Internet policies at work

How many of you guys browse the internet (which means, how many of u visit B3D from work, since once u come here, u never go back)?

From today a new policy has been put into place here where I work, and "in theory" no one is allowed to use emails and internet for "personal purposes".

Hasnt stopped me from making this post, but well it means that your favourite poster ever in the whole Universe (talking about ME, follow my lead here) will have to pretty much stop posting here, apart from lunchtime or when i'm somwhere else.

Oh well....

My workplace has a similar "written policy".
Though it is not controlled in any way, so nobody really obeys it.

I don't think my company has policies on anything. I pretty much do what I want as long as I get the work allocated to me done.

i have 1 dedicated pc over here just for doing that! browsing the internet whenever i can 8)

my work involves broadband backbone work, so it's my excuse to see if everything works allright on our network :p

Well, I've heard people talking, I'm sure it's just rumors, but they said that some people have internet access at home...!

I'm pretty sure it's just bullshit, but I thought I might as well tell you, just in case.

My current job has no restrictions on net access, so long as it doesn't interfere with my duties. (There are perks to being a stay-at-home Dad. ;) )

My last job made you take a class and get a security clearance before they'd even THINK about letting you use their network to access the internet....and to take the class you had to get three managers signatures on your request. (US Steel in Gary, IN)

I could only get two signatures, so I just went straight thru their firewall the old-fashioned way....MUCH easier than dealing with the beauracracy! ;)

I wonder what made them go to such lengths...

Well my company is tough in words, but teh managers around me are OK, as well as other ppl, and so far network guys are not sending me any messages so I guess I am OK.

4 years though I know a guy who got a caution on 'too much net' problem, but so far that's teh only one I heard about.

Well it helps that i'm also the network guy in our (small) company and actually operate the proxy/firewall and all that stuff. Needless to say my computer is not affected by any policies :D 8)

For the record, I tried to alert our network people there to the hole I found in their network for THREE MONTHS before I exploited it.

I got an e-mail (actually a fake inter-office e-mail thingy, I didn't have internet rights  ) one day from our head network guy telling me thanks but to leave the networking to the network guys.

After that I had my own private T1 to keep me midnight shifts from getting too boring. ;)

LB, you work somewhere?? I thought you were doing some 3D course??
By the amount of posting l-b is doing (was? ) here it is indeed hard to believe he works :D But I really do believe he's just so efficient that he gets his job done quick.

We should write a petition to london-boys employer, to allow l-b spend more time on B3D forums!

hmmm... now what do I do at work  fortunately I'm at my summer holiday now.

Where I work its pretty much "go somewhere too much and we'll block it if we cant find a work use for it". So for example pretty much due to my love for webcomics I can no longer access PA or Ctrl-Alt-Del, yet i check B3D and nvnews about 5 to 6 times a day. I guess they figure with all the hardware related chats that I could have legitmiate reasons to be here. So these places never ended up banned. Casual surfing every now and then to news sites or enthusiast sites is pretty much the norm for when things go quiet.

Jaysis. That can't be the brightest bulb ever made! Maybe he feels if you spot a fire you should just ignore it and leave that sort of stuff to the firefighter guys??? *knocks temple with finger*

At my workplace internet access is password protected and the policy says internet use is only allowed for work porposes. However, since we have no user management that deserves the name i just use an account of a former coworker who was fired 1 1/2 years ago. No one ever noticed.

I don't think we have an official policy. Since I don't think it ever have been needed. The practical policy is that you can do your private surfing as long as you do your assigned job. Private emails are no problem either. But if you send a mail to everybody@our-company.se with private stuff like "Anyone want to buy a ticket to...", then you're in for some bashing from the boss.

We also have a unofficial policy to put prefixes on mail subjects to say what project it's related to, so if project=FOO:
FOO: The flibber module is working just fine now.

If you follow that, and use the right prefix, you could even send non-work emails to the whole department, without anyone getting mad, like:
JUNK: Jar Jar of the week goes to...

And that specific subject is actually usually seen every week, and the mails usually enjoyed, even by the boss (unless his name is mentioned in that mail). :D

I'M ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, no 2-seconds-replies from LB must feel weird for you guys, but i'm still here, sometimes...

Dipak, the 3D course is on hold at the moment, i'm still working full time...

And to anyone worried about my work, i just had my performance review for this year, top marks, which also means top bonus!! And all with B3D and emails all over the place, so yeah i must be quite efficient... :D
