Importing from US -> EU

oi

Regular
So I'm kinda tempted to buy a new TV and would like one which can handle progressive scan. The problem though is that here (Sweden) I'd have to shell out like $5000 for anything above 30" (the general rule is that it's pretty much 2x US prices concerning home electronics heh). So I was wondering how much additional import taxes you pay when you buy from the US to EU? Or if anyone could point me to a site within EU that has "cheap" prices. I dunno though if it's like here regarding prices on electronics in the rest of EU (elite special taxes on electronics and so on ;) )..

Hi

You are going to pay American sales tax (included in price). Then around 5-8% (dont know what the sweedish number is) in customs tax...and finally you'll probably have to pay Swedish sales tax of about 20-25% on top of that if i remember correctly.

If you order from a US store directly to Sweden, you shouldn't pay any US tax, although I'm not sure if there's any store that will be willing to ship a TV. VAT within the EU AFAIK changes between countries, so you'd pay the normal one for Sweden, and any additional customs, which I guess would be something you'd have to find through local internet portals or by phoning them. If TVs are pretty expensive, it's possible that the reason is tax, and then you won't save anything by ordering from the US.

Thanks for the info! So um, I'd pretty much have to go to the US and then bring it home in person to avoid the taxes? :cry:

Edit: I actually asked a guy I know in the US who's comming to visit me in the summer if he could buy one and bring it with him, but he didn't think it'd be very comfortable to drag around on ~40" TV =P

It's hard to compare prices if you don't tell the specific model, type or at least your requirements in more detail. You can get a quite conventional 103cm 4:3 TV for ~1500 Euros here in Germany, but if you want a 32" 16:9 plasma TV with progressive scan, you have to pay more than double.

Do keep in mind the difference in electric, colour, and refresh timing standards between the US and EU though...

Um, don't we use NTSC while you use PAL/SECAM, which are totally incompatible?
Many TV sets in this price/size range have support for multiple standards.

True, but you know Murphy. ;)
Anyway, for this kind of money, I'd forget about TV and get myself a decent LCD/DLP projector. They've dropped hugely in price during the last year.
