IGN Platform Specific GOTY

Is a sequel's story line suppose to be so open and easy to jump in to? I really hope not. Though looking at game story lines it appears that would be the case, no wonder 99% of them are terrible.

The problem with Halo's story is that in the games it's not really told that much... They have created lot's of backstory and events for the storyline, but in the game you only get very brief story parts, also the storyline from 1 through 3 was a bit of a mess and it seems they changed directions few times too often. There should have been only one save the earth trip and the whole Arbiter thing was somewhat confusing too.

Imo
Mass Effect is the game of the year, Bioshock was unlucky to get released the same year that Bioware scifi rpg came out... so it comes to second place. Those two were exceptional games. After that comes the large bunch of good games like Halo 3, Uncharted and so on.

Interesting year indeed. Maybe one of the strongest we've seen in a long time, but I think I said that last year as well. There were a few key game releases this year that I think will have lasting changes on the game industry. The first is Portal showing that non-action plus dark humor creates amazing experience. Then S.T.A.L.K.E.R. showing us that amazing games can come from years of delay, still a game I need to reinstall now that I got a 8800 GTS 512MB. Then The Orange Box showing us that releasing 5 games in one $50 package is no suicide.

There are a few console games I want to play more or simply play. Mass Effect, Super Mario Galaxy, Uncharted, new R&C, and some others I can't think of right now. Overall though a great year, I hope 2008 is as good as you were 2007. :)

Care to expand on this point?

What the hell is, "the land of the real FPS", and what do you mean by, "it hasn't faired well"? Last time I checked the 360 was practically on par with PC for quality of FPS games, so considering Halo 3 has an average of 94 on Metacritic it must be one of the best FPS around on any platform!

Sure. I think the PC is the land of real FPS's, and the best way to play them. Dont agree? Thats fine, its my opinion. On par? Hardly. Not to mention the controls being much better on the PC. And Halo hasnt faired well on the PC. Halo 1&2 havent sold well at all, and didnt get near the praise and high reviews it did on the xbox. Which is what I ment.

I stand by Skyring in this debate, CoD 4's campaign mode is not as fulfilling in comparison to Halo, and would go as far as to say the game is rather bare bones in comparison. Its great fun online for sure, as multiplayer helps alleviate most of the problems I have with the campaign mode, but a fun MP mode does not make up for the gulf of features that separate Halo 3 and CoD 4. Even the most basic online feature (I say basic because after Halo 2 I expected these things to be staples of AAA FPS console games) of a comprehensive stat tracking system is not present in CoD 4. This on top of a lack of CO - OP of any form, and then factor in theater mode, file share and forge. You should be presented with a clear choice for Xbox GOTY, or at least a better FPS than CoD 4.

Of course you stand by his statement. Thats fine and dandy. Its your opinion. That doesnt change the fact, that most people disagree with both of you, and dont think its the best of the year.

Heaven forbid Halo doesnt win everything. Lotta feathers getting ruffled when not everyone bows down to it.

What is this *fact* you speak of . . . that most people think COD4 is better than Halo 3, or that your opinion trumps all others?

Halo 3 has sold 5+ million copies, and routinely has 300000 to 500000 people playing online at any given time. Has COD4 posted better numbers than this?

The first Halo game sold 1+ million copies on the PC, and it still has quite a few servers up and running to this day.

The only Halo game that didn't do well on the PC was a Halo 2. Not surprising given that Halo 2 was easily the weakest game in the trilogy, the graphics were crap, and MS insisted on making it Vista only.

So it seems like your *facts* are a little off, and that your opinion is in the minority. But whatever. Keep on hating.

Where the hell did I say Halo 3 was worthy of winning game of the year? I didn't, I think the Halo games are down right shit and no where near worthy of the praise they've recieved. I'm just annoyed that, fallguy, you keep saying the Halo 3 campaign is bland/tired when CoD4s is the EXACT same way. It's like falling into the trap people always do, you know why we never get truly new games? Because idiots (yes, idiots) think a new skin on the same package makes it different. Case in point: Call of Duty 4. Thankfully its multiplayer actually is truly different.

You dont need to be a halo fan to see that this is a terrible argument, Halo 1 & 2 where both released atleast 2 years after the console versions, and both PC incarnations are essentially just ports.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that a console port, doesn't age well graphically on the pc market. Not only that, but every new good fps game does something that evolves gameplay, gameplay\controls will feel dated aswell.

According to NRP halo 1 sold 1 million on the PC, if thats true, then Halo 1 did amazing (few titles reach 2 million on the PC, less than 40 have..), Halo 2 was vista only also which doesn't help an allready very dated game (think its 3 or 4 years now)

Except not. As I pointed out, many polls have been created, and Halo 3 has not won goty by the general gamers. Nor has it bested COD4 the Gamepro article I quoted. Reading futuremarks forums a thread was created saying COD4 is the best FPS on the 360. And guess what, many (if not all) agree. You find threads like this all over. Same with polls, I have not seen a single poll with Halo 3 being the favorite game, or fps of the 360 this year.

Sure Halo 3 has sold a ton of copies. It sold a ton the first day it came out, from hype. Titanic was also a great blockbuster in terms of cash... think its the best movie? I never said Halo 3 was a bad game. Just that in my opinion, and most out there, its not the best game, or even the best shooter on the 360.

Halo sold "a lot", largely because it was given away with certain hardware, and is still for sale for $20 today. Considering its still on shelves selling today, years later. At Walmart, its right there with the new titles, same with other stores. That doesnt mean its played a lot.

"The only Halo game that didn't do well on the PC was a Halo 2." You mean, the only one besides the first? Yeah, its sales have sucked, and do did reviews.

As I told another poster, if you put your ear to the pulse of the community, you would see that most prefer COD4. Ever since it came out, thats all I hear from my coworkers. How good it is, and how they hardly play Halo 3 anymore. While I play it on a PC, because controls are better, I have to agree. Again, thats not saying that Halo 3 is a bad game, its far from that. Just that its not the best, in most opinions. I may lean towards COD4, being a US Marine (1371) myself. Which is what you get to play as in part of COD4. And the realism of the game, is striking. Its nice, and eerie to play with the weapons you train with, and go to war with, with a lot of the same fire team based tactics. When a grenade hits you, something actually happens. That doesnt change the fact that most prefer COD4 when voting. Such as the source of this topic did.

Maybe that will help you understand better..

Wow, you surf some PC specific forums and find that people there don't think Halo 3 is a great game, that's quite the achievement. I'm sure I could link you plenty of console forums with a differing opinion but I don't really care.

Please just stop trying to tell us what everyone thinks. It's pretty clear what your opinion is, so I think you can just stop altogether.

You dont think this is a PC specific site? Hmm. Here is a tip, lots of people play games on the PC, and consoles. Ots pretty ignorant to think otherwise. Making sweeping generalizations about users on forums, is not a good thing to do. They have a console subforum, as does this one, and many others. Such as HardOCP, anandtech, and many other big name forums, with a lot of traffic thru them.

I never once tried to tell anyone what everyone thinks. Feel free to not put words in my mouth again. I said, "most", and its true. Sorry you dont like the truth, but oh well. Ive supplied magazine quotes, forum polls, and topics to back up what said. Stop acting like Im insulting your child, and realize not everyone thinks its the best game. Halo 3 didnt win goty from IGN, its time for you to get over it. Maybe Halo 3 will actually get good reviws on the PC this time. "In the land of real FPS's", as I said earlier. Im done talking about it.. but Im sure you'll continue to post on.

Eh? The Beyond3D forums are very console specific, at almost any given time all other forums combined equal the same or even less viewers than the console alone.

This site has a very active console community. It's fairly split between PC enthusiasts and console gamers. And this thread is in the console forum.

Well sorry, I guess I should have said stop telling us what most people think. Your (PC centric) forum links are pretty damned far from conclusive evidence that most agree with you.

Had to make one more post, since you cant seem to grasp the simple truth that is in front of you.

You claim my previous links didnt matter, because it was a "PC specific", yet this one is as well. Then you claim validity here, because its in a console forum. Well, the link I left was too. So dont flip-flop when it suits you.

Here is a thread created today, Where COD4 wins easily. Sure its on the futuremark forums, its also in the console subforum. You need to accept the fact that people can play PC games, and console games, and that it doesnt matter where its posted.

Even so, here are two polls from a xbox site. COD4 wins easily still, and then yet again 341 vs 236 in favor of COD4. Pretty large margin of victory.

I came across them in a brief google search, and all results where the same. When a poll was created of the final games, COD4 won. So along with the info from the first post, the quote from Gamepro I gave you, various polls all showing COD4 wins most peoples choice... there is nothing for you to do but accept the fact that most people like COD4 better. I doubt you will, but I am done now. Case closed.

My biggest problem with COD4 winning Xbox360 game of the year is the same reason that I'd have disagreed with the choice for Halo 3 - they're both just ho-hum shooters.

Look at the dynamics between the two, and vehicular combat aside, it just becomes obvious that they're both fairly generic tried and true shooters. It's not that they're bad, they're just not the second coming of Christ that most people perceive them to be. Don't get me wrong, I don't think BIOSHOCK is too far off the mark - despite some creativity with customization, it's still "just a shooter" - but at least it tried somethign new. And no...no one gets to give COD4 credit for it's MP "loot system" - might have well put up a sign saying "MMO FRIENDLY FPS game here...please break from WoW and play me." - garbage

I guess I look at other games on the platform and just see a lot more interesting games that should have won - but may not have due to accessibility issues. Take Mass effect for example, how many people do you know that'll never even give it a chance because it's too heady - these are the same simpletons, by the way, who never watch subtitled movies "cause if I wawnted ta read me something - it'd be a playboy" (cretons).

I'll be honest, I think if I had to vote a GOTY for the Xbox, Mass Effect would be tied dead second with Pac-Man Anniversary (sheer challenge and entertainment value...and isn't that what a game is supposed to be). I'm not so shocked to see IGN being big fat girls about the whole thing though - you notice their platform awards don't intersect (no Bioshock for PC and Xbox) - no no - that might piss off an advertisor, and we wouldn't want that now would we?). Oh well...maybe 2008 will be the year that everyone goes back to playing games rather than reading someone elses opinion about them!

:p

PSP: Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow

Are you >really< kidding me - seriously, this has to be a >real< joke - no one who played this pile of >fluffy pink dancing rabbits< would even bother trading it in, they just burn their copies in hopes no one else catches it (like >the macarena dancing craze<). Seriously, how could you put something like Metal Gear or god..how about the latest 3d Castlevania or Ghost and Gobblins game in the same category as Syphon Filter: The pustulating marketing game!!!???

You're the one not grasping it. Forum polls are hardly accurate reflections of the general population. Right now I'd bet cod4 is cashing in on 'newer' more than anything in terms of popularity. Initially a lot of people loved GeoW(online multiplayer), once they figured out the problems, not so much.

CoD4 vs Halo3 on 360

I guess what's more important for GOTY, more people voting/playing it? Or more originality but not necessary more people playing it. Or is it something else...

In term of vote/popular, what's hot on LIVE now? What's dominating LIVE? Is it CoD4 or Halo3? (That was a rhetorical question)...So you don't need to go off some web site poll. Just look at the sear number of people playing Halo3.

In term of originality, neither Halo3 nor CoD4 are very original. Though Halo3 get a nod for Forge. It's combining god game with FPS. CoD4 did an outstanding job with RPG elements in their multiplayer, but we already had a class system in other FPS games. So it's more evolutionary...

In term of completeness and well execution, Halo3 no doubt takes that cake. AI on Halo3 is much better than CoD4. From split screen play to co-op, Halo3 seems more complete. The only thing I find Halo3 missing is bots.

So which is more deserving of GOTY? Mass Effect! :p

Exactly my thought as well. I do think Halo3 is a better overall package than CoD4, but neither deserve to be GotY compared to Mass Effect.

I kinda question the choice of BioShock for PC GotY as well, I'm thinking CoD4 might be a better choice for that platform.
