is there a way to disable the P.S. 1.4 support of NV3X?

the answer is no.

Matrox Parhelia = DX9 VS 2.0 PS 1.3
Xabre400 PS 1.3, VS via CPU
Nvidia NV25 PS1.3 VS 1.1
S3 XP4 dunno, has this chip actually been released?

NV30/31/34 PS 2.0 and VS 2.0
R200/250/280 PS 1.4 VS 1.1
R300/RV350 PS 2.0 VS 2.0

Hmm, that`s a rather nasty reaction  Well, as far as i know, in ps 1.4 you can only do dependatn texture reads once meaning that you work on a texture and you have only ONE chance to use that texture in its modified state as a base for more work-in PS 2.0 you don`t have that limitation.

Which is why I said multi-pass. You'r comments are still confusing to me given what I stated.

On the other hand, PS 1.4 means INT12

Not quite the case on the 8500/9000, which is why I mentioned them specifically. :?: A surprise?

, while PS 2.0 means at least FP24-a quite considerable precision delta, wouldn`t you say?

Yes, I would, actually. That's why I don't call the nv3x operating at anything approaching peak pixel shader performance PS 2.0.

You could perhaps cut a LOT of corners, and make it work more or less-but it wouldn`t be a comparison-that was my point. You can`t compare a wireframe render to a textured one, can you? ;)

Hmm...been gone a month or two?

Of course if some app relies on a range greater than [-2, 2], it could use ps2_0 on DX9 hardware and ps1_4 on ATI DX8 hardware. But frankly, I don't expect this to happen very often.

Well, if they're using DX 9 HLSL, what exactly would be the difficulty? Are PS 1.4 cards, and the upcoming RS300 integrated chipset, going to be that insignifcant of a concern?

Note that my curiosity for the 3dmark tests is not based on multipassed PS 1.4 being as good as PS 2.0 or any such thing, but on the idea of what is technically possible for output and performance within the capabilities of cards when the tests are custom coded.

EDIT: Hmm...I guess another question is if anyone will ever use Direct X's defined shaders for the nv34.

heh, yeah yeah, I made a boo-boo. So shoot me. Make that Via S3 DeltraChrome, as S3 as a company is virtually gone, with their sale of the RIO subsystems. Kind of sad to see them go, as a few of my friends worked for S3, Diamond and FireGL over the years

Neither Trident XP4 or DeltaChrome have made it to retail yet.
