Horizon Forbidden West [PS, PC]

I wouldn't be surprised if the PS4 and PS4 Pro's versions are simply using the Zero Dawn engine, and the PS5 version is using a very different engine.

According to all the statements about pumping up their 1st-party dev houses, Sony seems to have given Guerrilla the manpower to make 2 games in parallel that are very different in everything but storyline and pre-baked assets.

If Insomniac could release Miles Morales PS5 + Miles Morales PS4 + Spiderman Remastered P5 + Ratchet&Clank in the timespan of 8 months (and all this only 2 years after Spiderman 2018), then Guerrilla could be delivering significantly different experiences between the PS4+Pro and PS5 versions.
that for sure would be suprise for me, very pleasant !

The PC / PS4 versions of Decima can't stream assets per-frame, at least not anywhere near what's possible on the PS5 which is what has allowed the latter to show graphics like we saw in Demon's Souls Remake and Ratchet&Clank Rift Apart.

I'd have a hard time believing Guerrilla is treating the PS5 version like a faster PS4 Pro with twice the RAM. They're more ambitious than that.
If they were going to do that, I think Forbidden West would have been a launch title.
imho it will be like miles morales ps5 vs pro but we will see

But even R&C is based on the same Insomniac engine that was used for Miles, even on PS4. I’m sure there are systems in place that take advantage of the PS5, while not having to reinvent the wheel for the Potato versions.
Just like UE5 will run on PS4, while having additional tools that can only be used on next gen (new gen? What do we call it now?).

It was just debug view which did normal frustum culling.

Pretty sure they streamed more generally by location instead of fov.

The streaming was done by location and it was easy to see because during some combat there are some destruction like tree and when the player go out of the location and come back immediatly they disseapear.

I'll be interested to see how far they push the boat out on PS5. Their landscape /flora tools were already heavily procedural in HZD. It not hard to imaging base layout for an area being the same between generations, with PS5 being able to leveraging a wider pool of assets to layer on top.

That's somewhat boring from a new gameplay point of view though.

I'm just happy if first year of ps5 really sees horizon forbidden west release. Sony has been doing good job on launch year titles. Especially considering sony still supports also ps4 making development more complicated.

This title will perhaps finally show next generation graphics on consoles.

I doubt that is the case as this game still ships also on ps4. We will have to wait later in the generation to really see what development teams and hw is capable of. But that's not anything new. First year console games rarely push hw as hard as late generation titles will. There is plenty developers need to figure out to do proper pushing of hw.

edit. I'm not saying forbidden west will be ugly. Just that if there is a ps5+ps5 pro only horizon coming out in 3-4years it will be much more impressive than forbidden west. Though what is impressive depends on the viewer, we could also be hitting diminishing gains where some people see the difference clearly and some don't.

What makes Horizon an interestingly fun game is that gameplay wise, it feels more like a hunting game and less like an assassination game.

It’s a bit of a monster hunter meets assassins creed type game. In the end I was pretty satisfied with this combination, so I’m looking forward to a sequel.

the only drawback for the game was the amount of additional game padding in it. I haven’t played a game where that padding helped make it better. Most of the time I just skip most of the content now and only when I absolutely have something I want, will I side step to do it.

Curious to see how they will innovate the sequel here, I suspect they must have left some things on the cutting board that were great ideas but couldn’t make it at the time.

to be honest I can't understand dispariy between horizon reviews and days gone couse for me days gone is better game with much better npc's that you can connect with in some way, unique hordes etc., maybe one of reason I don't like generaly fighting with robots in games

Personal tastes! To me, Horizon is by far a superior game under all points of view.

I like both games for different reasons. I actually finished Horizon Zero Dawn but couldn't slog through the 158 main missions of Days Gone. Those are just main missions, not side quests. To be clear, Witcher 3's main quest line is 57 quests long. :runaway:

Once I'd got the point where I knew what caused the outbreak in Days Gone, that was more than enough. I played on to meet the mad colonel but I'd had my fill. The plot line in HZD really kept me hooked all the way to the end, though.

Yep. Story wise there is no comparison. DG really had 158 missions? Wow. I got the platinum on that one and I can’t even remember.
