...to use more than one powersupply for a given system? Just a..hypothetical question.

let's say I want to connect the main mobo power to one PSU, and then use a completely different PSU to power the components. It should be fine, right?
 
Not good. Two power supplies won't give the exact same voltages for any of the outputs, causing current loops in the system.

What you'd need to do is tie the +5v, +12v, -12v together as close to the power supply, decouple with caps, etc. It really would be easier to just buy a larger power supply.
