hypothetical question!?!#@

Suppose humans were immortal, indestructible, and their enviroment was equally tough!!!! Now, suppose that if they were to fall into some nasty situation(black hole, star, volcano, etc.), they could teleport after a while.

Now the question is... do you think society, in such a scenario, would allow for perpetual torture of criminals as punishment for serious crimes?

Comments greatly appreciated!!!

Ps assume the enviroment has infinite resources, infinite space, and no there are no long distance travel or comm. problems.

why doesnt it make sense. If you believe in it, then it makes perfect sense.

The fact that an omnipotent/omniscient/omnipresent supposedly loving and kind being would create a torturous never-ending prison for those it knows will end up there anyways is anathema to common sense and decency. If the creator of hell were truly loving and kind, it would have only created the ones it knows will not end up in that prison and leave it at that.

Frankly I just think god was bored and wanted to have a little fun at our expense. ;)

You cannot reconcile the concept of an eternal hell with the concept of a true loving god. To be honest I only bothered with this idea and figured it out for myself when I was 18. Most people figure it out much earlier...

If you believe in hell, because its part of your religion. Then it makes perfect sense. That is where faith in your religion comes in. Faith. Its hard to prove but you believe in it any ways.

While I know what your saying I find your way of saying it contradictory. "fact" and "supposedly" are not congruent, and the big "If" is an assumption used to support your conclusion. Why don't you just say that God is a not perfect, that God is a jealous God, and one better behave or risk going to hell.

Ah, the old Roman pantheons were so much more straight forward than this monotheism.

How could an all powerful, loving God do such horrible things? Its a mystery. Shut up and eat your cracker!

What about the idea that hell is our own creation. I.e. god gives us imortality and wisdom, so we can see our own shortcomings and this is what hell is, a device of our making not his?

Anyone that says facts in the same sentence as religious beliefs is confused.

I like the Omega Theory's version/explanation of hell. Not that I believe it to be in any way likely to be real, but I do like the explanation. ;)

Pfft. I wrote that after 11hours of hacking away in mod_perl last night for a project. My eyes were bleeding. Sue me. :p

Because when scientists(read smart people) use it then its ok. Lets state some facts that were eventually proven wrong.

=Sun revolved around the earth--Fact for hundreds if not thousands of years. Reality:fiction
=Atom smallest particle of matter--Fact for decades. Reality:fiction
=No human can travel faster than [insert moving object]. Fact for its time period (ie locomotive in the 1800's,...). Reality:Currently weve reached a ceiling, but im sure we will break it soon enough.
You see my point. The word fact is misused all the time. I believe it was pascal who said something like its safer/better to wager on believing in god than in not believing in god. Ill look for a link after i go to sleep.

I believe that if there is a god . ITs a she. And being like all women they love to screw with peoples minds and are bitter and jealous. That is why there is a hell. For the female god to get her kicks off  (j/p)

If we were created its most likely that whatever made us is what we will evolve into. Thus our creator is not perfect and can be both loving and hatefull at the same time. Much like us. After all we were created in his image. Most likely through genetics and cloning. We were then set up here as an experiment. Mabye a way to see into thier own past and figure out how they became what they are. And now we have developed enough that we will follow the same steps to figure out how we were made and thus it starts all over again .

Why not just come out and say does HELL make sense? It doesnt...

heheh, I like it better this way, giving society such a role is more entertaining, and I think it helps get the point across to those that still "wanna believe".

Zid there is no point, no logical explanation can account for anything.

Where did the big bang come from? Where did that come from
Where did god come from?

There is no logical answer except that you are a figment of my imagination. ..

Yes logical... illogical... explanations, are like the two sides of a coin... chaos...order... existence... nothingness...

There is no logical answer except that you are a figment of my imagination. ..

What if? What if "What if" was not a hypothetical question?

"I wnt t knw God's thghts"-einstein.... hmmm...

You cannot reconcile the concept of an eternal hell with the concept of a true loving god.

It goes something like this, if you rejected the true loving God, you become seperated from him. That state and place of eternal seperation is eternal hell.
