IT Career Advice

rashly

Regular
right now i work fulltime at a school district as a district computer assistant (basically i fix computers, solve small networking problems, and do special projects like set up shoutcasting for baseball games over the internet) and i go to school fulltime at night going for a computer science bachelors degree.

school sucks.

school is the biggest waste of time i have ever encountered between having to listen to the idiots in my english class struggle with aloud readings, having to sit through classes like italian which pertain nothing to my degree, and knowing more about programming/computers than my professors. its driving me crazy to have to go in everyday and learn nothing, just to come home at night and do more homework that doesnt educate me.

after this semester i will have 2 years worth of credits and have 2 full years to go to get my degree. the remaining 2 years will cost me well over $10000 which is not much for college, but its still a hell of alot of money. thankfully because i work at a school district i will be covered by medical insurance if i leave college.

what i want to do is quit school after this semester and go for my accredidations (rhce, msce (this is good for someone at a school district to have), and a level or 2 of cisco certifications depending on money/time). i feel that having the knowledge from these accredidation courses will actually educate me on what i want to do, and that combined with the credibility from actually being certified will more than make up for the strictly social norm of one having a college degree.

i know that my education level based on what i want to do will be 10x greater with the certifications than with college, but is college that important in the IT field if someone has these certifications? do IT jobs agree with the "one must finish college even if one learns nothing just because society says so" mentality?

so, my question is to the people here who work in the IT field. my opinion is that certifications are worth much more than a degree is in this field and i would be better off spending my time and money by leaving college and taking courses in these accredidations. what are your opinions on the matter?

ps. as far as im concerned, doing both is out of the question because that is way too much money and time. only staying in school for one more year and getting my associates degree is also, because if i was going to do that i might as well go the extra year and get my bachelors. also, i know that people are going to want to give me the advice to stay in school, but i want honest opinions based on your experiences in the industry.

thanks alot.

My opinions, not even knowing you, and only glancing at your post (and these apply to anybody who asks the same question):

1) You do not know as much as you think you do.
2) You learn more than what to do in school, you also learn what not to do.
3) Many companies put non-degreed resumes in the garbage.
4) You're setting yourself up to always get paid less.

There are always exceptions, of course, but thats my opinion. Take the time to get the degree. You've finally finished the idiot work, the next two years will let you take all the good courses.

In general what Russ said is the rule, but there are always exceptions.

Depending on your profile, what kind of certification you will get and people you know.
Are you going for the CCIE?
