How Will Using Blu-Ray Affect The Cost Of Games?

Now that the PS3 is using Blu-Ray will games be more expensive? I don't recall Sony ever releasing the cost of PS3 games.

Yeah I expect the same, 70 dollar games would hurt sony a great amount, not to mention the hard working devs.

Considering 360 games went up in price in a MAJOR way despite using Real Cheap Ass Media, I don't see why BR games couldn't sell for the same price. Especially as BR prices won't stay high forever, and the day games migrate onto 2 or maybe more DVDs, then media cost will easily reach or exceed the level of BR anyway.

Yeah. I was just wondering because I heard people say they will be $70-$80 becaus Blu-Ray and HD-DVD movies are at least $10-$15 more than DVD movies.

They're expensive for the same reason the price of games went up. Creating loads of content is expensive. It's not the medium so much as creating the stuff to fill that medium.

While in a game, you're not really trying to *fill* the disc, but Bluray will only be valuable after content size grows beyond DVD limits. And that's a hell of a lot of content.

Bear in mind that for 10 GB of content used in the game, there was probably a good 50 GB of total content production, much of which got thrown out or replaced.

If games sell for the same price as 360 games, seems to me that there would be more profit to be had on the 360.

Are all PS3 games going to be on Blu-Ray? Or will some be on DVD like some early PS2 games being on CD?

But games on the 360 only go up to 7.4 GBs. :-|

I'm pretty sure Sony said all ps3 games will come out on blu-ray. But they might be just talking about 1st party games, not 100% sure. BUT there are some devs praising blu-ray so I wouldnt be surprised if all games show up on the new media.

The price of a BluRay disc may be considerably higher initially than that of a DVD, but in the end you're talking a few bucks at most even at the beginning, and mere cents in the end. So the price of the disc just isn't a really big factor here.

BluRay discs are a required medium - all PS3 games will always be on BluRay discs.

If they continue to have 40% yields for a while, then you might see it reflected in higher prices. If they resolve the yeild issues then I expect them to be at $59.99.

That's not true. They already sell $20 Blu-Ray movies. $60 would make the medium cost even less of a concern. All this FUD is dumb.

And BRD will include all this content as 'cutscenes' and 'gallery' bonus content...

"Here's all the stuff we removed from the game because it was rubbish. And because it's rubbish, why would you want to view it? Beats us but it's what's done on DVDs so it must be good." ;)
