Huge demand for ATI products

Evidently Sapphire saw their single strongest month ever in October for the European region, selling about 50% more units than their previous best month. They weren't sure how November was panning out though.

50% is substaintial. More of the same for november is likely. You don't get an increase like that for no reason. A 50% increase is noteworthy.

I am very surpised with sapphire results in October as the 9600 xt was not available for most of that month. How did they get that increase ?

Anyone think this has to do with people upgrading for *cough* HL2, the game that is not to be released... If so it is fairly humorous.

I heard a ton of buzz about people saying oh I am updating for halflife 2...

ALDI (German supermarket chain) is going to start selling this "Medion" system tomorrow:

Intel Pentium 4 3,0 GHz Hyperthreading 800 Mhz Front Side Bus
ATI Radeon 9800XL 128MB DDR SDRAM 256 Bit Memory Interface (MSI?)
Pioneer MULTI-Standard DVD/CD-Brenner 4x DVD-R/RW DVD+R/RW16xCD/R
Sony DVD-ROM 16x
Seagate 160GB Festplatte Ultra ATA 100 7200U/min
512 MB DDR-RAM 400Mhz 64 Bit Dual-Channel Memory
Medion Stereo-TV, FM-Tunerkarte
Midi-Tower ausgezeichnet mit Reddot Design Award Winner 2003
7xUSB 2.0 (3xFront, 4xBack)
Firewire IEEE1394 1xFront, 1xBack
Dolby Digital 6 Kanal Audio
Ethernet 10/100 + WLAN 54Mbit/s IEEE 802.11g
Medion 56K V9.X PCI Modem

(sorry, didn't translate the bits)
Presumably several 100k units have been made. MSI supplied graphics the last time around, as indicated above, but you never know ... :p

Should be more. The news early september was that medion ordered 500 K R350. They alredy sold 300 k R300 based PC last spring.

Btx last spring all the PC were sold in less than 3 days due to a very competitive price, and in my area were only a few were allocated ( south of france) none were left by the end of the first day :)

I have been wondering the last few days about what is behind the 9800 XL. Anyone knows?
IIRC, it's a MSI-build, dual VGA (aka no DVI) card using a R350 chip with all 8 pipes enabled and a 128 MB, 256-bit memory interface running at 350/310 MHz.

I think it's people mistaking that for the XT, offhand. Maybe it was the first way the R360 was described, or named in certain markets? <shrugs> Offhand most of the examples I can see use "XL" in place of what would likely be referring to XT's. Perhaps used because of ATi's old "Rage XL" and "XPERT XL" products, while the XT label hadn't been used before.

Has an announcement been made that mentions MSI as the manufacturer?
This is where I was going ... if it's not MSI, it could be Sapphire. IMO that would easily explain the strong European sales ;)

According to Xbit the cards are made by MSI, quantity = 500 thousand. Add this to Sapphire’s numbers and it is no wonder ATI upped their forecast. I wonder if they are going to run into supply problems though.

Price 1180 euros including vat, not surprise why they sell their PC so fast with that special offer.

pcwelt now has a test of this graphic card http://www.pcwelt.de/ratgeber/hardware/35720/ - interestingly, it doesn't use the external power connector (the card has the connector, but it's not used in this pc). In the article, "powered AGP slot" is mentioned, but I have no idea what could be different with that AGP slot (the review pc had trouble with other graphic cards, but according to the forum it's a glitch in the test system). Maybe they just made sure the board can supply more current than required by the AGP spec.

The 9800xl has 350 / 310 MHz core/ram; so it's an middle thing in between an old R9700Pro and an R9800Pro. So nothing special except for the fact that this is an rather highend card for an supermarket pc at least in germany where most pc's have only an FX5200 or an FX5600.
