet or an a$$hole.I 'm uneasy on betting on prophet for now.

The comments are from japanese developers, so its easy to spot a bit of bias in their comments, even if the Xbox 360 would have become twice as powerfull as the PS3 they would have brought down the comments about it to a minimum like they did with the Xbox.

Aside from Square Enix Comments, i find the rest to be biased. But thats just me.

Perhaps the bias would be there with western devs too.
I think it's mainly because of the market/mindshare.

They know it'll be the no.1 console, they know it'll be the one that'll pretty much dictate the next gen game development.

Care to explain why it's easy to spot a bias?

Agreed. What do you guys expect? A dev bitching about PS3, when PS3 might probably be the main form of income to his studio?

For 3rd party devs, it's good politics to play nice to whoever's got the big money.
While 1st and 2nd party ones will obviously sound biased.

Yep, all of the 3rd party devs have sounded very very supportive towards all platforms.
They'd be dumb not to, and unprofessional.

Gosh that is rediculously rude...

You mean "Gosh phil, that is ridiculously rude" or "Gosh (the poster), that is ridiculously rude"?

I asked myself the same question.....I think it was intentional...or some weird twist of fate

There playing it smart. They don't want to seem over enthusiastic about any console yet because unlike forum people they have no clue who ill be no.1 next gen and by what margin. I think alot of devs are waiting to se how the 360 launch goes before going gungho on any console. Everybody is riding the fence.

And they should ride the fence. I don't want to hear any craziness from any of these guys. Just games. Prove your point through the product.

Replace "dinner" with "secks" instead and it gets a bit more interesting... :D
