ipod video vs psp - getting interesting

Sony who insist on establishing yet another format, against another well supported format I might add (Notice a pattern here!) UMD will quickly become a niche product like minidisc.

How do you know that the UMD will be a niche product? So far it's doing pretty good. Some people like you also said that it would be DOA. Unlike Betamax the UMD is not currently competing with anybody. If it continues to sell millions per year UMD will be around for a while.

allow me a quick comment.

I disagree that people interested necesarily have access to a PC, one key benefit of a console/PSP/DS is that they don't require you to own a PC. The fact that you have to own an extra peripheral just to transfer content would put many people off. You would lose the ability to quickly swap games with other people e.g. kids at school.

as much as i agree with your point about a self-sustained portable in generall the psp does not quite fall in this cathegory (unlike the ds). one of its functions - the one of a music player, heavily relies on the ability of the device to connect to desktops. i believe it was also mentioned in the system specs what kind of desktop you're required to have.

Portable video will never be as big a deal as portable audio. Or cell phones for that matter.

How many people will be able to use portable video on a daily basis like portable audio or cell phones?

Sure people taking long commuter train rides. Anyone else? Does your boss mind if you watch a TV show or movie while you're at work?

The iPod is primarily a music player. Apple is positioning video as an "extra." If portable video proves popular, especially if the downloads sell well and they get a lot of content deals, maybe they make a player more suited to video, with a larger screen, better processor, battery, etc.

But the iPod still has the form factor for audio. Yes it's screen is not big enough but it's a lot easier to take with you than the PSP or the Archos. So it will get more use certainly for audio and maybe for video too. BTW, it's only $50 more than the PSP with 30 GB of storage. No it can't play games. But it can play music, which again is a more common daily thing for more people than gaming on the go.

I think video will become a really big thing on phones . My phone pictured before in the thread has room for a much bigger screen. They could double up the screen and it would make for a great viewing experiance.

Sure for along time video will just be a secondary option on a phone. But one day i believe we will simply have a screen for a phone like some of the blueberry devices . It wil lb a touch pad with all the numbers on it and that screen will be used for video as well as games .

Its really just a matter of time for the screen tech to get cheap enough

Just for reference there are already small HDD music players with big screens. The iRiver U10 and the Olympus mrobe 500 come to mind. The iPod is backwards small screen big case.

Obviously it doesn't mean that this will be sustained, but it was interesting to see that there were over 1 million video downloads from iTunes in the first 20 days. There's clearly money to be made if the usage model can be figured out.

Go check out my Warner is on PSP thread. UMDs are also doing pretty good. I agree that the ipod video and UMDs are in for a fight.

The major problem with umd is its only in one device right now and it doesn't look to change in the future

Howeve the itune program can actually grow . I use downloaded itunes on my verizon phone and i believe i can run the video on my phone (though i have to change the res )

You can even use it with a quick run through psp9 on your psp

So eventualy umd will be over taken if it hasn't been overtaken already

Sony have said they're open to other manufacturers using the UMD format though. The downside is who can create a UMD movie player for cheaper than a PSP? Plus the screen-resolution is static so a large screen, 7" say, is going to lose quality.

Your answer may be right here. This is what Howard Stringer said in an interview a few days ago.

In a demonstration of the swift collaborative response to consumer-driven marketplace changes that a revitalized Sony can deliver, the company soon will unveil a line of compact, portable video devices to fill the time gap before PlayStation 3 launches in Japan in March and in the U.S. a year from now.

Unlike the PlayStation Portable, which has been elevated to a benchmark multimedia player with numerous upgrades since its launch eight months ago, these new, smaller devices will focus primarily on video and transferring user-selected content from digital video recorders and other devices using Sony Memory Sticks, direct downloads and preloaded fare. Sony's plans are still being developed under tight secrecy, but it is clear that the company's hope is to remind consumers that Sony already is active in the spaces where Apple wants to go with the video iPod.

Could this new portable video unit support UMDs also? Maybe.

Yeah, how is PSP dead?

And PSP can play the exact same MP4s that iPod can - so this engine would work for both. I have a bunch of my DVDs/DIVXs converted to MP4 and I throw them both onto my iPod and PSP. PSP is MUCH nicer to watch stuff on, but I always have my iPod with me and I never have to worry about deleting stuff or fitting it onto a memory card. There's no clear winner in terms of video performance; both have pros and cons.

Regardless, PSP is capable of a lot more than an iPod is :) If it had a HDD.. oooh baby.
