Halo: Reach

So is MC going to make an appearance?
Looks great and nice let's go kick some ass attitude :) even if it ends badly...

According the the novel "The Fall of Reach", I believe the MC was planetside during at least some of the battle. So it's possible he could make an appearance.

The quality off the lghting effects and shadows look like something that is probably considered impossible on current console hardware

Nonsense. Several upcoming titles accounting for multiple platforms do more to showcase the 360 than this reveal with actual gameplay footage. This render is not nearly as impressive as you suggest compared to other touch ups like it and what it likely looks like during gameplay even less....

If this scene looks impossible on current console hardware, then God of War 3 should give some serious cause for concern come January.

i see people talking about the main character not having hair once again....:???:

i think people should know the reason why.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRMUYpH7bQk

when you join the army it's not really sugar and rainbows sort of speak. your hair gets shaved off as means of showing discipline...........and convicts go through the same thing too.

so, seeing a long haired badass with a bandanna, or a spiky mohawk person is not being really realistic.

....and also i think that many shouldn't expect for the women to look so hot too, most military gals aren't so pretty looking anyway.

i also want to say that i agree with Laa-Yosh about the graphics, yes they are being pushed.

"This is crazy, everyone criticized Bungie for not pushing the hardware enough - and now that they're doing it, the same people are saying it's a trick?"

what most also need to understand is that every games uses tricks, to make a cinematic experience, even killzone2. (which Laa-Yosh already explained info of polygons for KZ2's character models in this thread)

quiet frankly there's only a hand full of console FPS's that isn't using a monochromatic color pallet system (or some sort of color lends filter), this game is one of them.

i liked the blends of colors, and also the clouds and the sky Reach has, it looked pretty realistic.

No, he wasn't on the planet.

Dang it! Now I have to go and re-read the novel.

If they are infact Spartan IIIs, then they could possibly be weaker than Spartan IIs. In Ghosts of Onyx, I seem to recall that the Spartan III program was sort of hastily put together so they had to take some shortcuts with genetic engineering and such, and their armor isn't as advanced as the Spartan II armor.

I'm not sure of the dates of the Reach battle and the Spartan III program either. I don't remember any mention of Spartan IIIs in The Fall of Reach, but it's not like Bungie follows its cannon that closely.

More "bleak and violent" can be a good thing, I guess. As a diehard Halo fan, I'm not opposed to a grittier, more violent theme. It is rated M after all.

Do people still get shaved bald these days beyond the initial training period ? I went through that phase too. :) They let our hair grow back (still short) after training though.
Yes, convicts' shaving is even shorter. Once at war, I don't think the Army will enforce the look consistently. We see real life photos of soldiers with heavy beard and messy hair.

As for beautiful women in the army, well... Laa Yosh was commenting about scary/ugly Evelyn in KZ2. I don't think the comment was/is off.

Yo... you guys are stereo-typing. Come on. I expect it from civies, but even people with prior service?

Maybe it's just me... but even as a combat arms enlisted active duty soldier, I met and worked with gorgeous women who were beautiful both physically and intellectually. Sure, many are from less privileged backgrounds, and perhaps aren't your typical beauty queens / "girly girls" -- but don't get my wrong, they haven't lost a single bit of femininity.

Perhaps it's the uniform. The US Army BDU's of my time were not particularly attractive on even the most beautiful of figures. Even with a utility/pistol belt to cinch up the bagginess.

Anyway, this is most definitely a tangent... but... on the hairstyles:

In an "other than line unit" environment where personal grooming standards are more relaxed; sure, we gave that cut many derogative terms with 'cruit-cut (recruit cut) being the most family friendly. Nevertheless, before formals/semi-formals/events involving women friends/spouses, or even the promotion boards, we all went out to the barber and got a "high speed, low drag, high & tight."

A still pic doesnt say as much as actual moving footage. And what I saw in this trailer impresses me more than anything else released or unreleased that was shown on the 360 and probably on the PS3. Assuming that this quality will exist and be consistent throughout the gameplay sections of course.

I didn't stereotype though. I just didn't want to go totally off topic. I was simply commenting that they shouldn't match KZ2's Evelyn, the female character model can be prettier.

If you're lucky, you can find pretty women in the military; especially in some military art schools (or music, drama divisions).

Hopefully that will help you clear some things up.

Now, I can't tell if you're being cheeky/sarcastic...

I knew a beautiful, wickedly smart Airborne rigger woman, who jumped out of airplanes with chutes she packed herself... first met her when we were both PFCs entering US Army Airborne school.

I knew another accomplished woman medic who probably could have been an MD if she had the means to attend university / med-school.

A quick google search would reveal stories of valor and pictures of attractive, in-the-line-of-fire, as combat arms as they get women soldiers:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23547346/

Sorry, this bothers me as I used to hold the same attitude, coming from a combat arms background in a line unit and transitioning to a co-ed reserves, non-combat arms role. I initially turned my nose up at some of the women I worked with and tsk-tsk'd my fellow soldiers at their indiscretions that can happen between men and women. I quickly over-came that -- heck, I was friends with a female parachute rigger who was getting danger pay (well, airborne supplement)!

It's easy to fall into that. Anyway, women -- even pretty little things, are dying and getting grievous injuries out in the field / in-country.

A friend in the UK was telling me of a deceased classmate/fellow soldier: very talented, beautiful, young intel soldier who perished in Afghanistan:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/jun/19/afghanistan.military

RIP to the men & women who lost their lives defending others & my utmost sympathy and respect to their loved ones and those who volunteer to serve the greater good.

Anyway, sorry to derail this thread.

That's like taking the least impressive screen cap you could find and comparing it to another game in order to specifically make it look bad.

Besides which, it'd be nice if this didn't turn into a versus thread. The graphics either stand up on their own (according to it's art direction and requirements) or it doesn't.

i don't know, the subject is a bit off topic, that would be under "military hygiene" or something like that. http://www.uwgb.edu/dutchs/WestTechPPT/Miltary Values.ppt
http://puterismusings.com/weblog/2008/03/02/military-hair-cut/

maybe you can grow some facial hair (or maybe each country has it's own set of rules and hair standards) but i think letting your self go all natural destroys that particular message that the military wants it's solders to be. (as a single unit in full uniform or gear and whatnot)

but as for Halo Reach's circumstance i don't think it would make sense to make of Vid of the ODST solders going through hell in a training exercise and then show very laid back solders.

Why do they have to show the characters as "laid back" ? Who said anything about laid back anyway ?

Does "military hygiene" mean "bald" to you ?

It was a simple observation. Reach is hardly the only game doing it. Don't make it sound so big. :)

Long (anything from a handful on up) has traditionally been a serious drawback for a military combatant. Giving someone something as easy to grab onto and control as long hair is going to lose you a lot of fights if you get into hand-to-hand fighting.

Added to that the obvious hygiene issues. The low maintanence aspect is also a consideration for keeping up appearances in the field.

And are we really arguing about bald vs. not just because One guy had stubble on his head? :)

I'm not sure I like the "grittier" Halo visuals. I kinda like it being half-realistic/half-cartoony. I also hope they don't lose the comic relief aspects of the series.

But at least I guess I can be thankful they didn't make it cell-shaded. /shudder...

??? Does "not bald" mean "long" automatically ? You can grab beard too you know. Like I said, the original comment was a just simple observation.

1 guy had stubble on his head. So now we're assuming bald is going to be the predominant theme for this game and noone is going to have short hair other than the women? :p
